The JW Marriott Miami remains to be one of the better reward redemptions in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program. As an urban and upscale property, Marriott Bonvoy credit card holders have access to this property through an annual certificate with the Marruitt Bonvoy Credit Card. We would stay at this property on a free night redemption getting excellent value on a $600 USD a night room. Read on to see how our stay was.

Review: JW Marriott Miami, Brickell, Miami, Florida, United States of America.
“An Excellent Value on Marriott Bonvoy Free Night Certificates, this upscale urban JW Marriott offers all the amenities of a full service hotel, in the heart of the trendy Brickell neighbourhood of Miami, Florida, USA”
The JW Marriott Miami represents one of the great Marriott Bonvoy reward redemptions in the United States. As a Marriott Bonvoy Category 5 hotel, it’s one of the few luxury hotels that can be used with the annual free night certificates with the American Express Marriott Bonvoy credit card. Since the room rates here can regularly exceed over $500 USD a night, this can potentially represent a great value for travellers.
Booking the JW Marriott Miami:
I booked the hotel directly on the Marriott Bonvoy website. The hotel offered cash rates at the time of our stay that were approximately $430 USD. These rates climbed to $636 USD during our stay. As a result, we used a Free Night Certificate from the American Express Marriott Bonvoy credit card to apply against the room.

This free night redemption from the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Credit Card represented an excellent value in getting a $630+ USD a night room for free. It was probably among the best returns on these certificates I’ve had throughout the life of the program. We booked a base level Guest Room 1 King.
Marriott Suite Night Awards:
The Suite Night Awards pool was pretty limited. Given our short 9 hour hotel stay visit, we didn’t apply any suite night awards to the reservation. At the time of our stay, the hotel offered the upgraded Inspired Suites and “regular” 1 Bedroom Suites in the Suite Night award pools. These were in addition to the Inspired Guest Room that we happened to receive a soft upgrade into as a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium level members.

Getting to the JW Marriott Miami:
1109 Brickell Avenue, Miami, Florida, USA, 33131
The JW Marriott Miami is located in the urban upscale Brickell neighbourhood of Miami, Florida, United States of America. We opted to take a rental car to and from the hotel, given that we were departing at odd hours very early in the morning.
We landed at Miami International Airport from American Airlines Business Class Curaçao – Miami. As we were arriving from the Dutch Overseas Republic of Curaçao, we cleared international customs with Global Entry and headed via the MIA people mover to the Miami Rental Car Center.

Rental a car with Hertz Ultimate Choice at a major American airport is about as good as it gets. With a dedicated area for Hertz President’s Circle Elites, it doesn’t get much better than choosing any available car in the area and go.

There wasn’t much in the Hertz Ultimate Choice Aisle today with a few tired looking Ford Escapes Chevrolet Impala’s and Nissan Rogue SUV’s. There were a few Porsche Macan’s, Tesla Threes and Range Rovers in the Premium Upgrades aisle today, but we ended up settling on the best of what’s left with a freshly washed Silver 2022 Nissan Maxima with 4,300 miles on the odometer, for our brief rental today.

We drove over from Miami International Airport to the JW Marriott in Brickell Miami. This took us about 27 minutes in Tuesday rush hour traffic, despite the hotel being only about 6 miles from the airport. It is worth noting that many of the regular highways around the airport operate on the Florida SunPass system which involves a pay toll. We used the urban city streets to bypass the hotel in order to get around inconvenient tolling systems and administrative car rental service charges.
The JW Marriott Miami is located in the upscale Brickell neighbourhood of Miami. It is conveniently located near many restaurants, upscale urban walking spaces and within many modern conveniences including drug stores ands a Liquor Barn.

Checking Into the JW Marriott Miami:
We arrived to the JW Marriott Miami. We parked in the porte cochere and were immediately attended to by the arrival team which included a valet group. Assistance was immediately offered with bags.

The valet team explained that the parking was $42 USD and included 24 hour in and out privileges. There is no self park option at this particular property.

It’s also worth mentioning that the design of this hotel (when arriving by car) has a series of stairs in order to navigate. Road warriors that like to self navigate without assistance will have to use the side elevator to get up to the lobby level.

We rode up the short elevator to the lobby level which was one level up from ground floor. The lobby has an old man’s library feel to it and is decorated in dark mahogany browns accented with white leather furniture. It provides an upscale but not all to memorable lobby setting.

There was no line at check in and we were immediately attended to.
At check in, we were offered a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium soft upgrade to a renovated room. The hotel has been undergoing a renovation of all its rooms and had been charging more for the “Inspired” branded (renovated) rooms.

However, we received an upgrade to a nicer room in the Inspired category. I did happen to notice prior to checking in that some suites were available for sale on line “almost sold out” basis, so it must be a hotel policy not to upgrade Marriott Bonvoy Platinums / Titanium’s to suites. Given a short stay, and because we were headed out for the evening, I did not further pursue the issue.
Breakfast was also offered between 6:30 AM – 10 AM as a result of the lounge being closed. As we were leaving before 6;30 AM, we were not able to participate and just accepted the Marriott Bonvoy Titanium welcome bonus of 1,000 Welcome Points.
The Room: An Inspired Guest Room – 1 King.
The hotel rooms in the JW Marriott Miami all face 9th Avenue in a long straight corridor. The corridor is a light colour which is soothing to the eyes but, being a light colour, tends to show a lot of marks. We led ourselves up to Room #611.

Room #611 was a compact Inspired guest room. While it was a standard sized room, it didn’t have a super spacious feel to it.
The room was nicely decorated with a comfortable and soft king size bed. The pillows were soft; almost a little too soft for my tastes.

The room featured a long counter space for storage.

Being a JW Marriott, the room was well appointed with a full mini bar. There were snacks available for purchase, in addition to Fiji water.

The room layout for the hotel offers a straightforward design. It has thirteen rooms per floor, with one suite per floor.

The bathroom offered a single vanity. The bathroom had a stand up shower with a rain shower / wand combination. I used the rain shower during the stay, which I found to be okay without much strong pressure or a wide drizzle pattern. It certainly wasn’t the most memorable rain shower experience of my hotel stay. Despite not being memorable, the bathroom was recently renovated and looked great and stylish.

The soaps were the upscale Hopal variety.

The room overlooked 9th street. When taking in the view, it had an office like feel to the environment.

The sleep quality was good and we didn’t hear any street traffic or noise from other guests after the lights went out. The room was also nice and dark with the thick curtains.
Around the Property:
The Outdoor Pool:
The JW Marriott Miami offers a small outdoor pool and deck space off the spa reception. The spa appeared to be a bit of an after thought and it located in a nice office like space. It is not a purpose built facility bit a perfectly private space in order to check in to a spa appointment.

The outdoor pool looked inviting. Unfortunately, the outdoor pool was completely closed between 1 PM – 8 PM on our visit due to a private event (conference) that was being held at the hotel. This information was only made available to us at check in.

The hotel offers a small gym split across two rooms. The rooms were quite tiny and adjacent to the pool area. There were a few elliptical and treadmills, although I would expect as a business hotel that this area would get quite busy during the after work hours and you may need to fight for a machine or be prepared to wait.
The Terraza Café and Bar
The hotel’s restaurants were mostly located on the second level. The Terraza Café and Bar, like the lobby, was also decorated in dark woody colours. It didn’t appear to be too exciting or inspiring a place to hang out but would have been perfectly suitable for a light lunch or dinner.

The other hotel restaurant was Isabella’s. This location was completely closed on our visit and was listed as the hotel’s breakfast dining option.

Visiting the Brickell neighbourhood:
After we had settled in, we left the hotel to go and get dinner in the Brickell neighbourhood of Miami.
The Brickell neighbourhood has many upscale eateries and restaurants. Immediately one block to the West is South Miami Street, which offers dozens of restaurants. Many of these offer dining until late (past 10 PM on a weeknight). With so many great choices around the hotel that are within a reasonable walking distance, it’s easy to find something to eat off property.

There is also a CVS Pharmacy immediately next to the hotel that is open twenty four hours a day.
Departing the JW Marriott Miami:
When it came to depart, we had an early departure for our American Airlines First Class Miami – Los Angeles flight. We were up at 2:30 AM for a departure from the JW Marriott Hotel at 3:15 AM, in advance of a 6:03 AM flight departure.
While I was still in the room at 3 AM, I called the number on the valet ticket to have our car brought up from valet parking. I was led into an automated call tree “Press 1 for Departure” & “Press 1 for Final Departure from Hotel”. I received an ambiguous message indicating that the call was being processed. However, when I went to the valet stand fifteen minutes later, the car wasn’t there. The valet attendant stated that no one had called him. He went to go collect the car, which was fortunately there in a quick 5 minutes.
I went down to the front desk to check out. The desk was unattended and it took a while to locate someone given the early morning hour. They were unable to check me out given the time at 3:15 AM, so I just returned the key in order to get my folio later. I later used the self check out feature via the Marriott Bonvoy App. I received my folio electronically through the mail without incident.
Since we were on a reward stay, we didn’t earn points on the room rate. My 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points for the Titanium Welcome Bonus posted to my Marriott Bonvoy account without any issues.
The Bottom Line: The JW Marriott Miami
The JW Marriott Miami is the type of hotel that is great to stay during a business trip. The accommodations are upscale, the rooms are well appointed and there are lots of great restaurants within a 10 minute walk that would be great to enjoy if you were on business expenses. It is a bit of a less exciting stay on a personal leisure trip, since you’re surrounded by glass towers and expensive restaurants. As a result, I can see why many Marriott Bonvoy reward travellers don’t redeem at this particular hotel when there are many other great Miami Marriott Bonvoy options out there in South Beach or with greater leisure features. Being our first visit to the Brickell neighbourhood of Miami, it was a great opportunity to test out this property to try something new and I would certainly consider the property again if my travels took me this way.
What Marriott Bonvoy Property have you discovered that was an excellent redemption value ?
American Airlines has the leading market share on flights to the Caribbean from it’s hub in Miami International Airport in the United States. Being located on in the Pacific Northwest, it’s an area that had escaped our travels. We would test out American Airlines Business Class service from Curaçao to Miami from the Southern Caribbean on their Boeing 737 – 800 series product today.

