Occasionally, there comes a terrific opportunity to stack points and miles offers to really enhance your mileage account. During Amazon’s Prime Day sales event, we are seeing a really solid offer for Air Canada Aeroplan Point earning, with certain terms and conditions and provided that you have the correct credit card.
Deal Alert: Air Canada Aeroplan E-Store Offering 12X points for Amazon Prime Purchases.
In an exclusive offer to Toronto Dominion Air Canada Aeroplan Visa card holders, Air Canada Aeroplan is offering up to 12 x the points for select Amazon Prime Purchases made through the Air Canada Aeroplan E Store web portal.
What is Amazon Prime:
If you haven’t heard of Amazon Prime by now, you probably haven’t been taking advantage of a lot of on line shopping in the last eight years. Per the Amazon’s website, Prime Day is Amazon’s deal event exclusively for Prime members, featuring personalized deals and top brands. The event came to life for customers on July 15, 2015, as a way to celebrate Prime members on Amazon’s 20th birthday.
The Deal:
This appears to be a targeted offer to Toronto Dominion Aeroplan Visa Card Holders.
Toronto Dominion Aeroplan Visa Card Holders are being offered up to 12x the regular Air Canada Aeroplan points for Amazon Prime Purchases. I might also add that I received an additional 2 points per dollar offer, as a result of also being and Air Canada Elite 35K member.
The basics of the deal are as follows:
Amazon Prime Day is back for two days only, July 11‑12.
- Earn 7 pts/$1 spent on eligible Amazon category purchases via the Aeroplan eStore.
- That’s 5 pts/$1 spent during the event, plus 2 extra pts/$1 just for being a Status Member!
Plus, TD Aeroplan Cardholders receive an exclusive additional points bonus.
- Earn an extra 5pts/$1 spent when you use your TD Aeroplan card for your purchases.
- That’s a total of 12 pts/$1 spent!
It’s worth mentioning that MrsWT73 whom is also a primary Toronto Dominion Aeroplan Visa Card holder (and who is also an Amazon Prime Member), did not get targeted for this offer.
The usual Aeroplan E – Store Earn rate is 1x per point (plus 2 additional points as a status member) for 3x per dollar. Earning 12 points per dollar spent is a pretty generous offer, assuming that you can meet the terms and conditions.

As always, there are a number of terms and conditions that are in place with any Air Canada Aeroplan promotion. Probably the most limiting of the terms and conditions, are the purchasing categories that are able to earn under this particular promotion.
These categories include:
- Amazon Cloud Cam
- Amazon Fashion Private Brands
- Automotive
- Beauty & Grooming
- Camera
- Photo & Video
- Clothing & Accessories
- Echo Devices
- Eero Devices
- Fire Tablets
- Fire TV Devices
- Furniture
- Handmade Products
- Home Improvement
- Industrial & Scientific
- Jewelry
- Kindle E-readers
- Luggage & Bags
- Luxury Beauty
- Major Appliances
- Musical Instruments
- Stage & Studio
- Office & School Supplies
- Pet Supplies
- Power & Hand Tools
- Ring Video Doorbells and Cameras
- Shoes & Handbags
- Sports & Outdoors
- Tires & Wheels
- Watches
The purchase of Amazon Prime Memberships are not eligible for the accumulation of Aeroplan points.
In order to fulfil the second portion of the offer, you need to first sign into the Aeroplan E-Store and complete the purchases on your TD Aeroplan Credit Card.
These terms include:
- Offer starts at midnight (12:00:01 AM) EST on July 11, 2023
- Offer ends at midnight (11:59:00 PM) EST on July 12, 2023
- During the Offer Period, the primary cardholder of a TD Aeroplan credit card account will earn an additional 5 Aeroplan Points for every Aeroplan Point earned on qualifying Amazon purchases initiated through the Air Canada Aeroplan Estore and charged to the account.
- Earnings exclude taxes, shipping fees, custom duties, or any other types of surcharges.
- No Aeroplan Points will be awarded for transactions that initiate directly with Amazon, without going through the E-Store.
- Authorized User’s Spend are Not Eligible for this Offer
- Aeroplan Points will be credited by September 6, 2023.

When signing into the Aeroplan E-Store during this promotion, my screen does accurately display the 7x per point offer, with the additional TD Aeroplan Visa Card 5x points coming later.

What I think of this deal:
This offer requires that the purchaser meet a number of conditions. It’s not that unusual for an Aeroplan promotion to have this many promotions, although the strict purchase categories won’t be up to everyone’s tastes.
Assuming you meet the requirements for the promotion, then this has the potential to be an excellent deal. I suppose if you were needing to purchase a major appliance in the next two days, then you might be able to earn 12x points per dollar on a two thousand dollar refrigerator. In that case, you’d earn 24,000 Aeroplan points.
For most of the rest of us, depending on your on line shopping habits, you’ll likely earn a few hundred extra Aeroplan miles on this offer.
Mainly, this type of promotion is designed to drive traffic from the Aeroplan E-Store to the Aeroplan website. Along these lines, this is a perfect promotion. The offer also provides some of the reasons why I keep the Toronto Dominion Aeroplan Visa card, as occasionally, you’ll get a solid promotion like this.
The Bottom Line: Aeroplan Points are Up for Grabs on Amazon Prime Day
There are a number of points available for qualifying purchases on Amazon Prime Day. Assuming that you can meet the categories, sign into the Aeroplan E Store, and make the purchase on a Toronto Dominion Air Canada Aeroplan Visa, you should be eligible for up to 12x points per dollar of spend.
Happy Shopping!
If you are a TD Aeroplan Visa Card Holder, will you be taking advantage of this promotion ?
The world-class Qatar Airways Q – Suites Business Class Cabin has changed the way people travel in business class all over the world. Some have stated that the Qatar Airways Q Suites are so luxurious, that a first class cabin is unnecessary. We would find ourselves in the Q Suites cabin on our return trip with Qatar Airways on a fourteen-hour flight from the Middle East to the West Coast of the United States . We would get a chance to experience every Qatar amenity and service on our flight. How would our flight measure up to these high standards?

Review: Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class A350-1000, Doha Hamad International Airport – San Francisco International Airport
“Qatar Airways Q Suites has transformed international business class into a supremely private travel setting, accompanied with that world class wine list, terrific sleeping amenities in a cuddle class double bed”
This flight is of travels on Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Doha – San Francisco. For the return journey, please see our separate review of Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class San Francisco – Doha.
Checking into Qatar Airways:
After spending a pleasant layover at the Westin Doha Hotel and Spa on a nine hour connection, we took an Uber back to the airport.

We were dropped off near the Qatar Airways First and Business Class check in near Door #1 at Hamad International Airport. The Qatar Airways Premium check in area at Doha is exceptionally opulent, with an excess of space to maneuver and with minimal crowding.

Inside the Qatar Airways Business Class check in, I asked an attendent for a cool Qatar Airways Business Class plastic luggage tag. The staff weren’t so keen to give them out, referencing that they were for “checked baggage only”. We didn’t happen to see any in the outstations at San Francisco or at Malé.
We didn’t take the offer of the paper baggage tag and ended up leaving quickly to avoid getting our carry on baggage weighed. It was likely over the light Qatar Airways 15lbs carry on limit.

We walked straight through to the dedicated departure exit immigration gates. Our Canadian passports did not work at the e-Gates, so we queued for the sole immigration officer working at 5 AM for a digital photograph on the way out.
We passed through the dedicated First and Business Class security screening which seemed to take issue with my keys, camera and cable cords in my laptop bag. We were underway after a few minutes.
Visiting the Qatar Al Mourjan Lounge:
After security, we headed onto collect a Fifa 2022 World Cup soccer ball for my nephew, and onto the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge for some breakfast.
I reviewed the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge on our way through earlier, so I won’t do so again. It remained a comfortable place to relax.

We wandered upstairs to the restaurant. I was able to enjoy pre-flight breakfast with Eggs Royale; salmon eggs benny with unbranded pink champagne Charles Drappier.
At about forty five minutes prior to our flight, we headed over to Gate C8. Cate C8 was reasonably close to the lounge. Like many gates along this bank designed to service flights to the united states, it was a secure hold facility.

A recent announcement indicated that there was a flight delay. As a result in order to kill off some time, we walked up the concourse to the new Doha Hamad International Airport Garden structure

We eventually returned to Gate C8 near many other flights departing around the same time for the United States. These included Qatar Airways service to Philadelphia, Washington, Miami, Seattle, New York among many others.
Boarding Qatar Airways:
We entered into the secure holding area at Gate C8. We had a secondary security screening along with a laptop swabbing for explosives.
There wasn’t a lot of space inside the secure gate area. Qatar Airways boarded First, Business Class, and those needing extra time to board all at once. Qatar Airways actually made efforts at managing the line for those on Group 3 trying to board with First & Business. It was mini mayhem for about five minutes getting on.

Qatar Airways had proper double jet bridge boarding today in Doha. We were able to glide down a separate jet bridge for business class to get on board Qatar Airways Q Suites cabin.

