Our flight home was pretty much a copy of our flight out. While the Air Canada medium haul service is never super exciting, it is usually quite consistent and predictable. We were fortunate to have an economy class fare that was upgraded into Business Class with upgrade credits to land ourselves into Business Class.

Review: Air Canada Business Class E190, Winnipeg – Vancouver

“Our Air Canada Business Class Embraer 190 flight home offered a comfortable but not memorable trip home

Like on our outbound, our round trip flights were purchased in an economy class “Flex” Fare and upgraded using E-Upgrades earned through the Air Canada Aeroplan program. The upgrades were cleared and confirmed in advance at the 10 day window thanks to the Air Canada Top Tier summer promotion, which allowed for a more immediate upgrade than the usual 4 day window.

Gate 11 – Winnipeg Airport

We left the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Winnipeg International Airport and headed on the short walk to the gate.

The flight today was completely full today and the gate agents were offering three $400 compensation vouchers for a bump to the 9 PM flight; which was 7 hours later. Usually I jump at these opportunities but after a full weekend of socializing and visiting, we were both pretty tired. We’d also returned the rental car and didn’t want to forgo our confirmed business class upgrades so we passed on taking the later flight.

Boarding was announced with approximately 40 elites and business class passengers shuffling on board through the priority lane. It was a large number considering the plane only holds 73 passengers.

On board Air Canada Embraer Business Class:

We settled into the familiar seat. We were in row 2 this time, which was much tighter than the bulkhead. It was perfectly okay for a 2 hour flight, but perhaps not much longer in my humble opinion. A combination of old and new pictures.

On board, we settled into the Embraer 190 Air Canada Business Class Product. We were in the bulkhead today, seats 1D/1F.  There are three rows of Business Class in the Embraer 190, in a 1-2 configuration up front, and a 2-2 configuration in the back in economy class.

The In Flight Entertainment Service:

The Air Canada Embraer 190 has built in video monitors with entertainment in the back of every seat in business class and economy class seats. While it is complimentary, it doesn’t have that many movies and you’d get through it in just two or three flights.

A Pre-Departure Beverage:

The usual Air Canada Pre Departure Beverage of water and orange juice in the plastic cup was offered.

Paper Menus were distributed while waiting on the ground at Winnipeg.

Meal orders were again taken by status, as it was on the flight out.

We were underway pretty quickly for a “heavy” flight. As we got underway, we had some great flat prairie views on the climb to altitude. The landscape of the Canadian Prairies is much flatter than the regular Pacific Northwest Mountains that make up home. A beautiful green view on the climb out today.

A pre-supper beverage and almond service was offered. I had an engaging conversation with the flight attendant on the flight.

Q: What kind of wines do you have?
A: Red and White

I think I’ll stick with Gin and Tonic(s) today… It was served with mixed nuts in a small ramekin.

The Meal Service: A Late Lunch

Our flight was departing through the afternoon, leaving at 2 PM and arriving at 3:30 PM Vancouver Time. Thankfully, it was not a main eating hour so many people opted not to eat. This translated into a larger choice of meals than what is usually offered when the pantry goes empty. I went with the salmon titled as Pan Fried Atlantic Salmon with ginger flavoured Thai Fish Sauce and seasonal rice and mixed vegetables. It was pretty overcooked, verging on dry, but still edible.

Evening Snack: Presented on a Tray all at once

Throughout dinner, a regular and continuous top up of wines were offered.

I settled into the movie “The Other Woman” with Cameron Diaz. It was pretty entertaining.

As always a nice ride into Vancouver with many mountains to daze the day away at for the last hour of the flight.

Rocky Mountain Views

We had a straight in descent into Vancouver International Airport towards Gate 43

For once, the bags were out on the arrivals belt prior to our arrival. MsWT73 pronouncing “Finally – this is what priority bags are supposed to be like”. Well, don’t get too excited there. It’s a rarity in my experience, especially on those connecting flights.

The Bottom Line: Our Experience on Air Canada Embraer Medium Haul Business Class

The Air Canada business class experience offers a more “comfortable” experience than riding in the back. It doesn’t really compare to any foreign carriers and doesn’t seem to aspire to do so. Rather, it seems to be targeting the US carriers by offering a better lounge, food and “on board” experience.

I hope you all enjoyed the report to small town Ontario. Thanks for following along. Happy contrails!

If you’ve flown Air Canada Business Class Domestically in Canada, what do you think about the experience?

The Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport has undergone a transformation and is now a modern facility with a comfortable concourse and more modern lounges is a world class gateway that offers flights to many destinations around North America and occasionally Mexico and the Caribbean. While it’s mostly a departure airport, I have occasionally connected through here on flights back home from Eastern Canada when the direct flight isn’t always available.

Review: Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge, Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

This review is of the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. There is also a Plaza Premium Lounge at Winnipeg International Airport.

Getting to the Winnipeg International Airport:

After a fun wedding, it was time to head back home. A quick 2.5 hour drive back the way we came, and we were back at the Winnipeg Airport.

The Winnipeg Airport is called the “John Richardson International Airport. John Richardson was the founder of Canadian Airlines international and a pioneer of aviation in Canada.

The Drop off for all carriers; including Bearskin

Checking Into Air Canada Business Class:

The new Winnipeg airport is a bright and airy hall with lots of space. It’s always great to fly through a modern facility and this place is no exception. It’s been pretty much deserted every time I’ve flown through here, a stark contrast to the over stuffed old terminal which has now been demolished.

Winnipeg John Richardson Departures Hall
US Departures Area – Winnipeg International Airport

In the departures hall, you can even stand in the shadow of James Armstrong Richardson who has graced the hall in a Monopoly Style “rich man” jacket.

Air Canada’s check in today was handled at a podium check in with bags wheeled over to a conveyor belt immediately behind.

A global first for me; security screening today courtesy of a CATSA representative that had blue dyed hair.

Locating the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Winnipeg Domestic:

We headed for the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge opposite Gate 9 in the Domestic Hall. There is no lounge on the US Transborder “Pre Clearance Area side”. With a simple layout, it’s really easy to find. After clearing security, turn left and you just have to keep walking down the concourse until you come to it.

There was plenty of seating in the departure concourse for the narrow body planes that usually serve Winnipeg. There were also great daylight views for the airport with tall windows that were floor to ceiling.

Domestic Departures Concourse – YWG

The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge is located almost near Gate 9 in the Domestic Concourse. There aren’t that many gates here so it’s not all to hard to find.