Review: American Airlines Business Class B737-8, Curaçao Hato International Airport – Miami International Airport
This flight was the start of a lounge journey home from the Carribiean to the Pacific North West. We were on a series of flights today starting with American Airlines Business Class Curaçao – Miami, followed by American Airlines First Class Miami – Los Angeles, lastly to American Airlines Business Class Los Angeles – Vancouver.
We flew down to Curaçao on American Airlines Business Class B737-Max 8 Miami – Curaçao, so please feel free to check out that review to see what the flight looks like on the way down to Curaçao.
We left the Curaçao VIP Lounge Hato International airport and headed to gate 4 located right across from the lounge. We were departing Curaçao after a seven day trip. Unfortunately, there was no where to change my last Dutch Gilder currency, as there was no currency exchange at the airport that we saw.

Our American Airlines Boeing 737-800 series aircraft was parked at Gate 4 when we arrived. At the time of our trip, there were two flights a day between Miami to Curaçao. One flight was on a Boeing 737 Max 8 product, where as the other flight was on their Boeing 737-800 series that is the subject of this review.

We boarded at Gate 4 with Group One boarding. MrsWT73 got sent into additional security screening thanks to an “SSSS” on her boarding card. This was affected immediately after a scan of the boarding card right at the gate.
While she was undergoing that screening, I wandered down the jet bridge where they held us for a little while prior to actually boarding the aircraft.

2:40 PM – 5:55 PM
Booked: Boeing 737-800
Flown: Boeing 737-800
On Board American Airlines Business Class:
Todays’ flight was on American Airlines Boeing 737-800 business class product. It is set up in a 2 – 2 configuration with 4 rows of “First Class” or “Business Class”, depending if you are flying internationally or domestically through the United States on this equipment type.

The seats offer in seat power by Empower seat power or also by USB plug in.
Pre-Departure Services:
There was no pre- departure beverage offered today. American Airlines now boards in up to nine boarding groups. As a result, we had plenty of fellow passengers stream past us as they headed down the cabin towards the back.
Flying to international destinations always offers the chance to see interesting aircraft. Our plane happened to be parked next to a Jet Air Fokker F70.

Our cheery purser in charge promptly arranged for everyone to get seated and we were underway out of Curacao on Runway 11. Once airborne, we had an immediate U turn to head toward a westerly direction. We said good bye to Curaçao with some last glances at the Caribbean island.

The Meal: A Light Snack
Once we had arrived to cruising altitude, the meal service started right away. We started off with a towel service, which was presented with a very tired looking towel.

The dinner service started with a drink offering and mixed warmed nuts. I had my usual Gin and Tonic, which was served with Aviation American Gin and Canada Dry Tonic Water.

The lunch offering was a choice of a vegetarian sandwich or the charcuterie tray we had on our earlier flight. Being seated in row #2, I actually had the opportunity to get my first choice of the vegetarian sandwich.

Vegetarian sandwich served on a croissant with spinach, cheese and tomato
The vegetarian sandwich was served on a croissant with spinach, cheese and tomato. It was paired with the broccoli salad with sesame seeds and cranberries in a cream dressing It was actually tasty.

In Flight Entertainment:
The “in flight entertainment” was offered through the American Airlines wifi. There was a substantial amount of movies available on the flight. As there were no seat back monitors, you had to bring your own device with you.

While there were no i-Pad’s passed out like Alaska Airlines, I was able to access the entertainment through the American Airlines in flight wifi and app similar to on our previous flights.

I ended up settling into Casino Royale for me as one of the better Danial Craig James Bond films for the balance of this flight.
Arriving into Miami:
Towards the end of our flight, we descended into Miami International Airport over Interstate Highways of the United States. We eventually arrived into Miami International Airport at Gate D45.

We deplaned and passed though US Customs and Border Protection among a whole series of Caribbean flights. It was a very bust and darker arrivals area, with low ceilings and heavy amount of baggage changing hands. With Global Entry, we were through pretty quickly.

We headed out over to the Car Rental Center and into a Hertz Rental on our way to the JW Marriott Miami for the night.
My Thoughts on American Airlines Business Class from the Caribbean:
The American Airlines Business Class product on its flights to the southern Caribbean was a more comfortable way to travel. While I was happy to get our first choice of meals this time around, it wasn’t all that filling. American Airlines Business Class is a step up against economy class, but it wasn’t super luxurious or amenity filled.
If you travel on American Airlines, do you make sure you fly up front when flying around the Caribbean ?
The Curaçao VIP Lounge was the only business class lounge operating in the Hato International Airport near Willemstad, Curaçao. While we weren’t expecting greatness from a Caribbean Airport Lounge, we were quite pleasantly surprised with the facilities offered at the Curaçao VIP Lounge. The space was easily accessed through a Priority Pass membership. Read on to see how our experience was visiting this comfortable and newly renovated space.

Review: Curaçao VIP Business Lounge – Hato Internatonal Airport, Willemstad, Curaçao
As our Dutch Caribbean adventure came to a close, it came to depart the Carribiean for the Pacific Northwest region of North America. We departed the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort and drove to the airport which was situated just 11 kilometres from town.
We returned the car with Hertz. We had a thorough check with the car rental return, including the spare tire and tools. We checked out and closed our contract at the island counter.

The Curaçao Hato International Airport is set up into an older arrivals hall and a newer departures hall. We wheeled ourselves over past the arrivals hall where we entered the country and onwards to the departure building.

It was quite a walk along side the older yellow building. I passed by the directional sign in the parking lot which set out a whole series of directions from our spot on the airport property.

It was quite a walk through the Carribean heat from rental car return over to the departures terminal. If I were doing it all over again, I would make sure to drop the bags at the departure terminal, then return the car. This would make for a cooler walk in the Caribbean heat, without pulling lots of baggage.

Checking into American Airlines Business Class:
Once at the Curaçao Hato International Airport Departures Hall, we entered into the cooling air conditioned departures hall and checked into American Airlines First Class. The newer facility was pretty sterile, clean and without much personality.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the public departures hall was the interesting flight display monitor. The board revealed a whole host of Caribbean flights to some interesting regional destinations in neighbouring Aruba and Bonaire.
During our check in process, we had our vaccination pre-tests checked and MrsWT73 had to complete a paper attestation certifying her vaccination status for flying into the United States. We received boarding cards for our American Airlines Business Class Curaçao – Miami, American Airlines First Class Miami – Los Angeles, and American Airlines Business Class Los Angeles – Vancouver flights.
We proceeded to immigration on the first floor. Although they had E – Gates to depart Curaçao Immigration and Customs they all appeared to be “out of order” today. As a result, we received an old fashioned stamp to get out of Curaçao today.
Locating the VIP Lounge:
We headed upstairs into the secure side departures hall. After security screening, we had a pass through the large Praha duty Free section.
The VIP Lounge is discreetly located across Gate #4 at the west end of the large Penha duty free zone that occupies much of the departures hall at Curaçao Hato International Airport. While there were lots of interesting alcohols, there weren’t many deals being offered by Penha Duty Free.

Making our way down the concourse, we eventually came to Gate #4 and the VIP Lounge which was tucked away behind some grey storefront.

Accessing the Curaçao VIP Lounge:
Our international flight with American Airlines Business Class did not automatically include lounge access to the VIP Lounge Curaçao Hato International Airport.
Instead, the Curaçao VIP Lounge is accessible through a variety of Lounge memberships. The lounge is a member of both Lounge Key and Priority Pass membership. The lounge is also a part of Loungebuddy, Diners Club International and DragonPass.
Our access today was granted courtesy of Priority Pass Select membership with the American Express Platinum Card.
The lounge is also accessed for business class passengers travelling on through Avianca, KLM and COPA so if you are travelling on these carriers, there are chances that your business class ticket will include lounge access.
The lounge is also accessible through cash or credit card payment. Entry was available for $32 USD at the time of our visit.
The reception agent processed our entry through the American Express Platinum Card and waved us into the lounge.
Inside the Curaçao VIP Lounge:
The lounge has been recently renovated with new paint and furniture. Just past reception immediately upon entering the lounge, was the primary seating area. It holds about thirty passengers in comfortable lounge chairs. The space was marked with high ceilings along with day light windows that led in a fair amount of light.

The lounge is set up in an L shaped seating configuration, with additional seating moving around the side of the lounge. The seating itself was comfortable and spacious.

Along the back wall of the lounge was additional seating, along with a play area and the nearby full service bar. This was the darkest space of the lounge, given that it didn’t have any window facing areas.

The wifi in the lounge worked, although it did drop on occasion. Fortunately, it was fairly easy to re-connect with a few pop up windows to pass through in order to re-gain connection through a smart phone.
Food and Beverage:
During our visit to the lounge, which was over lunch hour, there were light snacks available. Near the reception, the food station was set up.