On Board Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class:
After the disorganized boarding process, we boarded at Door L1 and entered in to the Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Cabin. Qatar Airways had its boarding music playing, which sets a traditional, understated, but elegant middle eastern mood.
On board, I located my centre facing rear seat at 3E. The Qatar Airways Q Suite purple cabin is elegant looking and offers a contemporary look with modern colours.

Qatar Airways offers a combination of seating throughout its Q Suites Cabin. The Qatar Airways Business Class Cabin offers seating in either a 1 – 2 – 1 configuration with separated middle seats (branded as a Twin Q Suite), or a 1 – 2 – 1 configuration with joined middle seats (branded a Double Q Suite). The outer single seats facing the windows are branded as a Single Q Suite.
The Double Q Suite:
Our seating reservation had us in the Twin Q Suite in the middle bank at Row 3. Booking the combination of joined Twin or Double Q Suites (in the middle) requires a call to the Qatar Airways Reservation Centre. Although the privacy wall was up on our arrival, we would get the opportunity to lower it later in the flight.

The Qatar Airways Q Suites offer a double walled suite with sliding doors. The space offered with the Qatar Airways Q Suites rivals some International First Class cabins with the amount of privacy that is offered.

It is worth mentioning that all of the Double Q Suites face rearwards towards the back of the plane. While this may bother some, I didn’t find it all that bad with the difference noticed during take off and landing.

The Qatar Q Suites Business Class Cabin does not offer overhead bins storage above the centre seats. With no storage bins over the centre seats, the outer bins can get a a little fuller than some other business class cabins. We didn’t have any storage issues, we just didn’t have a storage bin all to ourselves.

Sitting into the Q Suite, the suite itself offers wide twenty six inch entertainment monitors, and a remarkably interconnected space when the middle privacy screen is lowered.

There is a small shelf available for storage of items such as passports or wallets.

Each suite offers a walled space that is highly functional. The seat offers a small adjacent space for articles, in addition to a small table for storage.

Each seat has a reading light that is located above your shoulder. It offers a variety of lighting options from dim to full spot light.

The foot rest well offered a somewhat compact space. While you won’t store anything here, it was a comfortable rest for your feet. I did find the space a little compact in nature, and especially challenging for tall side sleepers like me.

There was a comfortable pillow and blanket waiting for us at the seat. The Qatar Airways blanket is remarkably comfortable and plush in its purple colour.

On our seat, a pillow with a Qatar Airways slip cover was waiting for us. The slogan “Beautiful Destinations often lead to everlasting memories” was travel oriented, but it appealed to MrsWT73.

The Amenity Kit:
Qatar Airways has partnered with Diptyque Parfumeur Paris for its amenity kits. Qatar Airways describes these as “Offering signature fragrances inside each amenity kit, premium passengers will receive signature body and face care products designed to elevate the senses, packaged beautifully in elegant Diptyque branded amenity bags and luxurious bespoke gift boxes”.
While we got one of the bespoke gift boxes on the way out, we received a more practical bag on this time around. It contained the same contents as the box.

Inside the box, there were several Diptyque products including Fresh Hand Cream, Essential Face Cream and Nourishing Lip Palm.
Qatar Airways Pyjamas by The White Company:
Qatar Airways provides pyjamas for all of it’s business class customers on overseas flights that have a night time component. The current provider for Qatar Airways Business Class is The White Company. We’ve also seen these pyjamas on British Airways First Class. I would stock up on a large set of pyjamas for this particular day time flight.

The pjyamas were loose fitting and appropriately sized. As a 187 cm person (6ft 2 inches) with an athletic build, I easily fit a large size. Given the long fourteen hour flight, I used the pjyamas and found them very comfortable for a long haul flight.
Pre-Departure Services:
Qatar Airways offered a purser introduction while we settled in waiting for departure. Qatar Airways opens their great champagne while on the ground at Doha International Airport. Today’s champagne was the outrageously expensive Champagne Alexandra Laurent Perrier Rosé 2016, currently retailing for $500 USD a bottle. I am happy to report that the champagne was also properly chilled; something that didn’t happen in Malé even at altitude.

A towel service was also provided. The towel service was provided in a wrapped container, which was again a slightly low rent, but pandemic safe touch.
The Dinner Menu:
While we were waiting to depart San Francisco, the menus were dropped off. Qatar Airways offers an impressive and showy dinner menu and wine list printed on elegant paper stock.

Today’s flight was split into two meal services. With the flight departing at 8:10 AM, the first meal service was a breakfast offering. This was followed by a second service that was a dinner styled supper offering.

As always, Qatar Airways has an excellent wine list. Today’s wine list offered something for everyone from both old world and new world parts of the wine world.

For those not interested in wine, there were also some cocktails, spirits (including Grey Goose Vodka) and whisky available.

Our first course food order was taken on the ground while we were in Doha.
There was more than enough food and wine available on this flight. Qatar Airways lived up to its reputation as having quality food and beverage giving it’s travellers something to look forward to on this particular flight.
Oryx One In Flight Entertainment:
Qatar Airways offers an excellent world class entertainment system called Oryx One. The entertainment is delivered through a twenty six inch monitor, which is class leading for business class cabins.
Before we got underway, I took a look at the Oryx flight map which showed our flight time and distance to our destination of San Francisco.
We also had the in flight safety video play. One of the advantages of having such an expansive route network is that there are many places such as Los Angeles and Cape Town, where you can film your in flight videos.
The Qatar Airways Oryx One entertainment system has a large number of movies. With an international audience, Oryx One separates the movies in to Hollywood, Arabic, Bollywood and African categories.

Qatar Airways also offered wifi on board our flight from Doha to San Francisco. The pricing was at $10 USD for a full flight, or a free hour for Qatar Airways Privilege Club Members.

I didn’t test out the speed, but it remained an option in the event you absolutely needed to stay connected.
Departing Doha Hamad Internatonal Airport:
We were about one hour late pushing back from the gate at Doha Hamad International Airport. The pilot announced that there would be an effort to make up some time during the journey.
We taxied out to Runway 34R and departed Doha International Airport. Based on a combination of camera angles, we were able to set up a nice set of camera angles as we left Qatar.

The Meal: A Full Breakfast Service
Shortly after we took off, the meal service was offered. Given that we had eaten in the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge, and with fourteen hour flight ahead of us, we opted to eat about two hours into the flight.
I started off with Fresh Orange Juice. It was terrific and mostly pulp free with a punch. The first course was Home Made Mango Yoghurt; with contained seeds on top. It was presented with a fresh assorted bread basket.

For the main course, I went with a California Omelette with Ricotta, Avocado and Roasted Tomato. Surprisingly, it was not the best dish by Californian standards and was a little little processed tasting.

I finished breakfast at about the three hour mark into the flight while we were passing over the Black Sea with Azerbaijan on the right.
Sleeping in Qatar Airways Q Suites:
Qatar Airways Q Suites offers an excellent sleep experience that rivals the worlds best business class. Qatar Airways offers full mattress pads, a sleep sheet along with fluffy purple blankets.
After breakfast, I called the flight attendant to have the bed made up. The space was converted into a Double Q Suite sleeping area. The combination is one of the few double beds in the sky; perfect for cuddling with your travel partner.

Settling into the sleeping portion of the Q Suite, we still had almost ten hours to go.

I changed into The White Company sleep sets. The turn down service provided a thin mattress pad and puffy purple blanket.
The footwell was tiny and not as comfortable flying westwards. During the sleep time, there were many sounds of dining throughout the cabin and clinking of cutlery which didn’t make it as restful a sleep. Flying westward it was also less conducive to a good nights sleep with the gradual shift in time zones.

I ended up sleeping from 11: 00 AM until about 6:30 PM. Given the jet lag, I had a light sleep with substantial turbulence.
In terms of sleep quality, as I had mentioned previously, the seat itself was quite firm. I would say that it was about eight out of ten on the firmness scale. This was great for a performance car, but a little firm for a comfortable sleep.

There were no air jets nozzles in the centre of the cabin, which made for a little bit of a hot cabin when you’re ensconced in the sheets, fluffy blankets and pillows.
The Second Service: Dinner
At about two hours before landing, I ordered the second meal service. The table was immediately set with Qatar’s white table cloth, tea light, water service and assorted bread basket.
The first course was a Burrata Tomato Carpaccio with rosemary fried black olives, olive oil and balsamic dressing. It was tasty although all the flavours went together ok. Surprisingly, the tomatoes were a little wilted and without much flavour or sharpness.

MrsWT73 enjoyed a Qatar’s version of classic Arabic Mezze platter. While it was a solid dish, it wasan’t as impressive as the ones that you find in Emirates First Class.

For a second course, I enjoyed a Broccoli Miso Soup. It was presented as a little lukewarm although it was flavourful and I could taste the broccoli more than the miso tastes. I paired this with Chardonnay Penfolds Bin 311, Australia; it was good and balanced wine and went well with the starters.

For the main course, I went with a chargrilled lamp kofta and a lamb chop, tomato focaccia, white aubergine and harissa oil.

Of the two meat dishes, the lamb kofta was better than the lamp chop. The chop was fully cooked and a little gristly. It was a good combination of flavours although given the jet lag, I wasn’t super hungry or have a lot of appetite.