Accessing the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge:

The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge was accessed today courtesy of our business class ticket for our Air Canada Winnipeg – Vancouver business class flight. Unlike in the United States, Air Canada allows for lounge access when flying in domestic or trans-border first class.

You could also get access into the lounge through a business class ticket on Air Canada under the Star Alliance Lounge policy, by purchasing an annual lounge membership, or through select Canadian based credit card memberships.

The lounge itself is located on the same level as the departures concourse so there is no elevator to ride in order to gain access to the lounge.

Inside the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge:

The compact, but comfortable Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge offered capacity for 80 persons, a general seating area, computers, TV area, tables and chairs and a few loungers.

Unfortunately, with the lounge being on the same level as the concourse, the lounge offers views towards the street side or the lessor used side of the airline apron. This makes the views a lot less interesting looking at plain tarmac.

Maple Leaf Lounge Chairs

We were able to locate some semi private chairs right at the rear of the lounge that were partitioned off from the rest of the lounge space. These chairs were facing the apron, and had convenient and comfortable footstools.

The lounge also offered a small television media area that was occupied on our visit.

Food and Beverage:

The Maple Leaf Lounge offered a full light lunch today consisting of turkey and vegetarian sandwiches, two salads (pasta and couscous) along with two soups. It was a perfectly acceptable alternative to the TGIF Friday restaurant in the secure side of the domestic concourse.

Lunch was paired with some complimentary self pour wines. Today’s offerings were Wolf’s Blass Chardonnay or Sumac Ridge Gewürztraminer in the whites, along with Eagle hawk Cabernet Sauvingon and Graffinga Malbec on the reds. A decent amount of second label liquors were also on offer.

We had a good snack here before getting on board the 2.5 hour flight home. It’s always a great thing when you can actually leave a lounge feeling fuller than when you arrived and this was no exception.

Lunch: Soup and a Sandwich

A Lounge with a View:

There were nice views over the tarmac to the Four Points Sheraton Winnipeg Airport where we started earlier. The old terminal foodprint is still excavated by the air bridge stairs and the decommissioned overpass on the right hand side of the photograph.

The Views towards the Four Points by Sheraton

My Thoughts on the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Winnipeg Domestic:

Overall, the Air Canada Maple Leaf lounges haven’t suffered the death of cuts that the rest of the Air Canada Top Tier experience has suffered. It’s by no means the best lounge experience out there, but in comparison to some of the US lounge offerings, it’s a reasonable and pleasant experience.

If you’ve been through the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge in Winnipeg, was your experience as filling as ours?

We don’t often make a point of staying in Best Western hotels, but sometimes you’d don’t have a choice in the matter. In this case, the Best Western was the option over a Super 8 or a Travelodge so it was the choice by default. We weren’t expecting a whole lot, but came away with a comfortable stay after three days.

Hotel Review: The Best Western Lakeside Inn and Conference Center, Kenora, Ontario, Canada.

Booking and Getting there:

There is only one choice for “hotel” accommodation in Kenora: The Best Western. There are the usual suspects in the motel style: Super 8’s, Days Inn, Travelodge’s and Comfort Inns. Meh – I think we will take the Best Western. A quick Rocketmiles online travel agency booking, stacked with a 1,000 mile Father’s Day promotion and we were 4,000 Aeroplan miles richer after a three night stay.

The Best Western hotel was previously a Holiday Inn. It has since been reflagged as the Clarion Lakeside Inn and Conference Center. The accommodations were in a seventies styled tower. The hotel is right on the water and the majority of the rooms have some form of a lake view.

The Best Western Lakeside Inn
A Circular Design

The hotel, along with many other businesses in the area, offered a boat slip for visiting boats. It’s not often outside the Maldives you get to stay at a hotel with an attached boat jetty. I never thought I’d be comparing a Best Western to a hotel in the Maldives but stranger things have happened.

The Hotel has immediate boat access

Arriving to The Best Western:

The lobby was showing a bit of wear and tear as the hotel had several phases of a soft update program that didn’t really match together, or hadn’t been fully finished.

A friendly check in was offered with a line for “members of our Matterhorn program.” (not really).

The Room: A King, Executive Floor

Through some stroke of luck, we ended up on the Executive Floor. It was a bit of a scary looking décor in the hallway with the bright orange primary colors, but thankfully we were assigned a fully refurbished and refreshed room. It seems that most of the King Bed rooms, at the time of our visit, were upgraded.

The room itself was nicely appointed. The color scheme was subtle browns with fine patterns on the bed spreads and carpets coverings.

There was an attached microwave available for us, in addition to a newer television.

With big bonus points for the Best Western hotel chain from MrsWT73 for this feature – a sanitized TV remote control:

The room also featured the usual serviceable washrooms. The washroom had also been refreshed.

Room with a View:

We ended up with a room with a land facing view. We had an upgrade to the Executive Floor and a room with a water view wasn’t what we had paid for. The hotel is circular so there are a good number of rooms with partial ocean views so you might get lucky with your room assignment. We had a partial lake view available if we turned our head the right way.

For those that are interested, the hotel floor plan. The hotel is completely round, making for upgrade opportunities limited to lake view or no lake view.

Food and Beverage:

The property also had a roof top restaurant with fabulous views. We took breakfast up here on a few occasions.

hese were the types of places you were taken when you were young for a “special” dinner. My childhood was filled with running around exploring a “fancy” hotel like these (when your parents weren’t looking) and being able to reminisce about these experiences was a neat opportunity The experience brought back lots of memories of those times, even if they weren’t at this particular property.

My Thoughts on our stay at The Best Western Lakeside Inn:

It was a pretty unique experience to stay in an older property. While admittedly, there isn’t a lot to choose from in Kenora, Ontario, it was pretty hard to beat the Best Western. It didn’t offer the most exciting stay experience, and was pretty rudimentary in it’s offerings, it was a comfortable stay that was reasonably priced, close to everything in town, and had a pretty welcoming roof top restaurant that offered a pleasant breakfast and dining experience.

Editors Note:

This property is now operating as The Clarion Lakeside Inn and Conference Center.

As a result of terrific geography, Canada is full of parks, waterways and small towns between it’s three coast lines. While some may be more engaging and entertaining than others, Kenora, Ontario has a reputation of being a boaters paradise. Situated near the border of the Province of Manitoba and the Province of Ontario, it’s remote by Ontario standards but located on the Trans Canada Highway, a short drive from Winnipeg.