The foods included green salad, cubed meats and cheeses, salad dressings, parkerhouse rolls and chicken noodle soup.

I was pretty impressed with the amount of food on offer for an unbranded lounge in a Caribbean Airport. There was more than something for everyone. The salads were fresh and the food had a good crisp taste to it.

The food service was available on Japanese style small trays. As I mentioned in, the food was surprisingly fresh. I enjoyed a green salad that was crisply cut and not wilted by any means. The cut cheese / sliced meats were also freshly cut and tastier than expected.

In addition to the food in the lounge, the lounge partnered with food service provider in the airport. Food was available for order by scanning a QR code from within the lounge. The external food seemed to be on a cash basis, and I didn’t see anyone taking advantage of the restaurant food.

The lounge featured a full service bar. The drinks were on offer were the usual spirits and white wine chilled in a large ice bucket. The lounge entry offered a maximum of three drinks per person, which was tracked through a stamp on the back of a voucher issued at check in.

We enjoyed a surprisingly good visit experience prior to departing on our American Airlines Business Class Curaçao – Miami flight back home.
Overall: Our Experience at the VIP Lounge Curaçao
The VIP Lounge Curaçao Hato International Airport was a surprisingly reasonable lounge for a sunny island airport. It was much better than our offerings that we had experienced in French Polynesia, Fiji and our usual haunts in Hawaii. The lounge did not get a lot of visitor traffic but the food quality and freshness was much better than expected for an island airport. I wouldn’t hesitate to return to this location as part of my travels through Curaçao.
If you travelled from Curaçao Hato International Airport, did you visit the Curaçao VIP Lounge ?
The Caribbean island of Curaçao has a remote private island located just off it’s shores. The Klein Curaçao island is a remote island located on the south east shores of Curaçao. A day trip to the island offers your own opportunity to be cast away for a day in an environment that’s completely surrounded by shipwrecks, emerald blue waters and abandoned lighthouses. Follow us along our day on the island to see what is there to be explored.

Activity: City Visit – Crossing the Queen Emma Bridge into Willemstad, Curaçao
During our time in Curaçao, we made some time to visit the capital city of Willemstad. Willemstad was located a short distance away from our hotel.
While it could be accessed by taxi from many resorts, we typically elected to self drive. In doing so, we avoided any taxi fare negotiations from any taxi mafia that may have been operating in this tourist destination.
Getting to Willemsted, Curaçao:
We typically left our hotel located at the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort and drove down towards the city. It was less than a short ten minute drive. We typically found car parking near the Renaissance Wind Creek Curacao Resort.
The Renaissance Wind Creek Curacao Resort anchored a very touristed resort complex that also featured a reception facility for cruise ship passengers. While I had debated spending a night or two at this property over the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort, I was really happy that we spent all our time at the Curaçao Marriot Beach Resort. By comparison, the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort looked a little casino oriented and wholly forgettable with a platform pool and artificial beach overlooking an un-swimmable harbour ocean.
The mall adjacent to the Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort offered a Starbucks Coffee shop (where we purchased Curaçao branded travel mugs), a casino and a multiplex of cinemas; all items that were not really Caribbean in nature.

We passed through the Rif Fort Area over towards the Queen Emma Bridge.
Crossing the Queen Emma Bridge:
We crossed over the Queen Emma Bridge, which was a floating pedestrian bridge that spanned the Williemstad harbour channel. The bridge had a nice wide wooden feel to it and it was a a great way to access Willemstad.

There were views up the channel to the vehicle bridge that rose over the harbour. It had enough height to it in order to allow the passage of cruise ships underneath it.

Walking the Streets of Colonial Willemstad:
After crossing the Queen Emma Bridge, we found ourselves in Colonial Willemstad. The buildings consisted of Dutch Colonial styled houses that reminded me of a colorful version of Amsterdam. The city has been preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site of substantial cultural influence.

Along with the historic cannons, we located the usual lock display of all the travellers whom had come to Curaçao to get locked together in the form of marriage.

Immediately after getting off the Queen Emma Bridge, we found ourselves near the Fort Church in Williemstad. The fort was part of one of the initial defences of Curaçao. It now houses some city administration buildings.

We eventually wandered the narrow streets of Willemstad, Curaçao. We found some interesting narrow streets that had some appeal to them but were perhaps missing a little personality to them. The streets contained many cruise ship visitor amenities: Duty Free Stores, Currency Exchanges and Souvenir Stores.

Despite this, if you looked hard enough, there were some charming places to Willemstad. There were leafy courtyards, statutes and charming outdoor statute terraces. Almost striking by contrast, was how deserted the city was in the late afternoon when no cruise ship was in town.

Occasionally, there were also engaging murals along the alleyways of Curaçao. They would all tell a story of a city that was almost deserted when there was no cruise ship in port or visiting.

Willemstad After Dark:
The city of Willemstad changed its stripes after dark. It sprung alive with dining spots, eclectic taverns and foodie spots springing open after dark.

We found ourselves at Mundo Bizarro, a Cuban Jazz restaurant and lounge that spilled out onto the street. There were no need for reservations here, the place was pretty packed throughout our visit.

We were able to get a cocktail on the pandemic ally safe outdoor patio while we enjoyed the evening. MrsWT73 had a small tumble down the erratically designed stairs but with a pack of ice the next morning, she would be able to continue on the trip without crutches or a trip to the local hospital.

Williemstad after dark had a much different and jovial atmosphere. It brought out many people whom were avoiding the heat of the day, allowing for some pleasant walking throughout the area.

The city really came alive in the evening, and was much more popular than during our afternoon walks through the city.

After a pleasant evening and a walk back over the Queen Emma Bridge, we returned back to the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort for a pleasant sleep.
My Thoughts on our time in Willemstad, Curaçao:
Cruise Ship port cities can sometime be over touristed and commercial. However, our time in Willemstad by afternoon and after dark presented an engaging city with restaurants, lounges and bars worth exploring. I was happy to have seen the area on a visit basis and didn’t feel the pressing need to spend a lot of time in the city by staying in the area at a nearby hotel.
If you have visited Willemstad, did you find it an engaging port city visit ?

Activity: Cast Away on a Remote Island on Klein Curaçao, Curaçao
One of the most popular tourist attractions in the Dutch Caribbean Island of Curaçao is the island of Klein Curaçao. The island is also known as Little Curaçao.
Klein Curaçao is a small uninhabited island that is located ten kilometers south east of Curaçao. It’s has a lengthy history as previously being involved as a slave trading processing location where the sick were placed in quarantine before coming ashore in Curaçao. It was also a location for mining of phosphate across the island, which rendered much of its surface lower than before. All of these unique features render the island an interesting, if not savage place to be cast away for the day.
Booking a Boat Trip to Klein Curaçao:
We booked with Mermaid Boat Tours to Klein Curacao. It was about $130 USD per person for the day trip booked through payment sites that wouldn’t accept my Alaska Mileage Plan Mastercard.
We we able to get our preferred choice of availability up to about 3 days before travel. While we wanted a clear day, and needed to check the on site weather, it was recommended to book in advance in order to avoid disappointment.
Getting to Klein Curaçao:
We had a 5:30 AM wake up from the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort hotel we left the hotel property at about 6:15 AM. We self drove ourselves to the Mermaid site located in the harbour with a requested departure time of 6:45 AM. We arrived at 6:46 AM And were among the last to arrive.

We loaded up and departed about 7:10 AM. It was announced as a rough 2 hours drive out to the Klein Curacao.

As morning broke for the day, it was indeed a slow going trip out to Klein Curaçao. It was indeed a little rough waters. I ended up taking 2 Gravol ginger tablets which worked like a charm.

Arriving to Klein Curaçao:
On arrival to Klein Curaçao, we had a tender to shore. With our arrival time at 9:25 AM, we were given until 3:15 PM to explore the island and enjoy the day.

Once we landed on shore, we set ourselves up to enjoy the wonderfully sandy beach. It was the finest sand that we had experienced for our beach visits in Curaçao.

We set up with complimentary beach chairs as we enjoyed the beach for most of the morning. The lawn chair loungers were provided by our tour operator Mermaid.

I went for a short walk and made it up the beach to visit the local map. I also had an opportunity to climb the observation tower to take in a panoramic view

Klein Curaçao Lighthouse:
Towards the mid point of the day, when the sun got to be a little much, I wandered to check out the Klein Curaçao Lighthouse. The Klein Curaçao Lighthouse was first built in 1850, and was rebuilt in 1879. It was most recently rebuilt in 2017. As a result of it’s weathered look in the middle of the desert island, it’s got a rustic abandoned look to it.

The Klein Curaçao Lighthouse is located in the middle of the island. It’s accessible by some torn up land trails from various locations surrounding the beach.

The Klein Curaçao Lighthouse has a really mysterious feel to it. It photographed beautifully against the arid landscape.

Locating the Shipwrecks on Klein Curaçao:
There were a few shipwrecks located on Klein Curaçao. We wandered past the Klein Curaçao Lighthouse and onwards where the shipwrecks could be located on the horizon. The ship was apparently wrecked at the location in 1987.

From the shipwrecks, we headed back towards the beach for the balance of the afternoon.

Departing Klein Curaçao:
Before we knew it, it was time to depart Klein Curaçao. Being the rush, we became among the first on the boat tender transfer back to the boat. This was a little selective on our part to get the first choice of seats. It was windy throughout the afternoon so the wind sailers were out in full force.