I finished the four course meal with fresh berries and fruit with sour cream. This was the freshest part of the meal, which wasn’t up to Qatar’s usual excellent standards. Despite being interesting and engaging, the meal tasted as if it wasn’t as fresh as it could be.

I had a towel service to finish the meal and the last towel service of this particular trip.

Our flight wound down, having almost reached our final destination of San Francisco. We were lastly presented with some Läderach Swiss Chocolates to enjoy or take away with us.

Landing at San Francisco International Airport:
It happened to be raining in San Fransico on our arrival. The state of California was undergoing an atmospheric river of rain, which caused some visibility and wind issues on our final approach.
After a go around on the descent, we ended up in a massive holding pattern while the airport switch up runways to a cross runway.

We ended up in a slip coming down towards the San Francisco runway. We landed safely on the runway. We were about twenty minutes late arriving to the gate.

We arrived to a very wet and rainy San Francisco over in the San Francisco International “A” Gates Terminal.

We promptly disembarked and headed off towards US Customs and Immigration. We were through without any delay courtesy of Global Entry.

We headed over to United Airlines to check in for a United Airlines Business Class San Francisco – Vancouver flight back home
My Thoughts on Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class:
Qatar Airways Q Suites is arguably the world’s best business class. The seating configuration is among the best in the world, and it’s paired with an excellent world class menu and wine list.
Today’s flights’ food was a little less fresh. It felt as little wilted by comparison. Despite this, I really enjoyed the flight and wouldn’t hesitate to get back on a Qatar Airways Q Suites flight again in the near future.
If you’ve flown Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class, did it live up to being one of your favourite business class air travel experiences ?
Our short stay in Doha had us returning to the familiar Westin Doha Hotel and Spa. The Westin was a brand new property a few years back, and we didn’t see a need to change properties to try somewhere new during our short stay in Doha. Our stay at the Westin Doha Hotel and Spa would be marked by a fabulous suite upgrade amid comfortable surroundings in this inner city resort like hotel. Read on to see how our stay was.

Review: The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa, Doha, Qatar
“Our Return to the The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa marked a comfortable overnight layover in one of the most modern and spacious Westin’s around. The hotel delivers on convenience, modern amenties and a comfortable stay”
We had a nine hour and fifteen minute connection time between our Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Malé – Doha and Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Doha – San Francisco flights.
While we could have opted for sleeping in reclining lounge chairs the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge, heading over to the in terminal Oryx Hotel, we just opted to get a hotel close to the Doha Hamad International Airport for a quick stay.
This marks our second visit to this hotel. If you care to see our first visit, please see our previous review of The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa.
Booking and Getting There:
We ended up staying at the Westin Doha Hotel and Spa as it was one of the closest Marriott property to the airport. I also considered staying at the Ritz Carlton Sharq Village & Spa using a Free Night Certificate for re-qualifying for Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Status, but instead given our short stay, I just opted for a paid cash rate at The Westin Hotel and Spa.
It was fairly easy to get a rate for under 550 QAR ($150 USD) making it likely better to use cash to stay at this property. I found reward nights going for between 16,000 – 17,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Despite Marriott Bonvoy points being able to go very far in Qatar, if you value Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.008 cents per point, you’re likely better off redeeming points if your rate is above $130 USD. I personally value keeping the points for higher value redemptions, but you may be wanting to get rid of some points. Under certain scenarios, redeeming points may make better sense.
By comparison, rooms at the Oryx In Terminal Transit hotel at Doha Hamad International Airport were retailing for 1,325 QAR or $365 USD, making the Westin Doha Hotel and Spa a substantially cheaper alternative.
I ended up taking an Uber from Doha Hamad International Airport to the Westin Hotel. The fare was 43 QAR ($13 USD) and the trip took about eighteen minutes, not including wait time at the airport. The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa is one of the closer Marriott Bonvoy properties to the airport, and is likely ten to twenty minutes closer than the inner city Marriott Bonvoy properties.
Arriving to the Westin Doha:
Salwa Road, Fereej Bin Mahmoud, Zone 23, PO Box 39474, Doha, Qatar
It’s always comforting to arrive at a familiar hotel that you’ve stayed at in the past. Since we had previously stayed at this property, we felt very much at home at this property.

The Westin Doha is located immediately across several malls and supermarkets in the area. These include several western restaurants, making it suitable for those on a longer business stay.

We led ourselves into the front doors of the property, where we had a security check of our hand baggage. We were immediately offered assistance with our carry on baggage, which we declined.

The lobby was deserted given our midnight weekday arrival. The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa has an over the top decor scheme to it that is both extravagant and under stated at the same time. It looks like no other Westin Hotel that I’ve ever stayed at.

The lobby contains a large amount of sitting space, along with glass sculptures that run the interior of the atrium of the hotel. The atrium runs up the centre of the hotel towards the top floors, so it gives the hotel a very airy and bright feeling.

We were promptly attended to at the front desk. We were thanked for being Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Level members. We were provided an option to have both the welcome Marriott Bonvoy 1,000 points welcome bonus and a breakfast to go given that we were leaving early. This was a nice touch o the hotel’s part. We ended up declining this, in favour of breakfast in the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Lounge instead.

We were also informed that we had been given an Marriott Bonvoy upgrade into the bridal suite for the evening. This information didn’t really mean anything to us at check in, but it turned out we had been upgraded into a massive suite designed to fit about fifteen people. While Marriott Bonvoy tends to underwhelm with upgrades in North America, I’ve generally found treatment outside of North America to be much better.

We navigated ourselves to the elevators and headed up to the room. The hallways were a little dark in lighting, and we found our way to the end of the hall to locate our room.
The Room: The Bridal Suite, Club Lounge Access, 1 Bedroom Suite, 1 King, Pool View
Our assigned upgraded room was one of the largest by square foot rooms I had ever been given in a Westin Hotel. It’s clear that the Bridal Suite was purpose built and designed for entertaining a large number of people for the purposes of a wedding or special event.

Immediately upon entering the room, I found myself in the hallway towards the living area. There was a small ensuite bathroom available in the hallway.

After a few steps, I found myself in a massive living room space. The living room space was a combination of both a sitting area and dining room area for four persons.

The living room space offered a sectional couch with seating for four designed for watching television, a desk and chairs with seating for three, along with a table and chairs that could easily handle four persons. As if that wasn’t enough, there was an additional chaise lounger in the corner that could also accomodate two persons.

The hotel had provided a nice complimentary welcome amenity in the hotel room, consisting of several small canapés and a welcome letter. It’s always a nice touch getting welcome amenities, since it makes the stay just that much more comfortable.

The living room also featured a small cabinet featuring glassware, a refrigerator and a tea and coffee maker Nespresso set.

The Bedroom:
Off the living room, a door way led to the bedroom. The bedroom contained a Westin Heavenly Bed, along with a reasonably spacious amount of room. The bed also contained a chaise lounger at the food of the bed, which is always a nice touch for storage or seating comfort when getting your shoes on.

In terms of sleep quality, we had a resoundingly good sleep in the Westin bed. The room was very quiet, and we didn’t get disturbed by any other noise from within the suite.

The bedroom had a large ensuite bathroom that featured both a stand up rain shower, and a separate Water Closet bathroom. The sinks were a double vanity sink combination, making it easy to get ready quickly.

In addition to the stand up shower, there was also a modern tub located in between the bathroom and the bedroom. It was located next to a walk in closet. I thought that the tub was a little out of place, but they made do with the configuration of the room and the space available to them.

Immediately off the bathroom was a giant walk in closet. The size of this walk in closet was the largest I’d ever seen in a hotel anywhere, even in some of the outrageous villas that I had seen in the Maldives.

Overall, I was exceptionally satisfied with the room. It offered lots of space to stretch out in, which is always nice when you are travelling.
Around the Hotel:
The Westin Club Lounge:
The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa property operates a Westin Club Lounge. We were given instructions that we had access to the lounge as per our Marriott Bonvoy Elite benefits. While Marriott Bonvoy only guarantees access for Marriott Bonvoy Elites at Sheraton and Marriott properties, we were given instructions that we had access to the lounge.

Sadly, I didn’t get an opportunity to get inside the lounge as it was closed during our visit. It wasn’t a lounge that had twenty four hour access. During our visit, the lounge was only open:
- 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM (refreshments)
- 5:30 – 8:30 PM (Hors d’oeuvres)

It’s perhaps worth mentioning that the lounge advertised a dress code, which is always appreciated, but slightly unusual in my experience. This is perhaps set up to avoid people coming straight in from the pool, despite the lounge and the pool being in entirely separate parts of the building.
The Outdoor Pool:
The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa offers an outdoor pool along with a small area of resort grounds. During my particular visit, the pool had been drained and was closed for maintenance.

Despite this, there were some small resort ground areas that allowed a pleasant but short walk within the hotel property. There were also a few chairs outside of sheesha pipes or other outdoor coffees in busier times.