City By The Water: Kenora, Ontario, Canada

Getting to Kenora, Ontario:

The next day, we picked up our Avis Car Rental at the airport. There was a small wait of 15 minutes today thanks to only one counter attendant working. After declining the double upsell to the Dodge Challenger, and then the single upsell to the Dodge Charger, we had the keys to a new Hyundai Elantra “mid size” in hand.

We headed off down the Trans Canada through some exceptionally flat countryside for the 2.5 hour drive to Kenora, Ontario. As many Canadians will know, there is a certain rite of passage to drive across Canada. It’s something that’s usually only done once- most make the return trip through the northern United States since the price of gas is so much cheaper. Part of this trek is through some really flat terrain. Fortunately, the drive from Winnipeg to Kenora has some of the more interesting“flat” terrain.

Pictures taken courtesy of MrsWT73 at 120km/h. Some beautiful road trip skylines as we headed eastward.

The scenery gets a bit more treed as we made our way to the Ontario border, and the home of Lake of the Woods, Ontario.

This is the crossing of the provincial border (state line) and the arrival into Kenora, Ontario.

Before we knew it, we were pulling into town.

About Kenora, Ontario:

Kenora is a unique place to visit. The lake is “North America’s Premium Boating destination” and surrounds 14,522 islands. Most of the town is surrounded around the lake and it’s features. Many of the islands are Crown land, although I did see Sotheby’s Real Estate marketing a few private islands for around $2.5 million. In some ways, it reminded me of a forested version of the Maldives without the sandy beaches. Here’s a blow up photograph from the map of the Best Western. Kenora is located in the top center of the map.

Any old school map wouldn’t be the same without the newer school digital version. It really highlights the amount of water around the town and the places you could access with a boat.

According to the visitor guide, Kenora was first inhabited back in 1880 as a town called Rat Portage. The town played a role in the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railing by providing railway ties for the tracks across the prairies.

Walking Around Kenora, Ontario:

The town of Kenora is an easy one to walk around in and made for some great photographic opportunities with its historic buildings. Some of the buildings have been nicely restored. Others have been blessed as buildings that people have simply forgotten about.

There’s water all throughout the town:

Being the gateway to the islands, much of the town is on the water.

Even the Safeway grocery store offers tie ups for boats and docking for supplies.

There is also a large aviation component to getting around the islands. Charters were available for tours. We didn’t have the time to do one, but it would likely be a very pretty tour if the weather had good visibility.

Local Float Planes

I’m informed that the “Chip Truck” is locally famous. It comprises of 4 locations around the Kenora area and is famous for fresh cut French fries. According to the sign, it’s been in operation since 1957. “World Famous” claims were not verified by the writer.

The Town is Surrounded by Peaceful Lakes:

Kenora is a town that is surrounded by wilderness. It’s not usual to see animals roaming freely around town.

In addition to the wilderness, there’s some terrific beauty amongst the lakes in the area. You’d probably want to own a boat of some sort if you lived here.

A Peaceful Setting for a Holiday

My thoughts on our Visit to Kenora, Ontario, Canada:

All in all, we had a peaceful stay in Kenora. Despite it’s remote location, it would be the perfect boaters paradise if you were able to get here. Owning a private island here would probably be a fabulous remote adventure only a boat ride from town.

Have you ever visited peaceful Kenora, Ontario, Canada?

There are fabulous airport hotels and then there are airport hotels that exist just for functionality. This particular location fit into that the latter category. A convenient airport hotel isn’t always a bad thing, but a stay at a property like this values convenience over a luxurious stay full of amenities. As our flight had us arriving late to the airport, we opted for a convenient overnight here, prior to our onward travels the next morning.

Hotel Review: The Four Points by Sheraton, Winnipeg John Richardson International Airport, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

This is a review of The Four Points by Sheraton Winnipeg International Airport. For a review of the other Winnipeg Airport Hotel, please see our review of the Courtyard Winnipeg International Airport.

Booking and Getting there:

The Four Points Sheraton used to be the only airport hotel that is immediately on the property of the Winnipeg Airport. The hotel has now been joined by the Courtyard Marriott Winnipeg Airport and an independent “Hotel Grand”. The Four Points Sheraton used to be immediately across the street in front of the old Winnipeg airport terminal, but that old terminal has now been completely demolished.

Today, it’s a short roll through the underground parkade which is much more pleasant in August, than it was in freezing February the last time I was here.

The Four Points by Sheraton Winnipeg International Airport

Our rate today was a simple $125 CAD ($98 USD) paid rate, which was pretty reasonable for an airport hotel that is almost directly attached to the airport.

Arriving to The Four Points Sheraton:

In the lobby, our check in was handled promptly. As SPG Golds, we were offered a late check out without any prompting. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed on arrival. After check in, we ended up walking back to the terminal for a late night snack from Tim Horton’s.

The Room: A King, Traditional

We led ourselves up to our assigned room. We had no real SPG Gold upgrade provided tonight other than a soft upgrade to a nicer room, although we did get an airside view.

Hallways of the Four Points by Sheraton Winnipeg

Our assigned room this time around was not as nice as on our last visit. It was a standard Four Points variety with the reds and beiges that were used in their decor

Traditional King
View of the Television with Four Points Baskets
View towards the door

The room was a little contemporary brown but surely sufficient and convenient for an airport night.

The room did feature a microwave and a small fridge. These were in an open counter space area and were not enclosed in cabinetry like in some other properties.

An included fridge and microwave

The bathroom had a single vanity, which was about “as expected” for a Four Points brand.

Single Vanity Washroom

It was a relief to have the free water. However, only one bottle was provided for the dry prairies.

Despite being an airport hotel, the sleep experience was really good. The bed was nice and comfortable and quiet unlike most airport hotels. There was minimal aircraft noise, which is great for an airport hotel. There was also reasonably good soundproofing, with most aircraft visiting here being quieter narrow body aircraft and a runway situated far away from the hotel itself.

Room with a View:

We had an airside view from the room. The passage way here used to connect to the old Winnipeg airport. The view is of airport apron dead space so I wouldn’t expect too much in the way of interesting airplane views.