We were leaving the beautiful emerald blue water. We were fortunate enough to see a turtle on departure; one of the few we would see while we were in Curaçao.

We had about ninety minutes ride back to the pier in a much smoother and calmer ride back.
We were dropped off and we paid for drinks throughout the day on the honour system just as we were getting off the boat. Consistent with the European background of the Dutch Caribbean, we were not ground for tips.
Overall, it was a really nice day on Klein Curaçao. It was very idyllic and a nice island get away for the day.
Sundowner and Dinner at Jan Thiel Beach:
From the Mermaid pier, we went over to Jan Thiel Beach. We were pretty salty from being in the water but it was the best nearby choice for apres snorkel sunset drinks and dinner.
Arriving at the beach at 5:30 PM, they didn’t make us pay the daily cover to enter. We parked on the street outside the gates and walked in.
The Jan Thiel Beach is a bit of a local scene hot spot place. It consists of a fully artificial beach on top of a concrete slab packed with lawn chairs.

Although it is a hot spot, you’ll never confuse this artificial platform for one of Curaçao’s wonderful world class beaches of Cas Abao or Grote Klip. I was really glad we didn’t invest (or waste) a day at this particular location. While we’d likely have seen many fashionable celebutantes, it would have been at the cost of a lack of natural physical geographic beauty.

There are 5 restaurants to choose from at the Jan Thiel Beach. We ended up at the centrally located Dinner drink at Zanzibar Beach Resort Restaurant. Bashara Beer and a Rose for MrsWT73.
We ended up staying for dinner and got some great sunsets. I had a portugese chicken which was terrific, while MrsWT73 enjoyed a pizza.

Despite the artificial nature of the Jan Thiel Beach, the sunsets from the restaurants were pretty spectacular. The shot of the sun descending throughout the trees made for some photogenic shots.

After dinner, we drove home to the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort and a quiet night in after a shower and great sleep.
My Thoughts on the Day Trip to Klein Curaçao:
It’s always neat to be cast away on a private island. Our day trip to Klein Curaçao felt exactly like that, being cast away on a island away from all civilization. We enjoyed the beach, a walk through the Klein Curaçao light house and enjoyed looking at some of the whip wrecks on the island. A day trip to Klein Curaçao is a must visit for any trip to Curaçao and we found the time to be well spent.
If you have visited Klein Curaçao, what was your favourite feature of the remote island ?
The Caribbean island of Curaçao has some of the most interesting beaches and bays that surround it’s emerald coloured coast line. We would get the opportunity to explore many of these shores during our seven day stay in Dutch Curaçao. Our second day visit was to the Grote Knip Beach, which was located a short distance away from our hotel. We would get the chance to explore this cove on today’s visit.

Activity: The West Island’s Most Famous Beach at Grote Knip, Curaçao
The Caribbean Island of Curaçao offers a ring of wonderful beaches and coves. As a result of having access to a rental car, we were able to self guide ourselves around the island.
We started our day at the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort. After a breakfast in the morning, we loaded up the car for another day for Grote Knip.
Grote Knip is among the most famous of the beaches in Curaçao. It occupies one of the hardest locations to reach on the island with a location at the far north end.
We had a hotel breakfast and loaded up the car for Grote Knip.
Driving to Grote Knip:
Our drive up to Grote Knip was 47 minutes up island. It was a pretty relaxed drive without much to see on the road itself.

On arrival, there was free parking and a newly expanded parking lot. We gathered up stuff before heading down to the beach.

Before we headed down, we stopped at the Grote Klip overlook. Grote Knip is absolutely a stunner of a beach to look at.

The water color here at Grote Knip is absolutely incredible. There isn’t anything that isn’t enticing about the waters at the beach here.

Unlike our visit to Cas Abo, the beach access at Grote Knip was completely free. There was a chair use fee of 15 GFL ($8.40 USD). This was collected from a roving attendant. We were also given a receipt on purchase.
The Beach at Grote Knip:
The sand at the beach was much finer than at Cas Abao. We didn’t need to have sandals in the water or any other foot protection.

The setting was quite idyillic and peaceful. I took a wander down to the left end the beach, and saw some of the local rock outcroppings.

There was also a hut settling local deep fried snacks and fries.

During our stay, we also had a visit from one of the local residents. While I have yet to make it to Exuma in the Bahamas, it was neat to have a little local visitor come and give us a sniff while we relaxed in his environment.

We did manage to enjoy the waters of Grote Knip beach. It was an utterly peaceful way to spend a day in this beautiful corner of the world. The water was of reasonable temperature.

I tried some snorkeling off the west rocks but didn’t see too much of anything.
We eventually headed home after a peaceful day at the beach.

Stayed until about 5:20 PM when the beach started to clear out. A lazy drive back to town.
We headed back to the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort for a sunset on the resort property.
My Thoughts on the Day Trip to Grote Knip:
The Grote Knip Beach is quite a ways away from Willemstad, Curaçao. However, despite the distance, its well worth the effort to get all the way up to the top of the island. The space is serene and, as a result of the distance, a lot less travelled.
If you have visited Grote Knip, did you find it worth the distance travelled ?

Activity: The Sands of Cas Abao Beach, Curaçao
The Caribbean Island of Curaçao offers a ring of wonderful beaches and coves. As a result of having access to a rental car, we were able to self guide ourselves around the island.
We started our day at the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort. After a breakfast in the morning, avocado toast with local honey drizzle, we loaded up the car and to Cas Abo Beach today.
Cas Abao Beach was rated as one of the top 21 beaches of the world (at number 18) thanks to it’s sea wildlife that it around the beach area. The Cas Abo beach is a pay per access beach with all the amenities that come with it: showers, washrooms, wifi, and even beach side massage at $66 USD for one hour.
We navigated our way up to Cas Abao which was located 25 km from our hotel and about a thirty minutes drive. It was an easy two lane drive up the central island highway. We had downloaded Google Offline Maps to our iPhones, so it was pretty easy for us to get to where we needed to be.

Accessing to Cas Abao Beach:
We arrived to the private beach in the early afternoon. There was an attached parking lot, which was about half full during our April visit.
The admission to Cas Abao Beach was 10 ANG Dutch Gilders GLF ($5.50 USD) to onto the beach plus 5 GLF ($2.70 USD) per chair to rent. We were able to arrive and park at 2 PM in the lot when we arrived although I would imagine that this may get full on the weekends. We paid a roving attendant after we settled on the beach chair.

After arriving, we walked through the entry gates and over to the beach. We passed by the beach’s facilities, which included a surf shop and a several thatched huts which offered a beach snack bar and washrooms.

In terms of seating, as a result of arriving late, we were related to a spot in the sun. There are some shady spots on the south side of the beach. However, they were all spoken for by Dutch Senior Citizens during our visit.
The Cas Abao Beach:
The beach itself is a nice sandy beach with a mild seasoning of rocks. I’d recommend bringing some sandals or water shoes here as some areas of the beach were a little stoney.

The waters of the bay were a beautiful emerald colour with a gradual sandy outbreak. The protected bay also made the waters very calm and absent of any strong waves.

I went for a walk down towards the east end of the beach. There were some beautiful rock walls that fronted the edge of the beach. They made for some stunning contrasts against the blue waters of the Cas Abao Beach.

Swimming at Cas Abao:
The Cas Abao Beach was very nice and sheltered bay that was perfect for swimming. The beach emptied out after 3:30 PM so we had much of the place to ourselves after that time.

The colours of the Cas Abao bay were really pretty as the sun started to set.

We ended up leaving Cas Abao at 5:30 PM. Most of the visitors had left much before that but we enjoyed the fact that many had left for the day. The beach was a little rocky so I recommend you bring your sandals. We headed back to the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort for a sunset on the resort property.
My Thoughts on the Day Trip to Cas Abao:
The Cas Abao Beach is one of the more accessible beaches that is relatively close to Willemstad, Curacao. The beach itself is a wonderful preserve of nature that is quiet, peaceful with a gorgeous swimming bay.
If you have visited Cas Abao Beach, did you find the place to be a terrific beach ?
Our visit the the Carribean Island of Dutch Curaçao had us staying on the island for seven nights. We needed a place to stay that was a combination of resort, but was also of value on loyalty points. We found this in the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort located just outside of Willemstad, Curaçao in the Carribiean. We would discover a wonderful resort that delivered a lot of value for Marriott Bonvoy elites.

Review: Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort, Piscadera Beach, Willemstad, Curaçao.
“An Undiscovered Gem of an Old School Marriott Resort Property that Delivered Excellent Value for Marriott Bonvoy Elites, just Like Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty program used to”
We picked the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort for a week long stay in Curaçao as it was one of the two hotels in the Caribbean that were a Marriott Bonvoy Category “5” property. The American Express Marriott Bonvoy credit cards come with an annual free night certificate that are redeemable at a Marriott Bonvoy Category 5 properties and lower. With the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort being a full beach resort, it seemed like a great opportunity to apply these certificates to offset the cost of a longer stay.
The hotel has recently undergone a complete renovation and light rebranding. The hotel was previously known as the Marriott Emerald Bay Resort and Casino. The hotel property has since dropped the Casino feature, and is now known as the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort. With this renovation, the rooms and public spaces have been completely and fully refreshed. This has included new bathrooms, fixtures, bedding and furniture throughout the property. This includes it’s food and beverage outlets and the property lounge.
Booking the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort:
The Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort offers 336 rooms and 8 suites. We stayed at the property for seven nights.
We applied three American Express Marriott Bonvoy free night certificates against the stay, with four nights remaining on a paid cash rate. Splitting up these reservations, we ended up on three back to back reservations. At times, a great hotel is sophisticated enough to keep you in the same room for the entirety of the back to back reservations. Unfortunately, this was not the case for our stay at the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort. We would get to experience three different rooms to correspond with three different stays.
Marriott Suite Night Awards:
We applied Marriott Bonvoy Suite Night Awards to our stay. There are only eight suites at the property, so there are not many suites available for upgrade. Accordingly, the Suite Night Award upgrade pool offers many soft upgraded room configurations in the Suite Night Award pool.