We stayed on the property for about seven and a half hours before taking an Uber bak to Doha Hamad International Airport and our Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Doha – San Francisco flight back home.
My Thoughts about the Westin Doha:
All in all, the Westin Doha and Spa was a worthwhile stay that was all too short with our brief layover. The rooms were in great condition being new and the hotel is reasonably situated close to the airport. The only real minus is that there isn’t much immediately around the hotel in terms of easily accessible restaurants. I’d rate this property as “highly recommended” for a Westin overnight stay.
If you’ve stayed at the Westin Doha, did you enjoy this new property?
Qatar Airways makes an effort to ensure that it’s Premium Cabin customers in First or Business Class have expedited services for end – to – end travel through it’s network. With dedicated check in lines, priority security and priority boarding along with a dedicated lounge network, Qatar Airways has placed a premium on it’s commercially important customers. The Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Lounge in Doha is another example of these efforts and offers a comfortable place to recharge prior to arriving.

Review: Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals First & Business Class Immigration Lounge, Doha Hamad International Airport, Qatar
Qatar Airways features a little known arrivals facility in the Doha Hamad International Airport. The arrivals facility consists of an immigration lounge that can be used prior to your arrival into Qatar.
If you’d like to read about the departures lounge, please see our latest review of the Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Class Lounge.
Locating the Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Lounge:
We arrived into Doha Hamad International Airport on an excellent Qatar Airways Q Suites Malé – Doha flight. As a result of an eleven hour layover, we opted to transfer to a hotel for the night, specifically the Westin Doha Hotel and Spa.
After landing, we headed for the immigration exit check points for Qatar. The Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Immigration Lounge is very easy to find on the left hand side of the arrivals concourse.

Map Courtesy of Doha Hamad International Airport
It is easily marked and travellers won’t have any difficulty finding it. Despite the marking actually indicating that signs are for Al Salwa First and Al Mourjan business, you’ll find that the pathways actually lead to the Qatar Airways Premium Business Lounge.

Accessing the Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Immigration Lounge:
The Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Immigration Lounge is accessible by travellers in Qatar Airwaya First or Business Class.

Qatar Airways First Class and Business Class (Elite, Comfort) and One World First Class and Business Class passengers can access this lounge on a complimentary basis.
Qatar Airways has unbunded some of their business class fares. Accordingly, some Qatar Business Class Fares do not automatically offer lounge access.
Fortunately, basic business class passenger and Economy Class passengers throughout the network can purchase lounge access on line, at the check-in counters, preferred travel agents, or Qatar Airways’ sales offices.
Access is also likely granted per the One World First and Business Class Lounge Access policy, even though this isn’t specifically a One World Lounge:
- Customers flying First or Business Class have access to the equivalent class of lounge regardless of their frequent flyer status. First Class passengers may use a Business Class or frequent flyer lounge if a First Class lounge is not available.
- First Class passengers may invite one guest to join them in the lounge. The guest must also be travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld airline.
- Access is available on the day of travel (or before 06:00am the following day), at the airport from which the oneworld flight on which the eligible customer is travelling departs.
- Connecting between oneworld marketed and operated flights:
- First and Business Class customers connecting on the same day of travel, or before 6am the following day, can access the lounge when travelling between an international long haul (a oneworld international long haul flight is defined as an international flight marketed and operated by any oneworld carrier with a scheduled flight time longer than 5 hours) and an international short haul or domestic flight (and vice-versa).
- Lounge access will be determined on the international long haul ticketed flight (either First of Business Class) regardless of the ticketed class of travel on the international short haul or domestic flight.
- You must be prepared to show your boarding pass or itinerary showing travel in First or Business class on the international long haul flight, in order to access the lounge before your international short haul or domestic flight.
Today’s access was courtesy of our Qatar Airways Business Class Ticket, which was redeemed through Alaska Mileage Plan.
Our boarding cards were scanned by a host at the lounge entrance. We were then given access to the lounge.
Inside Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Immigration Lounge:
The lounge itself is a large square space that contains lounge chairs and tables. The lounge itself has always been completely empty every time I’ve passed through.

Immigration facilities are located within the lounge itself. They can be seen in the distance in the back of the below photographs.

The lounge has access to wifi. As a result, it’s a perfect place to finalize your travel arrangements in to the city, or perhaps respond to or address emails before you lose connectivity.
Food and Beverage:
The Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Lounge has a small amount of food and beverage available. It’s nothing like the over the top restaurants located upstairs in their Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge, but at least it’s something.

You’ll find tinned soft drinks and sparkling water, light snacks and an espresso machine for those that need to perform after a long flight.

There were also a number of baked goods presented in an etagière.

We briefly paused here to make sure our paperwork was in order before passing through Qatar Immigration. There were no queues and no other travellers, making this immigration entry point the one to be at for a fast entry into Qatar. We transferred over to The Westin Doha Hotel and Spa for an overnight layover.
My Thoughts the Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Lounge at Doha Hamad International Airport:
The Qatar Airways makes every effort to provide expedited efforts for their business class travellers. The Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals Lounge at Doha Hamad International Airport is just one of many end – to – end features designed to assist in expediting your journey.
The Qatar Airways Premium Arrivals space is great for making those final travel arrangements or finishing up on issues requiring internet connectivity prior to entering into Qatar. The expedited and private immigration check point is likely the primary advantage for using this space. You’ll be on your way quickly and without much delay.
If you’ve flown regularly on Qatar Airways, do you appreciate the end to end features designed to make your travel faster ?
One of the most popular reward redemptions out there is on Qatar Airways to and from the Maldives. Thankfully, Qatar Airways offers a fair amount of capacity to and from the Maldives from it’s hub in Doha Hamad International Airport. Our returning flight on Qatar Airways would have us in their world class Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class product. The departing flight was well timed to allow for return from our resort by sea plane on Qatar Airways.

Review: Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class A350-1000, Malé Velana International Airport – Doha Hamad International Airport
We checked in with Qatar Airways at Malé Velana International Airport after a terrific stay at The St Regis Maldives. Per Qatar Airways policy, our checked baggage was checked all the way though to San Francisco. We wouldn’t have access to it during our layover in Doha, Qatar.
After they accepted our baggage, we visited The Leeli Lounge in the departure hall to relax prior to our flight.

If you want to hear more detail about The Leeli Lounge Malé Velana International Airport, I encourage you to read our more detailed review.
Boarding Qatar Airways:
After about an hour in the lounge, we left the lounge and headed for the departure gate. It turned out we were departing from a bus gate that was beyond the walking distance of some of the closer bus gates.

We arrived to the gate just as the Business Class boarding was finished. We were among the first on board the bus but the bus filled up quickly with Zone 2 boarding types. There was no separate bus today and we had a full ride out to the apron.

We had double door stairway climb up to the Qatar Airbus 350-1000 today with no real door enforcement for boarding other than the scramble up the stairs.

On Board Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class:
We boarded our flight by stairs at door 1L and turned right left into the main cabin of Qatar Airways Q Suites Business class. While we had originally been booked and were expecting to be seated in a Qatar Airways leased Cathay Pacific Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft, we were pleasantly surprised that we had been upgraded to the Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class product. We didn’t have any forewarning of this, other than some seat assignments that didn’t seem to want to stick in our reservations profile.

The Qatar Airways Business Class is set up in a 1 – 2 – 1 configuration across the aircraft. The Qatar Airways Q Suites is an elegant looking cabin, and we immediately settled into comfortable surroundings.

I was seated in row 1A today with MrsWT73 travelling along in 2A. I would be in one of the half backward facing seats today. The rear facing seat was most noticeable during take off and landing, but otherwise it was exactly the same seat.
Seat 1A had two windows looking outside towards the bus gates. Much like our other Qatar Airways Q Suites flights, the suit was highly functional and comfortable.

The Qatar Airways Q Suites offers ample counter space to allow for storage of passports, laptops and in flight beverages. The screen is also quite large and allows for great entertainment viewing.

Just across the aisle were seats 3E and 3F. These seats were among the pairs of seats that offer a wall that drops to form a double bed.

The usual big purple fluffy blanket was waiting for us on the seat. Qatar Airways puts some money into the blanket and it’s thick enough to actually be of some use. I was able to store mine in the foot well.

Each Qatar Airways Q Suite is well designed for functionality. A storage compartment exists next to each seat that allows for storage of wallets. There was also an individual reading light located in the shoulder rest.

One of my favourite features about the Qatar Airways Airbus 350-1000 is that the seat positions have individual air vents. I find that this makes the flight a lot more comfortable than without them, since you can control your air circulation and temperature a little bit.

The Qatar Airways Q Suites Cabin is exceptionally private, supremely comfortable and class leading when it comes to business class cabin comfort. With private doors and an aisle orientation, I was able to enjoy the flight completely undisturbed.
Pre-Departure Services:
While we were waiting for the rest of the plane to board, we had a flight attendant introduction at our seat. We had our pre-departure beverage order taken.
I asked for some of the wonderful Alexandra Rosé champagne. However, Qatar Airways wasn’t allowed to open any alcohol while on the ground in Malé.