Room with a View

My Thoughts on our stay at The Four Points by Sheraton Winnipeg Airport:

Overall, you can’t beat the convenience of this property. I like the fact that you can walk to and from the airport it without waiting for a shuttle van and the fact that it’s only 5 minutes from the door of the arrivals hall. This means no waiting. Ever. The rooms seem to be a bit of a mixed bag, with some floors offering newer fixtures and fittings compared to others. It’s a bit of luck of the draw to get the newer rooms. The prices are also reasonable.

Despite this, the property has now been eclipsed by the newer and fresher Courtyard by Marriott Winnipeg Airport that is also nearby and within walking distance. If I had to chose between the two, it’s easily the Courtyard, thanks to newer and fresher rooms, larger gym and better views.

Editors Note:

This property is now operating as The Lakeview Signature Collection by Wyndham and was de-flagged by The Four Points by Sheraton in Spring 2020.

With a population spread out across wide distances in Canada, there is usually a lot of travel time between Canada’s cities. With only two major air carriers in Canada, the options for full business class are pretty lean, without a lot of competition as compared to our neighbours to the south. Air Canada has had a monopoly on business travel in Canada for quite a number of years and is the leading choice for regular business travelers. We used upgrade credits to land ourselves into Business Class for today’s flight into Middle Canada.

Review: Air Canada Business Class E190, Vancouver – Winnipeg

“Air Canada Business Class Embraer 190, offers a more comfortable, if not sterile, way of travelling the long distances within Canada

Our round trip flights were purchased in an economy class “Flex” Fare and upgraded using E-Upgrades earned through the Air Canada Aeroplan program. The upgrades were cleared and confirmed in advance at the 10 day window thanks to the Air Canada Top Tier summer promotion, which allowed for a more immediate upgrade than the usual 4 day window. Flying around Canada is a great way to use E-Upgrades since it often involves long distances and the domestic business class fares are often much more expensive than in the United States thanks to lessened competition .

At about T-30 minutes, we left the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Vancouver Domestic and headed immediately across the concourse to Gate C29. Most of the older gates at Vancouver have minimal seating areas, constrained by a building design from the seventies. The boarding had already started on arrival, and we snuck on board thanks to the Priority Boarding lane.

On board Air Canada Embraer Business Class:

On board, we settled into the Embraer 190 Air Canada Business Class Product. We were in the bulkhead today, seats 1D/1F.  There are three rows of Business Class in the Embraer 190, in a 1-2 configuration up front, and a 2-2 configuration in the back in economy class.

The space had a small monitor screen in the bulkhead wall for in flight entertainment, which makes for a more spacious seat since the monitor isn’t stored in the seat walls.

In Flight Entertainment Monitors (Bulkhead)

MrsWT73, as usual, had her opinions. “Oh my gawd, this is like flying cargo.”

Indeed, the space and hard product was nothing like our last trans-contiental flight on Cathay Pacific First Class. The size and space between the two can not be compared in any form, other than it was plainly obvious that the Embraer had a much MUCH smaller footprint. Our flight load today was fully occupied at 9/9 over the 3 rows in the Business Class Cabin.

A Pre-Departure Beverage:

A pretty standard pre-departure beverage was offered of orange juice or water. It’s nothing like the open bar pre-departure beverage on American carriers but it’s still much better than nothing.

Pre-Departure Orange Juice

Air Canada offers printed menus in domestic business class. It’s a classy touch which I personally really like that the verbal “Chicken or beef” question. On today’s flight, the menu was dropped off. The menu offered food information only, with no corresponding wine list.

Air Canada Business Class Menu
Business Class Supper Menu YVR-YWG

Regulars will likely agree that Air Canada offers the same menu items over and over again with the sides rotating on a semi monthly basis. For example, chicken will be served with rice, then next rotation the fish will have the rice. At least it makes for a predictable eating experience but it’s probably not appealing for the Super Elites 100K’s that are always on the go.

The In Flight Entertainment Service:

Air Canada was among the first to offer an advanced video on demand system. This was class leading at the time and was before everyone switched to carrying content on their own devices. The AVOD system was offering a very limited selection of movies, slimmed down from their wide body aircraft. Either they are saving money on movie licences, or they are attempting to speed up the performance of the system that was initially plagued with issues when it was installed in 2008. At any rate, the AVOD was working much faster than when it was first introduced. The system only featured about 11 hollywood movies- just enough to get through a three hour flight.

Air Canada Advanced Video on Demand System

Air Canada still puts some effort into it’s in flight magazine labelled “En Route”. Enroute has taken to featuring an airport code on the cover for the past few years. I think it’s a neat feature as you can see familiar places and new ones that you might not have been to. Unfortunately, as with all airline magazines, most of the articles are limited to places served by the Air Canada network.

I also played around with the usual Moving Map. The moving map had it in its mind that we were headed towards Calgary today.

As we got underway, a cocktail beverage and heated almond service was offered. I stuck with Australian Chardonnay of an unidentified variety.

The Meal Service: Dinner

As it came time to menu ordering, orders were taken by status. We were last even though MrsWT73 at the time was an Air Canada Aeroplan E50k (Mid Year Star Alliance Gold level), and I was a Air Canada Aeroplan E25K (bottom level). Being a dinner flight, demand was high and both the salmon and the chicken were out of stock by the time they got around to us. I ended up with the last choice cannelloni. It was okay, but not even as good as Boston Pizza’s which is saying something about the tastiness of the catering.

This flight’s supper started with the usual Air Canada Mesculin Greens with Balsamic Dressing. It’s a staple on almost every Air Canada Domestic flight for lunch and dinner.

Mesculin Salad with Mixed Pepper Julienne with Balsamic Dressing

The main course was presented separately as cheese and spinach filled cannelloni with creamy tomato sauce and spinach ricotta.

I settled into the movie “District 9” for the remainder of the flight.

Arriving to Winnipeg John Richardson International Airport:

As always, when headed east, we approached and landed in Winnipeg in darkness.

A Flight Track Straight along the Canada / USA Border

We eventually landed at the new Winnipeg John Richardson International Airport. While it can be a little busier during the day, it’s pretty dead at 9 PM at night when we had arrived. Despite being almost midway between Vancouver and Toronto, there isn’t any connecting traffic here late at night since most jets fly straight over without stopping.

Arriving to Winnipeg

Getting off the plane, we entered the new Winnipeg John Richardson International Airport. The baggage hall is pretty cool, and has some bluey circles on the ceiling.

Blue Circles!

Our bags came out somewhere mid stream along with the other bags, despite them being tagged with Star Alliance Priority Tags on them.