Having stayed at the property, I personally wouldn’t recommend using your Suite Night Awards on anything other than the “Ocean Front Suite” at this property.
While our Suite Night Awards didn’t clear, we stayed in three different rooms over the course of our stay. This included an Ocean Front Guest room, 1 King Oceanfront listed in the Suite Night Award pool inventory as listed above. In each of the rooms, the configuration was exactly the same and the only difference was the view from the room.
Getting to the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort:
John F Kennedy Boulevard, 3 Piscadera Bay, Willemstad, Curacao
After doing a little research, I decided to book a week long car rental for our time on Curaçao. This would allow us the freedom to dine off resort, and the ability to explore freestyle on our own schedule. I was happy that we had a car available during our stay. After it was all said and done, I was confident we had made the correct decision.

We travelled from the Curaçao Hato International Airport, southward into town. The Marriott was only 10 minutes away by car and it was a relatively easy drive from airport to property.
The property is located in the Pisacdera Bay neighbourhood which is a residential slope of condominiums and resorts along the beach. While it was much quieter than being in Willemstad, there wasn’t a ton of food and dining around the resort that was walkable without a having a car or taxi.
Checking Into the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort:
We arrived to the front porte cochère of the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort and unloaded the vehicle. The staff were proactive in assisting with the bags and it was kindly offered that they would park the car in the nearby hotel lot. Hotel Parking was on a complimentary basis, which was appreciated.

The lobby was a nice open air space with views towards the southern Caribbean ocean. It’s always nice to arrive to an open air resort, and this resort was particularly pandemic friendly.

During our check in, it was friendly and prompt. We were offered access to The Reef Club, which was their equivalent of a Marriott resort lounge. While it wasn’t explained at check in, there was also a $25 USD resort fee. Unlike most other properties that have a resort fee, there wasn’t a sheet that went with what this fee entailed, but it did turn up on our bill at the end of the stay.

As indicated earlier, we were on three different reservations. While we explained all of the sequencing at check in, we would end up in three different rooms throughout the course of our seven day stay.

The hotel appears to be the primary property for the KLM and TUI flight crews. It also appears to be a hotel for many of the oil and gas employees transiting to and from the off shore drilling rigs in the area. As a result, accessing the front desk for staff seemed to take some time at certain times of the day.
The property is configured in a triple “U” shaped format with four fingers of wings that run perpendicular to the ocean. Dependent on where your room is located within the “U”‘s will dictate the view type that you have. The great news is that all rooms have had a renovation right down to the studs, so all the rooms are in terrific shape.

During our stay, we were exclusively located within the central two wings closest to the Harmony Pool.
The Room: Partial Ocean View, 1 King, Balcony
For our first room, we were escorted up to Room #431. On arrival to the room, our host explained the features of the room. This included mostly pointing out the obvious; the location of the coffee maker, where the refrigerator and in room safe were.
The room decor was set up in beachy tones, with light colours and oceanic blues along the accent wall.

The room featured a small occasional chair with an ottoman. It was of the smaller variety and certainly compact in the footprint.

The room offered a flat screen television, that was a large 55 inch version. The television content consisted mostly of international news broadcasts, with the occasional South American Spanish content.

The bathroom had a full renovation and offered a single vanity sink. There were also some purpose built wall units which were well designed to set up as storage.

Although a small thing, having a room set up with all this shelving really made stays more convenient and organized. The ability to switch between beach wear to casual evening wear was a lot easier with all this shelving.

The toiletries were a combination of the usual Marriott “thisworks” and “The Spa Collection”

The room also featured a Nepresso coffee maker.

There was also a well designed chest refrigerator, along with an in room safe in the cabinets.

The partial ocean view offered a small balcony off the bedroom area. The partial ocean view offered a peek – a – boo view up the finger of the “U” towards the ocean. The views wasn’t all so bad, and overlooked the adult pool.

The floor plan of our “U” finger consisted of 5 rooms on each side of the hallway, leaving towards the angled oceanfront rooms on the far right of the picture.

The Room: Ocean Front, Guest room, 1 King, Oceanfront, Balcony
For our second room, we switched over to free certificates from MrsWT73’s American Express Marriott Bonvoy credit card. The room occupancy must have been softer as we received a nice Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite upgrade to an Ocean Front Room.
The Oceanfront Guest Room – 1 King was a room that was originally in the hotels’ Marriott Bonvoy Suite Night Award program, although it was not a suite.

The room was exactly the same configuration as the Partial Ocean View. However, in this case, the room offered a full ocean view.

While an ocean view is always appreciated, the room was pretty much the same as or original room. The room design also had a smaller deck area, and as a result, we didn’t spend as much time out on the deck as we could have (assuming it was larger).

The view offered a peek a boo view to the sunset.

The Room: An Ocean View
Our last room and our longest stay room was in the same bank of rooms as the Partial Ocean View.
I didn’t actually consider this to be much of an upgrade, since the room was only 2 rooms closer to the water than our “Partial Ocean View” from the first night’s stay.

All of the rooms were quiet, and we had a really good sleep in each room location. There was no immediate advantage for one room over another, and assuming you book a water view, you’ll likely be satisfied with your room as you’ll end up with some form of an ocean view.
Around the Property:
The “Harmony” Resort Pool:
The property’ focal point was the outdoor pool. This was called the Harmony Pool, which can be interpreted as a family pool. It was located just a few steps down from the lobby, the outdoor pool spread across the hotel resort in an “X” pattern as the resort fell towards the ocean.

The hotel offers two large swimming pools. The family pool is the primary water feature for the resort.

The Serenity Adult Pool:
The resort also featured an adult swimming pool which was branded as a Serenity Pool. During our visit, the adult swimming pool was set up with length lanes. It was pretty full of European’s swimming lengths during the day and was not a lounging area by any means.

The second pool is branded as an adult pool. During our visit, it was set up for length swimming with dividers. We never actually used this pool since length swimming isn’t an activity that I go out of my way to seek when I’m on holiday.

The Resort Beach:
The Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort offers a small beach on the property that runs the frontage of the property along the south coast of Curaçao. I would rate the hotel beach as good to very good – with it being closer to very good as far as hotel beach properties go. The sand on the beach itself is very fine and granular. It is also maintained by maintained by the hotel and swept of any debris.

The resort beach offered lounge chairs spread about the property. They were typically available without having to save them at all times during the day. There wasn’t a need to run down at 10 AM to block seats, which made for a relaxing holiday.

I would note that the hotel beach itself is nothing in comparison to the spectacular beaches that you can see around Curaçao at Klien Curaçao, Grote Klip or Cas Abao. I would probably say that if you’re staying at the property, you would be re-miss not to visit these locations if you’re looking for a world class beach experience.

The beach has a stone break along the water way which breaks the surf a little bit. The beach itself is not a long beach and is property specific. There won’t be any seven mile walks along the shoreline here. In terms of a hotel resort with a dedicated beach, this property will likely meet your needs.
Sunset at Piscadera Bay:
The resort offers a pretty good sunset from within the resort grounds. While the sunset doesn’t have a feature to it, other than the beauty of the water, it’s a pretty nice sunset from the resort grounds.
You won’t ever mistake this resort for the Maldives, or the wonders and fame of Waikiki Beach in Honolulu Hawaii, but it’s not a bad place to be for a week.
Marriott Piscadera Beach House Reef:
The Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort offers a house reef for snorkeling at Marriott Piscadera Beach. During our stay, the waters were much calmer in the morning before 10 AM. The waters tended to get more wavy in the mid day to afternoon periods, before getting to be more calm in the late evening.
The house reef at the Marriott Piscadera Beach offered a reef inside the protected walls and outside of the wave break. While there wasn’t a whole lot of fish, I was able to see some Angel Tangs. There were also a surprising amount of well developed Brain Corals along with good visibility.
It was nothing like the Maldives or Hawaii, but it was nice to at least have a “walk to” option.
Hotel Gym:
The Curacao Marriott Beach Resort also offered a spacious resort gym. The gym itself had bright windows and it was nice not have the gym set up in a dungeon type space. It was mostly empty throughout our stay here.
Food and Beverage:
Zala Gastro Lounge
The first night of our stay, we had dinner at the hotel lobby bar restaurant known as the Zala Gastro Lounge. We would end up eating here at least four nights out of a seven night stay; mostly as a matter of convenience.

We were both starved from two days of travel and light “charcuterie plate” plane food. We both ended up ordering a giant Marriott Burger and fries. Surprisingly, it was an excellent burger. It was well seasoned and spiced and cooked just at medium. It was very tasty.
Izakaya Sushi Bar:
The resort also offered sushi from their Japanese Restaurant; the Izakaya Sushi Bar. The restaurant was not a separate location but rather a single page menu in the Zala Gastro Lounge book located within the lounge. We did enjoy the sushi one night for a lighter dinner with Maki Rolls pricing at $16 USD.