Instead, I ended up with sparkling water with lemon and a pre-wrapped towel.
While the remaining passengers started to board, the captiain “Victor” announced a five hour and twenty minutes flying time to Doha with a cruise altitude of 40,000 feet.
During the final preparations, our dinner order was taken on the ground in Malé.
The Amenity Kit:
Unlike on our trip out, we didn’t get any amenity kit provided for this particular leg. This wasn’t something that we missed a great deal and it’s being mentioned simply for a point of reference.
The Dinner Menu:
As final flight preparations were finishing, we were offered a dinner and wine menu for this flight. With a late departure of 8:55 PM, a light dinner was on the menu for tonight.

Qatar Airways provided an excellent wine menu and there was something for everyone to enjoy on this particular flight.

In Flight Entertainment:
Qatar Airways brands it’s in flight entertainment system as Oryx One. Given that it is known as a long haul carrier, there are hundreds of movies to select from.

Not wanting to settle into anything immediately, I ended up playing with the moving map. It displayed our position in Malé, along with our general flight track towards Doha, Qatar.

Finding that the flight map had so many combinations, I lost interest in it and enjoyed looking at my passport with Maldivian Immigration stamps.

Departing Malé:
Without much traffic, we had a fast departure out of Malé Velana International Airport. I followed along with the camera system in the Oryx One entertainment system.

We were up to cruising altitude really quickly with dinner service starting almost immediately.
The Meal: A Light Dinner
The dinner service started with a pre-departure supper cocktail. I asked for the deluxe Alexandra Rosé Champagne (retailing for over $500 a bottle). It was delivered with mixed nuts. Unfortunately, the champagne was presented at room temperature, which was a shame for such a nice bottle.

A white table cloth was presented and the table was set for dinner service.

The first course was roasted tomato soup with crème fraîche. It was presented with a stainless steel domed topper to keep it warm. The soup was presented at the right temperature and warm enough to enjoy without being overly hot.

I switched to the Albert Bichot Montagny Premier Cru for the next dish, which was a marinated prawn, scallop and tuna with mixed quinoa. It was a nice taster and great portion size for a starter.

Knowing that Qatar offers great Indian food, I went with the Chicken Biryani with Raita. It was exceptionally tasty and light enough to be enjoyed late at night.

I closed dinner off with a chocolate mouse with golden pearls. While it wasn’t as sensational as the last sundae dessert I had on Qatar Airways, the chocolate mouse was pretty tasty and a great way to end the meal.

Overall, Qatar hit it just right with a full meal service for this five hour flight. The service was not too heavy for the late supper hour, and there were enough upscale items on the menu to make the meal feel luxurious.
Landing at Doha Hamad International Airport:
After a few hours, it was time to land at Doha Hamad International Airport. On my way to the Maldives, I had one of the inner cuddle class seats and wasn’t able to enjoy the view on approach.
This time, I was able to gaze out the window and enjoy the views of Qatar which had grown up a bit since my last visit almost ten years ago.

We had a landing on Runway 16 R, along with a taxi over to a remote stand.

We parked next to a Qatar Airways Boeing 787 in the eastern portion of the airport.

We spotted a few Audi’s waiting for those that had paid for Hamad Airway’s VIP Service. Unfortunately, that wasn’t us today and instead we had a dedicated Business Class bus to transfer us over to the Hamad International Terminal building.

We would head over to the Westin Doha Hotel and Spa for a one night layover followed by a journey back to the Americas on Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Doha -San Francisco.
My Thoughts on Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class:
The Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class flight was a welcomed surprise when we were expecting a lessor business class product.
The food and beverage on the Qatar Airways flight was light and appropriately weighted for a late evening flight. The wine was terrific, although some of it wasn’t presented at the proper temperature.
Despite this, Qatar Airways is still a pretty terrific way to get too any from the Maldives. I’d easily fly them again in the future.
If you’ve flown Qatar Airways Business Class from the Maldives, did you find the late evening departure to be helpful in your travel plans ?
I returned to The Leeli Lounge Malé Velana International Airport several years after my last visit to the Maldvies. Since I had last visited, the airport had been renamed from the Malé Nasir Ibrahim International Airport to the Malé Velana International Airport. Our past visit to The Leeli Lounge was really popular on http://www.worldtraveller73.com. As a result, I thought I would update the post on the current state of the lounge and what you might expect on a visit.

Review: The Leeli Lounge, Malé Velana International Airport, Maldives
“The Leeli Lounge provided the only lounge environment in Malé Velana International Airport. It continues to offer Plaza Premium like lounge settings, with light food and beverage (including those tuna fish sandwiches) in a dry environment”
We’ve previously visited The Leeli Lounge on our last trip through the Maldives. Despite not having many changes, I decided to review it again. asthat post prooved to be quite popular. If you’d like to see our previous review of The Leeli Lounge, please see.
The Leeli Lounge is the only lounge currently operating in the Malé Velana International Airport. Malé is expecting a brand new airport which is currently under construction. It was expected to be complete in 2022 but the pandemic put a halt to all that. It’s now expected to be finished in 2025. As a result, we’ll be stuck with The Leeli Lounge for Malé International Departures, for the next several years.
Checking into Qatar Airways:
After spending six days at The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, and five days at The W Maldives, we found ourselves returning to Malé on a Trans Maldivian Airways Vommuli – Malé sea plane ride.
After a short visit to the St Regis Maldives Lounge in the Malé Noovuli Sea Plane Terminal, we were led over by van to the Malé Velana International Airport.
We were able to bypass the long queue to enter the terminal as a result of flying in business class. The queue appeared to be strictly for capacity control reasons inside the air conditioned terminal itself.

Our St Regis Maldives handler took us over to the Qatar Airways check in desks and assisted with the luggage while we checked in for Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Malé – Doha onwards to Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Doha – San Francisco.

Per Qatar Airways policy, our checked baggage was checked all the way though to San Francisco. Accordingly, we wouldn’t have access to it during our nine hour layover in Doha, Qatar. We packed accordingly in preparation for this, and had a carry on suitcase with enough clothes and toiletries for several days.
Locating the Leeli Lounge:
After checking in, we proceeded upstairs for immigration departure and security screening. After clearing those steps, we found ourselves in the departure hall of the Velana International Airport.
The departure hall contains a few interesting things. It’s got the only Maldivian Post Office box that I’ve ever seen in the Maldives. The departure hall also happens to have the most expensive Burger King I’ve had the opportunity to pass by; even more expensive than the one at the Mahé International Airport in the Seychelles.

We eventually rounded the corner to find The Leeli Lounge located across from the Burger King. It is located immediately in the duty free area on the same level as the exit immigration and security screening.

The Leeli Lounge is located immediately after the international duty free section on the left hand side of the walk way.
Accessing the Leeli Lounge:
The Leeli Lounge at Malé Velana International Airport is the contract lounge for most international carriers. There are no other branded lounges at this airport, making this the only place to be for pre-flight departure lounge relaxation.
Typical access to the lounge is provided through the class of service on your ticket through contracted arrangement with your carriers. Our access today was courtesy of our Qatar Airways Business Class Malé – Doha flight.
During our visit, The Leeli Lounge was selling walk up access for three hours for:
- Adults: $37.80 USD
- Children: $27 USD

At the time of our visit, the lounge was not a member of Priority Pass or other lounge access programs. As a result, you’ll need to be flying business class or pay for access in order to gain entry into this space.
Inside the Leeli Lounge:
The Leeli Lounge is a pretty functional space with seating for one hundred and fifty people. The chairs and furnishings are similar to what we’ve seen in Plaza Premium Lounges around the world leading to a comfortable but not exotic experience.
Immediately upon entering The Leeli Lounge, you’ll find yourself in the main lounge area. There were about sixty spaces to sit in this portion of the lounge, with the room stretching out on both sides of the passageways.

Each side of the walkway on the upper lounge area had seating for four with side tables. Being in the middle of the building, the seating didn’t have any views or other natural daylight.

The upper lounge area also had a bank of computers for accessing the internet. These didn’t happen to be too popular, and I can’t imagine many coming to the maldives needing to check up on work before their travels home.

The second half of the lounge led to a lower level. This was accessed down through four steps to a slightly lower level. There was also a small ramp on the right hand side of the lounge, adjacent to this seating area.

There were enough odd ramps up and down to make this place a little bit labyrinth like in nature.

Despite being in the same room, the lower level seating was much less busy than the upper level. Navigation of the ramp or the stairs provided a bit of a natural barrier to the area.

We would end up on the lower level of the lounge for seating for the duration of our time. While it was slightly more spacious, it was pretty straight forward in nature.

Although the lounge contained quite a bit of places to sit, I found that it got quite full towards the peak evening hours after dinner.
Food and Beverage:
The Leeli Lounge offered some light food and beverage. After coming off extravagant resort food, The Leeli Lounge felt almost a little industrial in their offerings.

The food and beverage station was located near the lounge entrance. It contained a wrap around counter buffet filled with various hot and cold items.

The food was presented in an almost cafeteria style institutional manner. Tasty tuna sandwiches were wrapped in cello tape, and some baked goods were presented in industrial containers.

There was enough food to snack on, but I wouldn’t plan on coming here for a replacement meal to substitute dinner. Small tuna fish sandwiches and Indian curries can only make up for a snack, in my humble opinion and I’d be looking for something more substantial if I was pressed to fill up for dinner.