The Bottom Line: Our Experience on Air Canada Embraer Medium Haul Business Class

Air Canada really aims to position itself as the best business class in North America. Its passengers are constantly reminded that Air Canada have won Best North American airline by Skytrax 5 years in a row. The problem is that many of the other North American carriers don’t offer a great domestic business class product. The catering was pretty plain and not very exciting. The service on Air Canada, while sometimes outstanding, is usually pretty casual. It still doesn’t compare to many other international business classes. As a result, it’s hard to get super excited about my flights with Air Canada.

If you’ve flown Air Canada Embraer Business Class, what was your experience like?

The Vancouver International Airport is a world class gateway that offers flights to many destinations around the world. Since many of these flights connect onwards towards other destinations in Canada, it’s fitting that they have a decent lounge. The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Vancouver Domestic is a pretty solid domestic lounge with decent windows, comfortable loungers and decent snacks at the right times. It represents a worthy lounge in the Vancouver International Airport lounge offerings.

This is a review of the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge at Vancouver International Airport Domestic, Vancouver, Canada. For information on other Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges at Vancouver International Airport, please see our experience with the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Transborder.

For other lounges at Vancouver International Airport, please see our review of the Plaza Premium Domestic Lounge or in the international departures concourse; the Skyteam International Lounge, the British Airways Galleries Lounge or the Cathay Pacific Business Lounge.

Getting the Vancouver International Airport:

Tonight’s flight started after a work day. A quick Aerocar car service from the house to the airport served our transportation needs. Today they sent a GMC Yukon instead of the usual Lincoln Towncar. Take that James Cameron against all your efforts of global warning!

It’s was a beautiful August day at the Vancouver Domestic Departure Hall, making it a nice day for flying.

Checking Into Air Canada Business Class:

The check in for our Air Canada Business Class flight was handled at the deserted Air Canada Priority Check In on the far right hand side of the domestic terminal. There were no waits in line tonight and we checked two bags full of gifts and accessories to Winnipeg. The Boarding passes were issued on the usual Air Canada stock with a YVR Fast Track sticker for non Nexus Holders.

Leaf frogging ahead of Fast Track, our Nexus cards got us to the front of the line with the security screening checkpoint, but with only two screening lanes open, and the Nexus line depositing us at the front of a regular screening lane, it took a bit of time to get through.

Great sculptures around Vancouver International Airport, the rushing traveler greeting us headed down toward Concourse C.

Accessing the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge:

The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge was accessed today courtesy of our business class ticket for our Air Canada Business Class Vancouver – Winnipeg flight. Unlike in the United States, Air Canada allows for lounge access when flying in domestic or trans-border first class.

You could also get access into the lounge through a business class ticket on Air Canada under the Star Alliance Lounge policy, or by purchasing an annual lounge membership, or through select Canadian based credit card memberships.

Inside the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge:

Having been a frequent visitor to this location, the Domestic Maple Leaf Lounge has seen several evolutions over the years. I would even go so far as to call this location my “home” lounge. The seating has gotten more high density in the last few years as some loungers were replaced with tables and chairs. The lounge offers great windows that have apron views over toward the North Shore Mountains.

Lounge Seating Areas

Ample Seating

The lounge itself is usually crowded in the morning. On today’s visit in the early evening bank of flights, it was pretty empty, We must have arrived at the tail end of the rush. The place was full of half empty beer glasses, crushed crackers on the floor, and spots on the ground. I think my work cafeteria was actually cleaner.

Sadly, the place was really showing signs of wear and tear. If I recall correctly, the lounge was last partially updated with new carpets just prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Worn Carpets

Computer carrels were also available. Thankfully, computers continue to be a standard feature of the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges.

Computer Carrels for Internet Access

The lounge offers a seated area along with the usual bistro tables and chairs.

Food and Beverage:

The food offering at 5 PM has gone slightly upscale. Couscous salads and mixed corn offerings kept things interesting. The usual celery sticks were also available for those feeling more conservative.

Crudities and Mixed Salads

Another area where the lounge gains some ground amonst other North American offerings is with the drink selection. Despite some mediocre wines, they are far better than the domestic offerings at the United Club. Add some reasonable spirits, draft beer and you’ve got an ample drink selection for a purely domestic lounge.

A Solid Liquor Collection

The lounge was accessorized with a bizarre candle arbre wine tree similar to an accessory that you see at a furniture store.

A Lounge with a View:

Although many spots on the floor, the view is certainly unique with wide body aircraft with the mountains in the background.

Views from the Lounge: British Airways Boeing 747
All Nippon Airways Boeing 767 in front of North Shore Mountains
Vancouver International Airport D Gates (Interntaional)

The views from the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Domestic Vancouver are among the best that can be had. The scenic skyline of Coastal Mountains can be easily seen.

My Thoughts on the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Vancouver Domestic:

Overall, the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge offers a reasonable lounge experience. Despite some shabby conditions affecting this lounge, this is one area that they haven’t completely cut costs- except maybe in the carpet and cleaning refurbishments.

If you’ve visited the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge Vancouver Domestic, what was your experience like?

There are times when family duties call. You don’t ever get to chose where family lives but you can chose how to get there. In this adventure, we made the best of it by flying commercially and got ourselves upgraded to Air Canada Business Class.

Trip Introduction: Kenora Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada via Air Canada Business Class

Trip Planning:

MrsWT73 is from “all over”, but her good cousin lives in Kenora, Ontario. The shores of Lake of the Woods Ontario happen to be two and a half hours drive east of Winnipeg on the Trans Canada Highway. Even as a Canadian, I initially had no idea where it was. MrsWT73’s cousin decided to get married which meant an Ontario wedding in our future and of course a visit to rural Ontario.

There weren’t many ways to get to Kenora. The easiest route for us from the West Coast was on Air Canada flying into Winnipeg. Airfare in Canada is expensive as it will ever be. Our economy class “upgradeable to business class” ticket was $780 round trip – a shocking 0.33 cents a mile for travel set in the middle of the summer. From Winnipeg it was a rental car with Avis for a 3 hour drive eastward on the Trans Canada highway. The other alternative into Kenora is the lesser known Bearskin airlines which offers air service from Winnipeg.