There were a few stray cats around the resort and dining areas that MrsWT73 had the pleasure of feeding.

Salty Iguana:
The resort also ran a beachside restaurant called Salty Iguana. The Salty Iguana restaurant serviced the beach side and pool guests for the day.

Although it was scheduled to be open for dinner, it was actually closed most nights during our stay. While it was open for happy hour, we typically ended up in the Reef Club Marriott Executive Lounge for drinks instead. As a result, we never got the opportunity to dine at this particular place.

C-Spice Restaurant
Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Breakfast
The C-Spice restaurant is the all day dining restaurant at the resort. In the morning, it is the restaurant that offers breakfast. In the evening, it is the restaurant that offered their upscale dining experience.
During part of our stay, we used the Marriott Bonvoy Platinum / Titanium breakfast benefit. We weren’t given breakfast coupons like many other Marriott Bonvoy hotels, and we were just told to see the front desk to have the items fully deducted after the fact (on check out).
At the restaurant, we were given a menu and indicated we could order any a – la – carte items off the menu, including the buffet. The breakfast menu was interesting an had a number of items on the menu, although not so many that you could have something different every day of a week long stay.

In addition to a – la – carte ordering, the hotel offered a full buffet available for guests. The buffet was not part of the Marriott Platinum breakfast benefit, but I took a look around. The buffet was of the standard variety, featuring many stations.

Our a – la – carte orders typically took about 30 minutes to arrive. The service was polite and professional by all and we enjoyed chatting with the staff whom were all pleasant.
I had the smoked salmon eggs Benedict with hollandaise and capers. It didn’t arrive with any sides, which later discovered that I should have ordered separately. Unfortunately, the eggs Benedict arrived at room temperature. I didn’t bother to send it back, given we had already waited 30 minutes.

MrsWT73 had the egg white frittata with assorted veggies and goat cheese. She reported high marks for this dish.

On other days, I ordered the avocado toast with drizzled honey.

On another day, I ordered the American Breakfast. This also arrived a little cool and not exactly cooked to order. Eggs that were ordered soft would arrive fully cooked and rock hard. After waiting for breakfast for 30 minutes, I typically wouldn’t send anything back.

The best part about the breakfasts at C-Spice was the fact that it was included a part of a Marriott Bonvoy Elite benefit. We were also able to sit outside and enjoy good weather dining al fresco while listening to the bird chirping in the morning. I can’t emphasize enough how much the option to have a full breakfast is appreciated for Marriott Bonvoy elites; it was really appreciated.
The primary disadvantage to the food and beverage at the Marriott resort is that there is not a lot of food and beverage that is nearby the resort. We had access to a rental car during our stay. Having said that, we only ventured off the resort three times as a matter of convenience and as a result of timings. Many off site restaurants involve a 5 minute trip into town along with a substantial walk from Willemstad car park to restaurant. This is something that you might not feel up to after a full day’s worth of activities off the resort.
The Reef Club:
Marriott Executive Lounge
The hotel operates a Reef Club which is very similar to a Marriott Executive lounge that accompanies club level rooms. The lounge is not marketed as a Marriott Executive Lounge, but it fulfils almost the exact same role. The usual “up charge” for The Reef Club was $75 USD a night, assuming you did not purchase it as a part of your room rate.
The Reef Club offered the following amenities:
- Daily Access from 7 AM to 7 PM
- Breakfast Buffet from 7 AM to 11 AM
- Assortment of Snacks from 12 PM – 3 PM
- Wine and Beer with small snacks Daily from 12 PM – 3 PM
- Hard Liquor from 5 PM – 7 PM with small snacks
- Along with a fully stocked cooler with water, assortment of juices, soft drinks and beer
- Coffee and tea.
We were provided access to The Reef Club on a complimentary basis as a result of Marriott Bonvoy Titanium status. We were also advised that we could have breakfast in the club and also take the 1,000 points as a welcome amenity.

Reef Club Breakfast:
We did enjoy breakfast in the Reef Club Lounge on our first day. The breakfast in the lounge offered both a continental option and a hot option. The continental option included individually packed cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, pastries and European croissants. The hot option included mini pancakes, the usual scrambled eggs and consisting of the usual light accompaniments.

Reef Club Evening Snacks:
The Reef Club offered some light evening snacks and an open bar. The open bar was between 5 – 7 PM. I was really surprised to see some higher end spirits including Grey Goose Vodka, Hendricks Gin and Bombay Sapphire East available at the Open Bar. There was also the opportunity to try the Blue Curaçao Liquor and Curaçao Orange Triple Sec.

The lounge offered indoor seating, in addition to a nice outdoor deck. While the deck had some poolside views, it did not have a view of the sunset. There were also to – go cups available in the lounge. We often took a drink down to the beach pool chairs for sunset on days we were at the resort.

I was really happy with the inclusions offered at this particular resort. The ability to access the lounge and a complimentary breakfast added a ton of value for Marriott Bonvoy Elite members that we haven’t seen through many places in the program within recent years.
In closing comments on our stay overall, I did have to follow up with Marriott Bonvoy customer service to get both elite night credits and Marriott Bonvoy point postings for all three of the stays covering the seven day period. While we received a bill for the second and third reservation and stays, the hotel wouldn’t provide a receipt for our first free certificate stay.
The Bottom Line: The Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort
Overall, I was really happy with our stay at this particular property. While we didn’t get a fabulous elite upgrade, or have outstanding food and beverage at the hotels’ restaurants, we really enjoyed the inclusion of the Reef Club’s food and beverage program. We also really found a lot of value in redeeming our Marriott Bonvoy Free Night Certificates at this property as it represented an excellent value. The beach was pleasant and the staff were generally pleasant to deal with.
What Marriott Bonvoy Property have you discovered in the Carribiean that was exceptionally good value ?
American Airlines has the leading market share on flights to the Caribbean from it’s hub in Miami International Airport in the United States. Being located on in the Pacific Northwest, it’s an area that had escaped our travels. We would test out American Airlines Business Class service from Miami to Curaçao in the Southern Caribbean on their Boeing 737 Max 8 product today.
This post is one chapter on our trip during the pandemic to Curaçao in the Southern Caribbean. This trip was enhanced through Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status and Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. Review: American Airlines Business Class B737 – Max8, Miami International Airport – Curaçao Hato International Airport
This flight was the continuation of our journey to Curaçao. We had flown through Dallas Fort Worth on American Airlines Business Class Vancouver – Dallas Fort Worth, American Airlines First Class Dallas – Miami, and were later continuing onwards on American Airlines Business Class Miami – Curaçao (this review).
We departed the American Airlines Admirals Lounge Miami Gate D30 and headed down to Gate D31. The gate area was almost immediately underneath the Admirals Club and was pretty quiet.

We were among the first on board today with no Concierge Key members or members of active military.
American Airlines
AA 2739 – Business Class
MIA – CUR (Miami International Airport – Hato International Airport)
March 29, 2022
12:10 PM – 3:07 PM
Booked: Boeing 737 Max 8
Flown: Boeing 737 Max 8
On Board American Airlines Business Class:
On board the American Airlines Boeing 737 – Max 8 aircraft, the forward section is set up in a 2 – 2 configuration with 4 rows of forward cabin “goodness”.

American Airlines First / Business Class features a slimline seat which is pretty comfortable for regional travel. The seat is remarkably consistent with the other configurations that we had flown on the way down to this point (Boeing 737-8, Airbus 321).

The load today was 13 out of 16 in business class, which made for a full but not cramped cabin.

The seats offer in seat power and a convenient laptop storage area in the arm rest.

The seat itself is a little roomier than the dated product on the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 and is much more functional as a result of it’s available storage spaces.
Pre Departure Services:
Breaking with our earlier tradition on our past American Airlines flights to date, we were offered an open bar pre-departure beverage. I had a craving for a tequila and orange juice.
Unfortunately, there was no tequila on board, I ended up having a vodka and orange juice. MrsWT73 had a sparkling wine of some unbranded variety. The drinks were served in a hot coffee wax paper cup.

Departing Miami International Airport:
We had a sunny departure from Miami International Airport. We taxied past several American Airlines Boeing 787-8’s as we headed to the take off position.

We had a gorgeous departure out of Miami with great views of the green and blue seas of this particular region of the world.

I had forgotten how beautiful the waters were around Miami, Florida. We were treated to over the wing views as we departed over the Atlantic Ocean. The emerald blue water views were similar to what we had experienced on our helicopter flights over the great barrier reef.

The views were truly a great way to start any flight.
The Meal: A Light Lunch.
With a flight time of just over three hours, we had a lunch service on this flight. The meal service started off with a beverage and mixed nut service. I stuck with water for this particular section, while MrsWT73 had a club soda and vodka which was served over ice.

The meal choices for today were a pretzel sandwich with hummus, spinach or a charcuterie plate. With us being seated in row 3, they were already out of the sandwich by the time they got to us, so we were “stuck” with the charcuterie plate with apologies as they only loaded “5” sandwiches.
The lunch service was served plated all at one, with a broccoli cranberry salad and small piece of cake.

Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a low rent touch to run out of a meal choice. Making matters worse is that the pre-order meal function has not been activated as a result of pandemic modifications to service on board. As a result, I would really recommend sitting in the first two rows off first / business class if getting your preferred choice of meal is important to you.
The service was pretty absent on this particular flight with most of the crew disappearing for most of the remainder of the flight. We did have a bottled water service of Nestlé water dropped off after the meal service had finished.