Despite the heat out, there were only a small number of beverages in the lounge. The cold beverages consisted of tinned drinks without ice. Consistent with the British heritage of the Maldives, there were a number of Schweppes drinks of Bitter Lemon and Tonic Water.

Just like my last visit, the lounge was completely empty of alcohol. If you were looking for a glass of wine or perhaps champagne before your trip, you’ll have to wait until you’re airborne in your cabin.

We would spend about fifty five minutes in the lounge prior to heading off to our Qatar Q Suites Business Class Malé – Doha flight.
The Bottom Line: The Leeli Lounge Male
Overall, the Leeli Lounge was a reasonable but highly functional place to relax before a flight. The seating areas a pretty utilitarian, and the food (as compared to resort food) is pretty basic and straight forward.
Like I previously reported on, it won’t be somewhere to get to early, but it’s far better than relaxing in the Velana International Airport Terminal.
If you’ve visited the Leeli Lounge, did you miss having a drink before your flight?
I have been a frequent user of Hertz Rental cars over the years. I’ve held Hertz President’s Circle status for a number of years now. I’ve typically acquired this through actual rentals, even though there are many credit cards that partner with Hertz to offer a short cut to holding this status. Now – we can add another route to Hertz elite Gold Plus Rewards Status. Hertz has just announced a status match partnership with Marriott Bonvoy which will be of particular interest to their elite members.
Hertz now Offering a Status Match for Marriott Bonvoy Elite Members.
I’ve maintained Hertz President’s Circle status for the past several years as a result of some heavy work travel. One of the primary benefits of Hertz President’s Choice is the Ultimate Choice aisle where you get to pick any car in the aisle and go. The marketplace has standardized this feature across many of the major rental companies in this space.
Hertz is now offering a status match for elite members of the Marriott Bonvoy hotel program.
The Offer Details:
Hertz is offering a status match program for members of the Marriott Bonvoy Program.
- Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador Members are matched to Hertz President’s Circle
- Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Members are matched to Hertz Five Star
- Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Members are given a Fast Track to Hertz Five Star
The Fast Track to Five Star means that you can earn Hertz Five Star status after seven rentals, instead of the usual twelve rentals.

Hertz has also posted the offer Terms and Conditions and Frequently Asked Questions to this offer. The offer is not limited to members of a specific country, and appears to be valid for Marriott Bonvoy members worldwide.
Registration is required through the link, taking you to the co branded offer webpage.
The registration process seems fairly easy. The website asks for your Marriott Bonvoy number, your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards number, along with your first and last name. The terms and conditions promise that the new status will be reflected in your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards account in five days.
Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status is typically valid for a calendar year. However, this offer seems tied to your Marriott Bonvoy status, meaning if that you see a Marriott Bonvoy Elite Level downgrade, you’ll see a corresponding Hertz Gold Plus Rewards downgrade.
Occasionally, we have seen the Hertz Gold Plus Rewards program offer some soft landings during the pandemic travel season. This hasn’t been super reliable and is not always publicly announced. As a result, it’s possible you might get more than the remaining six months of this calendar year or status linked to Marriott Bonvoy out of this status match offer.
Unfortunately, the offer does not go in reverse. Meaning, that you can not get Marriott Elite status from holding hertz President’s Circle status.
About Hertz Gold Plus Rewards:
Since this space is about loyalty programs, Hertz offers a loyalty reward program called Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. The program is primarily designed to keep your driver’s licence, credit card and insurance preferences on file to allow for quicker rentals that allow for bypassing the legal formalities of the rental counter in many locations and allow you to get out on the road faster.
Hertz Gold Plus Rewards also offers the ability to earn Hertz Gold Plus Reward points. While we didn’t typically get a lot of value from car rental points, they’ve recently delivered outsized value from travel when car rental prices escalated during the pandemic when many Hertz locations reduced their vehicle fleets, driving up car prices.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards offers three tier levels of Gold, Five Star and it’s top tier President’s Circle. It’s around the Hertz Presidents Circle level where the benefits get interesting.
What are the Benefits of Hertz President’s Circle status?
The benefits of President’s Circle status include:
- Skip the counter and go straight to your car
- Choose from the widest selection of cars
- Enjoy guaranteed car-class upgrades
- Add an additional driver for free
- Drop the keys and go at rental return
- Earn 50% more Gold Plus Rewards points toward free days and car-class upgrades
As I have previously written, for the most part, the Hertz President’s Circle upgrades have been pretty good, if not outstanding. While booking an intermediate car, with some luck, we’ve been upgraded into Volvo’s.

There have also been times where I’ve gotten some pretty “by the book” one car class upgrades that haven’t been too exciting. I wouldn’t write home about the white Chevrolet Malibu’s that I’ve had over the years.
What are the Benefits of Hertz Five Star status?
The benefits of Five Star status include::
- Skip the counter and go straight to your car
- Choose from the widest selection of cars
- Enjoy car-class upgrades
- Add an additional driver for free
- Drop the keys and go at rental return
- Earn 25% more Gold Plus Rewards points toward free days and car-class upgrades
Admittedly, Hertz tends not to refer to your status level that much when you interact with them. Your Hertz status is typically most noticed on the information board at major airports.

I’m generally not thanked for being a Hertz President’s Circle member when interacting with agents at the counter. This is unlike Marriott who tends to thank you at the point of hotel check in, on a pretty regular and consistent basis. Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status isn’t the status to hold if your ego needs to be stroked, since it’s almost invisible.
What do I think about this offer?
While having status is better than nothing at all, this offer isn’t super compelling.
There are quite a few ways to Hertz Five Star status. Perhaps the easiest way is to get it through holding an American Express Platinum Card; where Hertz Five Star status is an added feature of card membership. This requires no effort, other than signing up at the onset of getting your card.

Most Marriott Bonvoy Members that are staying over 100 nights in hotels, and spending a minimum qualifying spend of $20,000 in order to qualify for the top level Marriott Bonvoy Ambassador level status are likely set in their travel patterns and preferred car rental brands. I can’t see many of them choosing to jump to Hertz on the sole promised benefit of Hertz President’s Circle status.
There are some Marriott Bonvoy Elite members that will benefit from this program. Particularly, those in the Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Level or higher. It only takes a few minutes to sign up. If you have Marriott Bonvoy Titanium level or higher, it makes sense to sign up if car rentals with Hertz are in your future. At the very least, you’ll be Hertz Five Star while you keep your Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Level status.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend renting seven cars from Hertz to qualify for the Marriott Platinum status match offer. I suppose it’s possible that some may take advantage of this with some pre-planned work travel.
All to say, this offer isn’t super compelling. However, it’s worth taking time to sign up if hold Marriott Bonvoy Elite status and you plan on renting a car with Hertz in the near future. It’s also worth holding this status if you don’t rent cars all at frequently, but maintain a Marriott Bonvoy elite level.
My Thoughts on the new Marriott Bonvoy and Hertz Status Match Offer:
It is always nice when hotel loyalty programs offer status match partnerships with other travel partners in the business. Today’s offer sees Marriott Bonvoy partnering with Hertz to offer elite members a status match (or fast track) offer to Hertz elite status.
Unfortunately, the offer isn’t all that compelling, and is actually inferior to what you can get from premium travel cards without any rentals at all. As a result, I’d only recommend signing up for this is it’s of some value to you.
Will this Marriott Bonvoy / Hertz status match offer be of use to you ?
Our last flight on Trans Maldivian Airways had us returning from the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort to the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal. Trans Maldivian Airways runs the propellor plane network of transfers between the various islands of the Republic of the Maldives. The The colors that you get to see flying over the coral atolls of the maldives is a unique experience and likely one that you will not easily forget.
This post is one chapter on my trip to the Republic of the Maldives. This trip was enhanced through Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan and Air Canada’s Aeroplan. Review: Trans Maldivian Airways De Havilland Twin Otter, St Regis Vommuli – Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal
We had a wonderful six day stay at The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort. Along with all things, our time at the property drew to the end.
Checking into Trans Maldivian Airways:
Our return trip back to the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal was handled by our St Regis Maldives butler. Since we had our bags weighed on the way out, we had no additional weighing.
Our plane was already on site when we arrived to the departure jetty. Our luggage had already been loaded and we were invited on board.

It’s always a sad experience to leave such a great resort. We’d have some comfort knowing that we would be back again someday.
Boarding Trans Maldivian Airways:
We clambered on board the Trans Maldivian Airways De Havilland Twin Otter. Seating on the Twin Otter is in a 1 – 2 configuration. It’s pretty compact with a full load in these things and I wouldn’t call the seating arrangements spacious.

After I had taken my seat in the second row, I was asked to re-seat towards the back of the aircraft due to weight issues.
As a result, I ended up in a different row than my wife. I also ended up in the centre row without great window views.