We didn’t have a whole lot of choices with respect to hotels on this trip. As a result, we ended up at the Four Points by Sheraton Winnipeg International Airport for one night, and three nights at the Best Western Lakeside Inn and Conference Center in Kenora, Ontario. We booked the Four Points through the Starwood Preferred Guest (now Marriott) website, and the Best Western Lakeside through Rocketmiles with a four thousand Aeroplan Point bonus.

Our last flight of our around the world trip involved classic Lufthansa German Airlines. Lufthansa is among the best carriers in the Star Alliance network and it was a pleasure and privilege to be flying them home. We were able to strategically route our flight back to Canada on their new Business Class configuration that offered their new lie flat seat. In addition to a great new cabin, we had terrific food and a taste among the best cheese airlines have to offer in the air.

Review: Lufthansa Business Class A330-3, Munich – Vancouver

“Lufthansa remains one of the best ways to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Lufthansa Business Class offers a contemporary cabin, outstanding food and beverage and the best cheese plate in premium cabin industry

When we booked our return ticket home, there happened to be reward availability on both the Frankfurt – Vancouver flight and the Munich – Vancouver flight. Despite Munich being a much nicer airport to transit, we were almost guaranteed the refurbished new business class on the Munich flight as all Airbus 330’s departing Munich had been updated and refurbished with the new Lufthansa Business Class cabin. I was keen to try the new product and it was well worth the extra research and effort to fly the better product.

Connecting off our Lufthansa Business Class Warsaw – Munich flight, we crossed the Munich Airport “H” concourse and walked over to gate H18. We had another surprise again. We entered the gate area and had to walk down 4 flights of stairs down to ground level to the bus. Today’s aircraft was parked at a gate position over by the “under construction” new MUC terminal.

Priority Boarding at Munich includes lines

We had double stair boarding, with the majority of the passengers headed to the rear of the aircraft.

Flown: Airbus 330-300

On board Lufthansa Business Class:

Once on board we were treated to the beautiful new Lufthansa Business Class. It’s set up in a 2-2-2 configuration. There are advantages and disadvantages to the 2 – 2 – 2 seating. These seats are great for travelling with someone, but might be a bit more awkward if you are travelling on your own for business or business.

The outer seats both are angled towards their respective left and right windows, where as the center seats are angled inwards toward each other. This means that the outer seats are slightly offset on the Airbus 330 and you are not shoulder to shoulder with your seat mate near the windows.

In terms of the updated look of the cabin, the new colors are contemporary and pleasing and I really liked the modernized look of the cabin compared to the old royal blue with yellow accents configurations in the old Lufthansa Business Class and old Lufthansa First Class configurations.

The Lufthansa Lie Flat Seat:

The seat themselves feature a fully lie flat seat, which is a major improvement from the old angle flat blue slide seat that used to feature across Lufthansa’s fleet network.

The seat itself is super comfortable and was the best business class seat experienced so far on the trip. Reclining was comfortable as the bottom cushion elevates with ideal positioning to have a conversation with your travel mate. No privacy screens between the seats so if you were traveling alone with a stranger next to you, this might not be the ideal configuration. The side seats are slightly offset so that the outside seat is seated a seat cushion distance ahead of the inside seat.

The seat compartments also feature an individual video screen for entertainment, the flight map or movie watching.

Seating with lumbar support feature and entertainment remote

It was a super light load today to Vancouver. Only 12 of 36 seats were occupied in the main business class cabin. We moved from 11H + 11K to 12H + 12K after the doors were closed as we discovered row 11 was missing a window.

A Pre-Departure Beverage:

A pre-departure service of water, orange juice or champagne was offered.

The Amenity Kit: Unbranded with Nivea Products

An amenity kit and a bottle of water located inside the center storage container. The amenity kit was beach like in a black and white motive with a draw string. “MrsWT73 announced: “This is drug store” and lost interest quickly. Indeed, no Bogner lip balms like on Thai. Instead some simple Nivea products, lip balm socks and the usual earplugs and eye shades.

Once we were on our way, we taxied out to the runway. On the runway itself, a problem with a valve resulted in an aborted take off with the plane turning around at the first available taxi way as they sorted out the problems. We circled around to the hold line again and resumed take off with out any issues.

The In Flight Entertainment Service:

Onboard, I explored the new Advanced video on demand. It’s now controlled using a thumb device, which is much easier than the previous generation pointer.

The Meal Service: Lunch

Now airborne, elegant LH business class menus were presented. Lufthansa always goes for more information than less on the menus and I think they are able to achieve this in a classy, refined manner.

A pre dinner drink was offered. Tonight, I opted for my last class of champagne of this round the world trip: Duval LeRoy Champagne.

Lufthansa’s catering continued to shine over almost anyone else on this particular trip. The food was flavorful and tasty. Moreover, at the end of the meal, I actually felt full.

Today’s meal started with an appetizer of Fried Breast of Spring Chicken with Lentil Salad and Truffle Vinaigrette paired with Wolf’s Blass Adelaide Hills Chardonnay Gold Label 2012 Australia.

Appetizer, Seasonal Green Salad, and Wolf’s Blass Adelaide Hills Chardonnay Gold Label

The main continued with Onion Veal Roast with carrots, French Beans and Spatezle, paired with Anura Merlot – Cabernet Sauvingon “Limited Release” Paarl 2001 South Africa. I never turn down an opportunity to enjoy Spatezle in Germany (or on Lufthansa for that matter) so I enjoyed all of it.

Onion Veal Roast with Carrots, French Beans and Spatezle

Being Lufthansa, there was an excellent cheese course to conclude the meal. I enjoyed Ashed Goat Cheese, Bavaria Blu and Tete de Moine presented with Fig Mustard. The Tete de Moine was to die for – nice presentation and always beautiful to eat. I also enjoyed it with the other dessert options of pave of chocolate with jellied raspberries in a true form of gluttony.

A duo of desserts

After dinner it was time to relax. In the case of our flight, having an empty cabin adds to the flight. We left our carry on bags above row 11 and had a more peaceful environment without people around our seats. It also makes the cabin substantially quieter.

This aircraft was also equipped with a Wifi HotSpot. Pricing was aimed at business as 10.95€ for 2 hours seemed a bit steep to me. There was no discount or freebies for those in business class either. I didn’t happen to see many people using the service.

I passed the rest of the flight by watching “The Wolf of Wall Street”. Interestingly enough there was no censorship on LH entertainment systems. Thankfully, no kids around!!