There wasn’t much to do other than stare out the window after the flight. We passed over rural and deserted Cuba during our trip.

In Flight Entertainment:
The “in flight entertainment” was offered through the American Airlines wifi. There was a substantial amount of movies available on the flight. As there were no seat back monitors, you had to bring your own device with you.

While there were no i-Pad’s passed out like Alaska Airlines, I was able to access the entertainment through the American Airlines in flight wifi and app.

Arriving into Curaçao:
After several hours of light, we started the descent into Curaçao. It was a little cloudy on our descent, but we got our first glances of the island. The island is almost completley surrounded by an island ing of emerald blue waters and coves.

We arrived into Curaçao immediately adjacent to a KLM Boeing 777 who was arriving at the same time. The immigration hall was full of Dutch travellers as our Passenger Locator Cards were verified and our Immigration landing cards were also checked. We proceeded onto immigration where I was stamped into country number 73 for me.

We went over to Hertz where we had an old fashioned process in signing out a car for the week. We would self drive over to the Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort hotel for a week’s stay.

My Thoughts on American Airlines Business Class to the Caribbean:
The American Airlines Business Class product on its flights to the southern Caribbean marked a more comfortable way to travel. It didn’t offer the full luxuries of international wide body aircraft but it sure made for travel at a more comfortable level than in economy class. While we received a meal, we got off the plane pretty hungry and I’d recommend seating in the front of the cabin if you hope on getting an actual meal.
If you travel on American Airlines, is the catering on board enough to sustain you on travels to the Caribbean ?
American Airlines operates out of several hubs across the United States that include Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas Fort Worth in the United States of America. As American Airlines operates in the One World airline alliance, it is a major competitor to United Airlines who operates in the Star Alliance airline alliance. We would get the opportunity to explore their American Airlines Admirals Club at their Miami International Airport – Terminal D, prior to our early afternoon departure to the Caribbean.

Review: American Airlines Admirals Club Lounge – North Terminal Concourse D Terminal Gate D30, Miami International Airport, Florida, United States of America
We arrived to Miami on an American Airlines First Class Dallas Fort Worth – Miami flight. After a great visit to The Centurion Lounge Miami, we wandered over to the American Airlines Admirals Club near Gate D30.
There are two American Airlines Admirals Clubs at the Miami International Airport. There is the Admirals Club at Gate D15. Our visit today was to the American Airlines Admirals Club at Gate D30 in the D Concourse North Terminal at Miami International Airport.
The Admirals Club at Gate D30 has a shared reception for the American Airlines Flagship Lounge, which is also co-located at this space.
Locating the American Airlines Admirals Club:
The lounge is easily located in the Miami International Airport North Terminal, D Concourse near Gate D30. The lounge was centrally located and conveniently located near the intersection of many directions at Miami International Airport.

We easily found our way to the lounge, using well marked overhead signs that pointed our way towards the Admirals Club and the Flagship Lounge.

Eventually, we made it to lobby reception and the entrance on the left hand of the concourse.

On arriving to the American Airlines Admirals Club, we were processed at reception which was located on the ground floor.

Accessing the American Airlines Admirals Club:
Thanks to complex lounge access rules in the United States where memberships are offered, it’s a little more challenging than most countries to access American Airlines Admirals Club Lounge. American Airlines also offers among the more restrictive access between the three airline alliances of One World, Star Alliance and Skyteam.

Access to the Admirals Club is permitted under the following circumstances:
The most likely way into the American Airlines Admirals Club is through a qualifying First or Business Class flight to an international destination. The qualifying destinations include:
Flights between the U.S. and:
- Asia
- Australia
- Canada (not always found on the eligibility list)
- Caribbean (not always found on the eligibility list)
- Central America
- Europe
- Mexico
- New Zealand
- South America
Access can be granted through select international itineraries. While Caribbean access is not normally on the list of international itineraries, we were able to gain access through Caribbean flights “for a limited time”. Normally, American Airlines considers international flights of the longer haul variety which include Southern South America, Europe, or Asia. Flights to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Northern South America are not always included.
If you’re in International First Class, you are entitled to bring one guest under this category.
You can also get in with Qualifying transcontinental flights as flights with seats ticketed as Flagship®, including flights from Los Angeles to:
- New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX)
- JFK and San Francisco (SFO)
- JFK and Orange County (SNA)
- LAX and Miami (MIA)
Qualifying AAdvantage® Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro and Platinum, and qualifying One World Emerald and Sapphire level members to the above international destinations are also permitted access.
Admirals Club® members, including annual and lifetime members, Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® primary cardholders, ConciergeKeySM members and AirPassSM members with Admirals Club privileges. If you have a paid annual membership, this allows you access to:
- Domestic and international Admirals Club locations
- All Alaska Airlines Lounges (when departing on flights marketed and operated by American or Alaska Airlines)
- All Qantas Clubs (when departing on same-day flights operated by Qantas, or operated by American out of Auckland, New Zealand or Sydney, Australia)
- Select partner lounges operated by third parties (on same-day flights operated by American)
You can also purchase a day pass for a visit in advance or at the counter for $59 USD. The day passes sales are based on lounge capacity constraints.
In short, there are many ways to get in, if one can figure out the assortment of complicated access rules. Our access today was courtesy of the International Business Class ticket status of our American Airlines ticket.
Our boarding cards were checked on the concourse level. After we had passed the reception, we were invited up the stairs or the elevators to the Admirals Lounge on the left of the stairs.

There is a grand looking white staircase in the reception area which made a nice statement, but I didn’t actually see anyone using it. It had an institutional look to it, versus a grand elegant appearance. We took the elevator up one level to the top floor to the lounge level.
Inside the American Airlines Admirals Club:
At the top of the stairs, the American Airlines Flagship Lounge was on the right and guarded by two reception attendants. We proceeded over to the Left for the Admirals Club Lounge.

Wandering into the reception area of the American Airlines Admirals Club, we wandered past the first small reception seating area that consisted of approximately a dozen chairs.

There was also a magazine rack area, which featured the Destination magazine. The Destination magazine featured mostly real estate of Caribbean markets.

I’ll hand it to American Airlines for imagining a better use of the reception space. Most lounge entries feature less than exciting corridor space that doesn’t offer any seating. Here, they’ve actually used the space to invite passengers into the lounge.

Lounge Seating:
Inside the lounge proper, there was one large space portioned into four zones. Two zones by the windows featured lounge seating space. The lounge seating itself was pretty institutional and functional in nature. While it offered a bright space to sit, the space was pretty austere and functional in nature. Bright seating surfaces made the place look somewhat lively. Overall, the place had a feel of an office cafeteria.

Stretching around the space, the lounge offered different seating compartments. Dependent on position, the views were of the airport apron, or through the rotunda to the airport concourse one level below.

The lounge offered some tinted views of American Airlines aircraft on the apron below. This made for a different view than my usual Star Alliance routes of the competing one world aircraft.

Working your way through the lounge, there was lounge seating that also offered views into the rotunda overlooking the concourse walkway below.

Eventually making your way back to the main lounge area, consistent with a major city lounge in a hub airport, the spaces were pretty busy.

Dining Area:
There was also a small dining zone which was located in the central portion of the lounge. The dining area featured high top counter space.

There was a small bar area that offered the opportunity to get a mixed or well drink. It featured televisions which are very common in lounges in the United States.

In summary, the lounge offered a large amount of compartmentalized places to sit, and was designed in a manner that offered more smaller seating areas, instead of one large area.
Food and Beverage:
The Admirals Club did not feature a whole lot of complimentary food between meal times. It appeared that some of the main food serving hours were limited to set meal times. As we were departing, the lunch food was being put out. During our stay, there were some light snacks offered.

There wasn’t a whole lot of snacks offered. The amount of food available was a “take it or leave it” type of scenario.

While the bar wasn’t open during our visit, American Airlines Admirals Club offered scan by table menus for drink offerings. They offered some simple table wine along with Miller Lite and Heinkein as the house beers. Many of the other beverages were at charge.

They also offered a number of plated menu items during meal periods that ranged from $12 to $16 USD a plate.

We had a brief stop before our American Airlines Business Class Miami – Curaçao flight. Despite the lounge being a reasonable place for a hub lounge, I preferred the food and wine set up at The Centurion Lounge Miami much more than this particular Admirals Club location.
My Thoughts on the American Airlines Admirals Club Miami :
While the American Airlines Admirals Club is a reasonable offering for an American Airlines Hub Lounge, it’s a pretty institutional place without much flair or personality to it. The Admirals Club offered a quick stop for us prior to our Caribbean flight. We would end up staying just long enough, prior to heading off.
If you travel through Miami International Airport, do you visit the American Airlines Admirals Club ?
American Express has operated The Centurion Lounge across many locations throughout the United States. The Miami location of The Centurion Lounge is one of their newer locations. It occupies a bright space above the D Concourse at Miami International Airport. We would get the opportunity to visit the lounge on our connection through Miami today.

Review: American Express – The Centurion Lounge, Miami International Airport – Concourse D, Florida, United States of America
The Centurion Lounge by American Express Miami is one of the system’s newer lounge offerings. While it has been a while since I’ve passed through Miami International Airport, I’d get the opportunity to pass through The Centurion Lounge Miami.
Locating The Centurion Lounge Miami:
After arriving off of American Airlines First Class Dallas Fort Worth – Miami, we arrived into Miami International Airport at Gate D42.
We had a long walk down the D Concourse to Gate D10, where the American Express Centurion Lounge Miami was located. The Centurion Lounge Miami isn’t exactly conveniently located, with a location that is right at one end of the airport terminal hall.