I would later learn that the best views for this particular journey are on the right hand side of the aircraft. As a result, I would recommend that you sit on the right hand side if you’re planning on taking any photographs.
Flying a Sea Plane over the Maldives:
Trans Maldivian Airways
Malé – Vommuli (Male Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal – St Regis Maldives Vommuli)
TMA Flight 232
Flown: March 20, 2023
Departure: 3:00 PM
Arrival: 4:15 PM
Booked: DeHavilland Twin Otter
Flown: DeHavilland Twin Otter
We got underway quickly with a lengthy taxi out from the St Regis Maldives resort. We didn’t get a fly by of the resort one last time, and we were underway on a north eastern track towards Malé very quickly. Since I was in a centre seat, I had a great view of the open air cockpit.

Much like our flight down, we had a forty five minute flight back up to Malé to the Noovilu Sea Plane terminal. The trip back up to Malé was the most remarkable flight of the four that we had, with the best views available of all of the journeys.

Spotting islands from the air in the Maldives allows for spotting of various resorts, islands and other inhabited islands. Some islands have terrific over water pontoons hinting at the life of luxury miles below.

I could spend hours looking at these coral atolls. Their shapes and sizes keep me entertained for hours as you glide over top of the Maldives. I’m surprised there are not more boat charter multi day trips in the Maldives as there are many lagoons to discover.

Even MrsWT73 got entranced by the views just outside the window.

Eventually, we got closer to the capital of Malé with more developed resorts. Some appeared to have a lot of reclaimed land as their island shapes were a little square.

I could stare at these blue colours all day long.
Landing at Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal:
We started a descent into the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal. With Malé a short distance away, there were a lot of things to look at on our arrival and final approach.

We spotted views of Malé and the Chinese funded friendship bridge linking Malé and Hulhule Island. This was a new addition since the last time that I had been through the Maldives. It was designed to alleviate some of the dense crowding in Malé; one of the world’s most densely populated cities.

We eventually descended on a track just east of the reclaimed island of Hulhumalé. We eventually swung around on a descent towards the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal. It was a great adventurous landing.

We eventually disembarked at the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal and had a short walk into the terminal building.

We were led back up to the St Regis Maldives Lounge Malé prior to transferring to our international flight home on Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Malé – Doha and Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Doha – San Francisco.
My Thoughts on Trans Maldivian Airways:
Our journey on Trans Maldivian Airways from Vommuli to Malé was an exceptionally scenic journey out of the St Regis Maldives. The views were spectacular and it marked one of my most favourite sea plane rides in the Maldives to date.
Make sure you get a window seat for this particular flight as you don’t want to be missing out on any views. The best views are on the right hand side of the aircraft, as you return back to Malé.
If you’ve flown to the St Regis Maldives, did you enjoy the views ?
The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort would represent the pinnacle of a Marriott Bonvoy reward redemption. There are few such aspirational luxury properties in the world that can be had almost entirely on hotel points from staying at a Marriott Fairfield Inn or a Four Points by Sheraton. Our trip to the famed St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort was one of the better points redemptions we’ve had throughout our lifetime with the Marriott Bonvoy program. This review is how we redeemed and explored every aspect of the St Regis Maldives experience.

Review: The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Maldives
“The St Regis Maldives represents the ultimate Marriott Bonvoy points redemption in terms of value per point. While there is every possible food and beverage option on the resort, the resort is hyper expensive and is set up a much larger format than you might expect for a private island luxury get away”
Booking The St Regis Maldives:
As I had reported earlier, we had previously stayed twice in the Republic of the Maldives at the excellent Park Hyatt Maldives. However, these days my World of Hyatt balance isn’t anywhere near where it should be for a redemption in the Maldives. As a result, we ended up researching the Marriott Bonvoy properties for a new redemption opportunity.
In addition to being drawn to the W Maldives as a result of its reputation of a world class house reef, we were also drawn to the most aspirational Marriott Bonvoy redemption in the global system; the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort. The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort would end up being the most sumptuous redemption out there. We would end up staying at the St Regis Maldives Vommuli for the latter half of our trip.
This is a detailed review of all aspects of the stay experience, combined all together in one post.
Marriott Bonvoy Opportunities:
We booked the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort using Marriott Bonvoy points. Marriott Bonvoy points have moved to variable pricing, so my strategy was to book the property as far in advance as possible, then watch for potential price reductions.
The basic reward redemption room is either the Garden Villa with Pool, 1 Bedroom Villa, 1 King, Sofa bed or the next category up and more exciting Overwater Villa with Pool, 1 Bedroom Villa, 1 King, Sofa bed. The Garden Villa with Pool are situated inland inside the island’s sandy ring road with no view. In contrast, the Over Water Villas are mostly oriented over the water, but are mostly inward facing towards the Vommuli Island.
The next category up is the Sunset Overwater Villa, 1 Bedroom Villa, 1 King, Sofa bed, which is the same as the same configuration as the 1 King Bed Overwater Villa with an ocean facing orientation. It’s usually available at a $250 USD premium or 50,000 additional Marriott Bonvoy points on a points redemption.
Booking about a year in advance, I was able to locate a rate of 491,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for a five night stay, with the fifth night free in the base 1 King Bed Overwater Villa. This worked out to about 98,500 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. Initially, I had a separate booking for the sixth night as I was’t able to get a stand alone booking.

About six weeks before our stay, I noticed that the price point for the resort dropped to 484,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for the same 6 night stay. This worked out to be a more reasonable 80,666 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, based on a six night average, with the fifth night free. As a result, I was able to cancel and re-book to get 24,500 Marriott Bonvoy points back, for a simple few clicks of the mouse.
For comparison, the paid cash rates were approximately $2,254 USD average per night. By using points, we were able to get $13,524 USD in room charges on a complimentary basis as a result of an excellent use of Marriott Bonvoy points.

If you value Marriott Bonvoy Points at 0.008 cents each, you’ll come out ahead by redeeming points against a room at the property if your room rate is above $645 USD. In the Maldives, you’re almost always better to redeem points as a result of the over the top costs of the hotels in the Maldives. I can’t ever imagine a scenario where the cash rate at the St Regis Maldives will be less than the price point of a points redemption. This makes Marriott Bonvoy points your highest value route to stay at this property.

It’s worth noting that there is a Trans Maldivian Airways Sea Plane Transfer charge of $808 USD per person, and a service charge of 10%. This is a pretty steep transportation “add on” for a forty five minute journey consisting of a single Twin Otter flight. At least, the pricing includes a generous 50 lbs of baggage allowance and we did not get charged any over weight baggage fees. Our longer transfer at the Park Hyatt Maldives that includes a Maldivian Air Dash 8 flight and a 35 minute boat journey is priced at a much more reasonable $575 USD. If you’re only coming for a few days, make sure you factor in the additional costs as a result of the sea plane. It may be worth it for a longer stay.
Although I had them, I wasn’t able to apply any Suite Night Awards at the St Regis Maldives, since all rooms are considered Suites. While I understand their policy, it would have been nice to try and get a further confirmed upgrade with your elite status.
Getting to the St Regis Maldives:
We arrived into the Maldives via Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class San Francisco – Doha and Qatar Airways Business Class Doha – Malé. We stayed at the W Maldives for a five day stay, prior to transferring over to the St Regis Maldives.
After arriving at Malé Noovuli Sea Plane Terminal, our bags were transferred and we were checked into Trans Maldivian Airways. We were introduced to the dedicated St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort Lounge at the Malé Noovuli Seaplane Terminal, and boarded a Trans Maldivian Flight. If you want to see more about this part of the journey, I encourage you to read that separate review.
The check in activities for St Regis Maldives occurred within the St Regis Lounge at the Malé Noovuli Sea Plane terminal. Our Marriott Bonvoy Elite level was Platinum for this particular stay, which entitles a guest to the best available room at check in, including Select Suites.
While we’ve seen reports of travellers being upgraded to an ocean facing over water villa, we didn’t get any further upgrade on this visit. Not withstanding the lack of upgrade, we were fairly happy with the assigned and booked Overwater Villa with Pool, 1 Bedroom Villa. The only disadvantage was that this particular Overwater villa overlooked the main island and their buildings, which didn’t completely bring that serene and isolated Maldives experience. Whether you are bothered by seeing other structures during your Maldivian holiday will help your process whether the upgrade to the horizon skylines are worth it.

We were staying as Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Level Elite members during our stay. We also confirmed selecting Breakfast as a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Welcome Gift, which would entitle us to a full breakfast buffet at Alba Restaurant on a complimentary basis.
The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort is located in the Dhaalu Atoll in a south south westerly location from the airport city of Malé.
It was about forty five minutes flight away from the Malé Noovuli Sea Plane Terminal, making it a mostly convenient daytime hop from any international flight. The resort runs on “resort” time to take advantage of the local seasonal weather patterns, meaning that the clocks go back one hour from Malé time, when it comes to resort operations.
Checking into the St Regis Maldives:
On arrival to the St Regis Maldives, we deplaned at the sea plane arrival jetty. We were introduced to our butler and were provided a refreshing coconut. We also had a few welcome photographs, which was a nice personal touch.
We were among the last off the arrival jetty. This was perhaps well played on the part of the resort as our room was just coming ready after housekeeping service. We were loaded into a golf cart and given a brief tour of the island.
The Room: Overwater Villa with Pool, 1 Bedroom Villa, 1 King, Sofa Bed
I had requested a villa as far out on the pontoon as possible. This request was honoured. We were positioned about eleven villas out on the pontoon out of about sixteen in length.
Our butler drove us out to the overwater villa pontoons. We were led to our assigned Overwater Villa #511. The St Regis Maldives overwater villas have a modern wooden monolithic look to them. I don’t find them particularly attractive as far as over water villas go.