At end of the movie, wanted to sleep. I tried to recline my seat but the electronic seat functions quit- with the seat frozen in a recline relax position. The lead cabin attendant attempted to electronically reset the seat twice but was unsuccessful. We ended up having to move to another seat while he manually pushed and cranked the seats back into upright position. The seat movement was inoperative for the rest of the flight so I slept in another location. We eventually returned to the seats for landing.

In terms of sleep, the seats themselves are indeed fully flat. I found them – especially the aisle ones to be a bit exposed and unprotected without any shell or other frame around them. I also found the seats a bit narrow. Being a side sleeper, it was a little hard to curl up. Otherwise it was much better than the angle flats we had earlier in the trip and likely a lot better than the old Lufthansa Business seats that form the blue slide.

The Second Service: A Light Dinner Snack

About 75 minutes prior to landing, we had a second service of dinner. It consisted of a light meal plated all at once. The meal consisted of soup: Vegetable Popurri in a Tomato Basil Stock, and Mixed Salad with Red Radish, Marinated Crayfish accompanied with Passion Fruit Dressing. To close, a bundt cake with made with banana, coffee and macadamia nuts.

Vegetable Poporri in Tomato Basil Stock & Mixed Salad with Red Radish, Marinated Crayfish accompanied with Passion Fruit Dressing

There were new espresso makers on board with the refreshed cabin but for some reason they were unable to make a cappuccino or a latte. I guess they didn’t install the milk steamers to go along with them. I stuck with a coffee.

As we wound down our flight, I enjoyed the last of the flight map.

Saskatchewan River: Now appearing in British Columbia

We had a beautiful descent today into Vancouver with the mountains. It was a terrific contrast from our desert the descent into Oman earlier in the trip.

We were off the plane and into Vancouver International Airport in no time. We parked at Gate D55 in the International Terminal.

Lufthansa A330 at Gate 55 at Vancouver International Airport

All in all, LH new Business is a very comfortable way to travel. The in flight service was professional but completed as a group. The service itself was mostly forgettable in such large volumes.

The Bottom Line: Our Experience on Lufthansa Long Haul Business Class

Lufthansa’s new business class is head and shoulders above it’s old business class. The product has been well updated with terrific food and beverage. The cheese plate that is typically the best in the world amongst Business Class and even some First Class offerings. Lufthansa Business Class. is now, in the new configuration, easily the best choice for business class to Europe from the Americas.

In a case of “you can’t get there from here”, we were only able to find frequent flier reward space in business to Warsaw from Istanbul via Zurich. The lone Star Alliance Member that offered non stop service “LOT” had no space available, making us take the longer way to Warsaw via Zurich on Swiss Airlines. As a result, we had a stopover in Zurich on the excellent Swiss Airlines Business Class product while we headed up to Warsaw, Poland.

Review: Lufthansa Business Class E190, Warsaw – Munich

“A Simple and Comfortable Short Haul Service with Excellent Catering”

On Board Lufthansa Short Haul Business Class:

Today’s flight to Munich was originally booked on an Airbus 319. There was an equipment swap today to an Embraer 190 which meant a much smaller business cabin with 3 out of 4 seats occupied. There were two rows of business each with 2 seats each in a 1-1 cabin formation. As many are aware, European Business class is actually comprised of 2-2 economy seats with the center aisle seats kept as “your space”.

Pre-Departure Services:

A pre departure beverage of water was served, as on the last Swiss flight. It was a small touch but better than nothing at all.

The Meal Service: A Light Lunch

Catering on today’s flight was, as usual, outstanding by DO & CO. Presentation was on a tray with a fold out menu which I believe is a new feature since the last time I rode LH European Short Haul Business Class.

Arriving to Munich:

We were slightly late landing in Munich but general assurances were made by the public address system that all international connections onward to North America would be made.

We arrived and parked at a non gate position. There was a limo transfer waiting in a gorgeous Mercedes SL 500 but unfortunately it was for the one other passenger in business today (not for us sadly). He was likely connecting to Lufthansa First Class where car services are typically offered where possible.

Lufthansa First Class Limo Waiting for a Lucky Traveler

We disembarked and joined the general bus queue for a transfer to the main terminal.

Lufthansa CityLine Embraer 190

We hopped the bus and transferred to the main terminal for connections to the “H” International Gates. A short 30 minute connection today so no time for the Munich Lufthansa Senator Lounge today. We cleared exit Shengen immigration with a few lost kettles blocking up the fast track line…

Overall, it was another pleasant LH Short haul flight.

Lufthansa City Line Short Haul Business Class Impressions:

The Lufthansa City Line Short Haul Business Class is a pretty reliable and solid service that consistently delivers whenever I fly their product. While it doesn’t offer a truly luxurious seat, it does always offer pleasant service and great tasting food.

LOT Polish Airlines is one of the smaller airlines in Europe. Despite being one of the smaller carriers, it has been in operation since 1928 and is one of the oldest airlines in the world having had ninety two years of operations. LOT Polish Airlines is a member of Star Alliance and offers connectivity around the world. We had the opportunity to visit one its flagship lounges in Warsaw on our trip departing Poland.

Review: LOT Business Lounge Polonez, Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport, Warsaw, Poland

The LOT Business Lounge Polonez is one of several LOT Business Lounges available at Frederick Chopin Airport in Warsaw, Poland. While it used to be the only lounge available, it has now been joined by the LOT Business Lounge Mazurek which serves its international non Shengen flights.

Before we knew it, it was time for the return trip. A quick and easy departure from The Hotel Bristol. The taxi to the airport hailed by the doorman who just happened to be passing by in the street. Today’s fare was 35 PLN ($11 USD) fare to airport.

Warsaw Chopin Airport

Checking into Lufthansa Business Class:

On check in, the line dragon insisted we use the kiosk to check in instead of the business class check in counter. We queued along with others while the computer asked us to verify who we were, resulting us to dig up ticket numbers and that sort of thing. Of course, it took several attempts to get the passport reader to scan the passports. It’s a shame that this isn’t standardized across the industry since every carrier seems to have different systems and alignments.

Lufthansa Business Class Check In
Lufthansa Business Class Check In

Once checked in we were back in the business class check in line for bag drop. Our bags were checked through on our next Lufthansa Business Class flight from Munich – Vancouver. We were encouraged with Eastern European crispness to use the business class security line and lounge. The airport was conveniently designed in a completely separate area, the security check exit led directly towards the lounge.