While there was an available tram, I under estimated the amount of time it too to walk all the way down thirty gates through the Miami International Airport and it was about solid fifteen minutes of walking.

The lounge was reasonably well marked through over head signs. The signs confirmed the direction, but not the amount of time it would take to get there.

We eventually made it to The Centurion Lounge elevators. The Centurion Lounge elevators are prominently displayed in the atrium at Gate D12. It was a short ride up to get to the upper level where we could get checked in.

On arrival to the lounge area, we travelled up the elevator two levels (only one level on the elevator) to arrive to the compact lounge reception for the American Express Lounge Miami:

The Centurion Lounge reception was located immediately off the elevator bank. We would arrive to the familiar American Express Green Wall which is featured in all of it’s Centurion Lounges.

Accessing The Centurion Lounge:
Access to this lounge is granted through an American Express Platinum Card, or a American Express Centurion Card. Currently, American Express Platinum Card members can bring in two guests at no charge.
After February 1, 2023, US Platinum Card Members will be charged a $50 USD fee for each guest (or $30 for children aged 2 through 17, with proof of age). U.S. Platinum Card® and U.S. Business Platinum Card® Members will qualify for Complimentary Guest Access for up to two guests per visit after spending $75,000 in eligible purchases on their Card between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022 and in each calendar year thereafter.
The Centurion Lounge is considered a day of departure lounge. American Express does not admit arriving passengers, unless there is a layover or connecting flight.
Note: For Platinum and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Card Members only.
The Centurion® Lounge is a day of departure lounge, which accommodates departing flights and arrivals when having connecting flights. Same-day round-trip itineraries are not considered connecting flights.
The Centurion Lounge provides admittance within 3 hours of the departure time stated on your same-day, confirmed boarding pass; or if your outbound flight departs after the lounge closes for the day, The Centurion Lounge will admit you as early as 3 hours prior to the lounge closing, subject to available capacity.
There was no wait for lounge access today. In addition, there was no queue at reception which some times occurs in other locations.
We were admitted after showing our American Express Platinum Card and our onward boarding card for our next flight.
Inside the American Express Centurion Lounge:
The American Express Centurion Lounge is decorated much like all the other American Express Centurion Lounges. I have to give American Express an award for consistency, their lounge offering is very similar whether it is in Las Vegas, Dallas or Miami.
The lounge is decorated in a contemporary modern style. The lounge offered seating around the glass windows of the lounge. The seating stretched across the length of the space. It was pretty busy when we arrived, with some challenges locating a seat.

While there wasn’t a lot of lounge seating, we were able to grab a pair of seats based on the departure of another set of travellers. At times, the American Express Lounges are a victim of their own success, making finding seating in the lounge a challenge at times.

At one far end of the lounge, there were additional seats after a wine bar. This zone had a tables and chair combination, with the balance of the lounge offering high density lounge seating.

Unlike it’s the American Express Centurion Lounge Houston, the Miami lounge offered great airside view from a commanding fourth floor view. Most of the planes parked at this end of the terminal were American Airlines narrow body planes.

It’s always better to have a view from the lounge and the sunny skies of Miami set for a great backdrop during our time here.
Food and Beverage:
Toward the other end of the lounge space, there was the usual American Express Bar. The Centurion Lounge bar was a full service variety that is always well staffed and attended. There is never usually a wait at the bar.
The bar offered wine before the hours of 11 AM. As always, The Centurion Lounge Miami offered an excellent beverage program and cocktail list.

The wines on offer were reasonable and there was enough there to keep you interested.
The food section at The Centurion Lounge Miami occupied a small space just off the bar area. It often got quite busy at the food service station.

There were an assortment of hot and cold foods available at the lounge with enough variety during the breakfast hour to substitute for a meal.

While we didn’t enjoy much of the food that was out for offer, there was a full breakfast available which included eggs, fresh fruit, Greek yoghurt and granola.
We would end up spending time here before heading over to the American Airlines Admirals Club D30 Miami and onwards to our American Airlines Business Class Miami – Curaçao flight.
My Thoughts on the Centurion Lounge Miami by American Express:
American Express Centurion Lounges offer a consistent product across much of their lounge network. The Miami International Airport location offers terrific airside views, along with a decent food and beverage program that will keep most travellers fed, content and satisfied. The only drawbacks of this particular lounge are it’s slightly inconvenient location located at a remote end of the Miami D Terminal, and the fact that it tends to get a little busy at this location making it sometimes hard to find a place to sit.
If you travel through Miami International Airport, is The Centurion Lounge on your regular visit list ?
American Airlines operates up to ten non stop flights daily between it’s southern hubs at Dallas Fort Worth and Miami. Those that are hunting for the best aircraft can possibily find a flight on their Boeing 787-8 product, most of their flights are on narrow body Airbus 321 or Boeing 737 series aircraft. We would test out their American Airlines Airbus 321 offering on this popular route today.

Review: American Airlines First Class A321, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport – Miami International Airport
This flight was the continuation of our journey to Curaçao. We had arrived into Dallas Fort Worth on American Airlines Business Class Vancouver – Dallas Fort Worth and were later continuing onwards on American Airlines Business Class Miami – Curaçao.
We left the American Airlines Admirals Club Lounge Dallas Fort Worth – Terminal C, and wandered immediately across the concourse to Gate C20 at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

American Airlines
AA 1042 – First Class
DFW – MIA (Dallas Fort Worth International Airport – Miami International Airport)
March 29, 2022
5:18 AM – 8:57 AM
Booked: Airbus 321
Flown: Airbus 321
On Board American Airlines First Class:
We boarded with Group 1 and settled into American Airlines First Class on their Airbus 321 product.

The American Airlines Airbus 321 is set up in a 2 – 2 configuration in First Class with five rows occupying the front of the cabin. The American Airlines First Class cabin features a total of twenty seats.

The cabin is set in a pleasing grey tone, which is easy on the eyes. The sleek look is very professional looking and will likely wear well over the years.

There is a reasonable amount of leg room space in the seat while seated and are fairly roomy for First Class. They offered more seat room than my last Alaska Airlines First Class flights.

The American Airlines Airbus 321 seats are similar to the First Class seats found on the American Airlines First Class Boeing 737 product. The seats on the Airbus 321 offered seat recline through a lever in the centre console.

Similar to our earlier flight, there was no seat back monitor in the seat ahead. Instead, there was a location for device storage which was through a fold out cradle in the seat pocket in front of you.

The seats on the American Airlines Airbus 321 also featured air nozzles above your seat. This was a comfortable way to travel, as you had the opportunity to adjust your seat climate.

The seats offer in seat power and a convenient laptop storage area in the arm rest. The storage space on the Airbus 321 is much more compact than on the comparable Boeing 737. I was just able to fit a 13 inch MacBook Pro in the space on the Airbus 321. If the laptop was any larger, it wouldn’t have fit.

Pre Departure Services:
A Pre-Departure Beverage was offered for this early morning flight. I ended up with orange juice. It was served in a plastic cup, which is a slightly low rent touch, but pretty common for beverages that need to be taken away fairly promptly.

We were also presented with a small towel service. This is something that’s always appreciated, even if the towel isn’t of high quality that you’d expect in a spa. These towels were a little limp and similar to what you might expect at a discount motel like Motel “6”.

Captain Dudley made a public address announcement of the continued Center for Disease Control (CDC) mask mandate and also provided some general flight information. He announced a 2 hour and 10 minute flight time with a planned cruise altitude of 35,000 feet.
We had an on time departure and departed DFW on Runway 18L over a dark Dallas Fort Worth.
The Meal: A Light Breakfast.
The meal service on this shorter flight was a choice between a charctuterie plate or a fruit plate with overnight oats (oatmeal). They had run out of the oatmeal by the time they had gotten to Row 4.
Fortunately, the charcuterie plate was the better choice. American Airlines had not returned the pre-ordering of meals after the pandemic so we were left with whatever was left by the time they arrived to our row.
I started off the meal service with a serving of Ice Water, which was served in a proper glass.

I was then served the Charcuterie Plate, with Sliced Fruit and the Ice Water

The Charcuterie Plate was pretty tasty, and a refreshing alternative to many of the tougher doughy breakfast items we’d usually come to expect on a North American Carrier during the breakfast hour.

Sometime during this flight, I crossed my one millionth mile flown. It is certainly a bittersweet milestone that I may have anticipated being ensconced in some fabulous business class pod. Instead, I was flying on a short haul narrow body in domestic first class. I wrote a separate post on my thoughts on that and how travel isn’t always as glamorous as we might think.
Arriving into Miami, Florida:
As our flight drew to a close, we had some picturesque views arriving into Miami International Airport. Our flight path took us in on a westward approach, which had us having beautiful skyline views along downtown Miami.

We arrived into Miami International Airport and headed off to kill off our layover at the American Express Centurion Lounge Miami.

We would later continuing on with our connecting flight on American Airlines Business Class Miami – Curaçao.
My Thoughts on American Airlines Short Haul First Class:
The American Airlines First Class product on its short two hour flight between it’s two southern United States hubs of Dallas and Miami in the United States was surprisingly well equipped for such a short flight. We were treated to a lounge that was open at the crack of dawn, a towel service, and a light snack plate all set against a new aircraft interior cabin. The product was better than I expected and I also celebrated that special one million mile segment as I landed in Miami.