Direct Access to Security

Locating the LOT Business Lounge Polonez:

The lounge was located shortly after security screening in a central location of the Warsaw Chopin Airport. The lounge was situated up one eleven from the departures concourse, and was accessible either by elevator or escalator.

Escalator Access to the LOT Business Lounge

The LOT Business Lounge is located immediately after security and in the Shengen area. At the Warsaw Frederick Chopin Airport, travelers pass through the Shengen Area to get to the non – Shengen area, meaning that those traveling on international flights could use this particular lounge prior to exit immigration from the EU.

Accessing The LOT Business Lounge Polonez:

The terms and conditions for getting into the LOT Business Lounge Polonez were pretty standard as expected for a Star Alliance Carrier.

The LOT Business lounge “Polonez” is available for:

  • Departing Star Alliance Business Class Passengers
  • Lufthansa Miles and More HON, SEN, FTL (Miles& More, selected flights) status level and Star Alliance Gold Star Members
  • LOT Premium Economy Passengers after paying a fee of PLN 120 per Passenger (at LOT Business Lounge “Polonez” reception)

LOT Business Lounge “Polonez” is not available for Star Alliance FTL members, Business Class and LOT PremiumEconomy Passengers traveling on charter flights.

Today’s access was granted courtesy of our Lufthansa Business Class ticket.

Inside The LOT Business Lounge Polonez:

After we were checked in, we entered the LOT Business Lounge. It’s always intriguing to see the best lounge that any flag carrier has to offer at their home base and primary station. The LOT Lounge was a conservative space and size for short haul flight timings but it would likely be packed full during wide body flights.

LOT Business Lounge Seating
Windows Into the Terminal Provided Atrium Views
A LOT Airlines Stronghold

The lounge had many compact spaces that offered up quiet more intimate spaces instead of larger more open spaces. This actually worked for this place since it was tranquil on our visit.

Small Seating Spaces

Surprisingly and unique for a lounge, the space had several water features and some deep lounge chairs.

Small Spaces against a Green Wall

The LOT Elite Lounge:

The lounge also offered a LOT Elite Lounge. The LOT Elite Lounge is “a lounge within a lounge” concept. It offered a quieter space with different food offerings. At the time of our visit, it was limited to First Class and Lufthansa HON Circle travellers although it has since opened up to other travellers.

Entrance to the Elite Club Lounge

Food and Beverage:

The lounge had a selection of cold cuts and cheeses were available. The LOT Business Lounge had the largest selection of cold cuts I’ve ever seen inside a lounge.

Wrapped Snacks
A Broad Selection of Cold Cuts

More interestingly, in true Eastern European form, the lounge offered a strong selection of stiff alcohol. There was whisky, gin and vodka available. More surprisingly, the pours were a standard four or three ounces per glass without ice. Along with the cold cuts, I’ve never been at a lounge offering such stiff pours!

Direct Pour Liquor
Gin or Whisky

The lounge had limited alcohol. For those bottles that were on display, they did have encouraged 3 oz or larger pours in true Polish style. Wodka was kept separately in the fridge along with the juices.

A four or three ounce pour??

To relax, I started with a 3 oz gin and tonic along with a forest mushroom soup that is oh so popular here in Warsaw, featured as a local delicacy.

Eventually, we headed down to the gate at T-40 for our Lufthansa Business Class Warsaw – Munich flight and a relaxed boarding for our commuter flight. Overall, the LOT Business Lounge was not a bad lounge, but not one of the most memorable either. It made for a pleasant location to rest in prior to the flight.

Boarding at Gate 8
Lufthansa Embarer 190 taking us to Munich

The Bottom Line: The LOT Business Lounge Polonez

The LOT Business Lounge was a pretty straight forward lounge experience. It was a smaller and compact space that offered a lot of more intimate seating locations. While we visited during a quiet period, it would likely are a busy place if we were there during their wide body departures. The lounge provided the largest selection of cold cuts I’ve ever seen in a space, including the stiffest drinks.

Europe is full of terrific towns and city walking experiences that we don’t get in the Americas or many other parts of the world. Our around the world trip had us touching down in Warsaw, Poland for several days, allowing us to take in the streets of Warsaw, Poland and it’s historic Old Town. Our walking experience had us wandering to no particular destination at all, which is sometimes a travel feature all in itself worth treasuring.

This post reflects our visit to Old Town Warsaw Poland. We also visited the Remnants of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Parks of Warsaw.

Getting to Old Town Warsaw, Poland:

We spent a lovely 3 days in Warsaw, Poland. Although sometimes an unusual choice for visiting Europe, it was a terrific pick for visiting Eastern Europe.

We based ourselves at The Hotel Bristol, A Luxury Collection Hotel near Old Town Warsaw, Poland. It was a great choice and very conveniently located. It was a less than 10 minute walk down pedestrian oriented streets to

About the Old Town, Warsaw, Poland:

The Old Town was originally settled in the 13th century. The historic Old Town is an authentic a re-creation of what the town looked like prior to it being demolished during the second World War during the invasion of 1939 by the German Luftwaffe. The restoration was done so well, it was awarded UNESCO Heritage Status. Although the restoration was not exactly to pre-war standards, it’s certainly something that the general tourist like myself can appreciate.

Visiting the Old Town:

It was a pretty easy and care free experience walking the Old Town. Immediately outside the Hotel Bristol, we wandered the pedestrian oriented streets towards the center of Old Town Warsaw. Warsaw was a lovely place to visit, well off the usual beaten path of the tourist trail. This led to a very authentic experience, in spaces that still had a charm to it and were worth exploring on a city break.

A pleasant day for strolling

There were lots of scrumptious things along the variety of European Polish Meats to purchase. I was hoping to travel back to Canada with a meat exemption and a small fridge but I had to settle for just looking and tasting.

Our walking eventually led us to the Old Town Market Square. The Old Town Market Square is the true heart of the Old Town and is the focal point for the city of Warsaw. It houses many townhomes, cafes and sculptures around the space. There was always something interesting going on here, whether it was artists selling their products or people watching to be had, it was an enjoyable place to visit and stroll.

There was something around every corner and a park of town that maintained your curiosity enough to continue exploring.

My thoughts on Walking the Old Town Market Square:

The City of Warsaw, Poland is a great break and a terrific change of scenery. There is always great value in visiting Eastern European countries and Warsaw was no exception. The town still had a charm to it; a place worth exploring. The city was a pleasant spot to spend time simply wandering aimlessly, which sometimes is a perfect travel experience.