Each villa is stocked with a personal men and woman’s bicycle marked with the villa number. This was a nice touch and we actually used the bikes a few times while I was on the property.

The Overwater Villa with Pool, 1 Bedroom Villa, 1 King, Sofa Bed is a large 182 sqm / 1958 sq feet newly constructed over water villa. With the resort opening in November 2016, the build is new. The villa features every modern amenity. These included automated blinds and integrated room control through a bedside iPad.
Immediately upon entering into the room, you’ll find yourself in a small foyer containing a desk area and mini bar.

A few more steps will take you into the bedroom and living room area. It’s an immediately spectacular view overlooking green lagoon waters through giant oversized windows.

The living room and the bedroom form one giant oversized space. Ultra high ceilings makes the environment bright, spacious and airy.

The King Size Bed was wonderfully comfortable. It featured high quality linen sheets, comfortable pillows and a mattress that was even marked underneath as Starwood Preferred Guest. We had no complaints with the bedding or the bed comfort and the quality of the products and sleepwear were exceptional.

We certainly didn’t have any issues waking up to a view like this every morning.
The Bathroom:
The St Regis Maldives overwater villa bathroom is located just off the bedroom. It featured a large double vanity sink, along with a lit embedded lighting system in the countertop.

For the ultimate indulgences, there was also a massive soaker tub for bathing overlooking the lagoon at the St Regis Maldives.

Being a St Regis property, the bathroom featured every possible amenity. These included environmentally friendly refillable water, hockey puck soaps, refillable face wash and other complimentary sundries.

Towards the back of the bathroom, the area space narrowed a bit and featured a large stand up rain shower, along with water closet.

The space behind the bathroom featured a large walk in closet and dressing desk area that ran the length of the room. I really appreciate St Regis for incorporating these features into their rooms. We’ve seen a similar set up at the St Regis Mauritius.
This space featured a large closet and luggage rack with ample space to hang up clothes. There were two life jackets located in the dressing room, for those that wanted to use them for snorkeling.

The dressing room also featured complimentary his and hers sun hats and St Regis Maldives flip flops. These made the perfect souvenirs. I happen to love that the St Regis Maldives provides items like this that can be taken home with you as a free hard product memory of your trip.

Room Amenities:
Back in the foyer area of the room, there was a second small desk with charging ports. The desk housed many of the schedules and features of the island.

In addition to a small drink cart of spirits available for purchase, the room featured a large number of glassware, snacks and other comforts designed to make your stay efficient and pleasant.

The room also featured a full wine fridge and mini bar for in room beverages. MrsWT73 grabbed a bottle of properly chilled Sauvignon Blanc out of the fridge before I knew what was happening.
We were provided with a complimentary bottle of Gruet NV Champagne, which was sitting on ice waiting for us on arrival. This is about a perfect a method to arrive at any property after a long journey and a great way to mark a celebratory occasion.

The Outside Deck:
The St Regis Maldives outdoor deck featured a very large and spacious deck space. It consisted of a table and chairs for two, and two comfortable day loungers with attached tables.

The view from the loungers was pretty special, and I’d enjoy a good five days of lounging out here overlooking the lagoon waters of the St Regis Maldives.

The deck space itself was large and spacious. The deck featured a relaxing net that over hung the waters of the lagoon that ran the length of the villa deck. The space would become a favourite of MrsWT73 who spent a lot of time in the net itself.

The opposite end of the deck featured a relaxing lounge chair for two. Without any sun covering, we didn’t end up using this lounger that often in the villa. I did find that with an eastern facing orientation, we’d typically loose the sun exposure on the sunrise deck by about 3 PM in the afternoon. This meant an earlier rise for sun exposure for these units.

Amazingly, there was hardly any internet wi-fi strength out on the sun deck. While you can make a point that it’s great to be off your smart phone devices, it’s almost in-excusable not to have any wi – fi connectivity outside in a villa costing $2,500 USD a night.

The overwater villa also featured a medium sized infiniti private plunge pool. This was perfect for cooling off. Dependent on the direction you were facing, you had a view of the Vommuli Island itself, other villas, or a peek a boo view to the ocean lagoon.

The view from the Over Water Villa room happened to be my least favourite part of the room itself. There is something about looking out over the endless ocean in the Maldives towards the horizon. Unfortunately, with the basic level overwater villa, you’ll likely find yourself looking into the island which contains the two bedroom buildings. It’s a nice view, but since you’re looking at other buildings and structures, it’s not and endless one.

The overwater villa also featured private lagoon access down to the waters. While the access was really convenient, there weren’t a lot of corals to be seen or experienced in this particular part of the island.

The spacing between the villas is exceptionally generous. Unlike some of the more entry level overwater villa hotels that pack over water villas really tightly together, there is quite a bit of space between each villa. You’ll be unlikely to hear your neighbours, unless you find yourselves next to some loud ones.
Overall, the St Regis Maldives Overwater Villa was an exceptionally comfortable room. The amount of space is simply over the top for an awards redemption and you’ll have a really comfortable and spacious stay. About the only thing that wasn’t perfect was the view from the villa, which was inwards towards the island. While some might not be bothered by this, or not interested in paying the price premium for this, it would mark the first time I’d stayed in the Maldives in an overwater villa without an endless water view.
Around the Hotel Property:
Getting away to the Maldives often represents being stranded on a private island in the middle of nowhere. This has always represented a serene environment with few people.
The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort Island is pretty large in terms of both amenties and size. I found the island to be almost a little too large and resort like in it’s configuration; having a preference for a smaller island resort.
Overwater Pontoons:
Walking from the overwater pontoons to the resort was an exercise in dreamy architectural landscapes.

After coming off the overwater pontoons, we had a view of the St Regis Maldives Resort Beach located immediately in front of the Alba Restaurant.

The Vommuli Island is protected by some shore stone guards. These rocky outcrops are either cleverly photo-shopped out of the resort marketing, or they’ve been added since the resort has been opened to protect from beach erosion. Either way, they are a little unsightly and unnatural, in my humble opinion.
The resort beach itself isn’t immune to these shore guards and we’d find one located immediately off the primary resort beach. The primary resort beach is located next to the popular Whale Bar, which occupies an appropriately shaped Whale building right next to the resort beach.

The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Beach:
The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort Beach offers a general resort beach for those whom aren’t enjoying the privacy of their villas. We found ourselves here on the occasional day where the sun exposure on our villa deck disappeared after 3 PM, and also on check out day when we were evicted from our villa.

The resort beach is located immediately in front of Alba Restaurant. The beach itself is a shore protected one that does not see a lot of waves. The beach is almost artificial in appearance, as it has a whole lot of packed sand shaped into a crescent.
We didn’t have any issues locating chairs at any time during our stay. The beach was attended to by very attentive staff, who removed towels, brought ice water and occasionally, small fruit snacks.

It has a gradual smooth entry into the water, where you’ll find a little bit of tropical fish. For snorkeling, you’ll have to head out quite a ways; about a ten minute swim in order to get to any type of corals. The coral formations that we saw were pretty primitive, and the resort has a lot of years before they’ll have a mature and thriving reef.
The Resort Beach is also located next to the resort pool. As a very large plunge pool, I didn’t see many people using the larger pool. During my visits, I only ended up cooling off in the resort pool for shorter periods of time.

House Reef:
The Maldives is known for it’s world class snorkeling and some excellent house reefs. We’ve had terrific experiences at the Park Hyatt Maldives and The W Maldives when it comes to world class snorkeling right from shore.

Based on advice from our butler, we set out to snorkel in between the John Jacob Astor villa and the Whale Bar. This was about a 10 minute swim from the steps of Overwater Villa #51.

Sadly, the St Regis Maldives Vommuli House Reef isn’t anywhere near the same category as these wonderful world class reefs. While you might imagine an underwater world set on top of vibrant coral formations, the St Regis House Reef is remarkably different.

St Regis Maldives Vommuli House Reef forms a number of rocks with tropical fish, but with very little coral growth or formations on top of these rocks. Given the absence of any growth, there seem to be a number of years before the reef will be anywhere near the quality of some of the other resorts.

Despite this, with some persistence, we did get to spot several unique tropical fish exclusive to the Maldives. They just happened to exist in a seemly low rent neighbourhood that was absent of all the coral extravagances found at some other resorts in the Maldives.

The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort also participates in a coral reconstruction exercise. Guests can donate towards coral trees and re-growth starting at about $300 USD up to about $1,000 USD. The St Regis Maldives will forward you a photograph of your coral trees at the 3, 6, and 12 month mark, which is a nice way to have a memory of your holiday.

Ultimately, if you’re hoping to see a beautiful underwater reef in the Maldives, this isn’t the resort to experience this. For those that are insistent on seeing some tropical fish, you’ll likely get that opportunity; albeit in a less grand setting.
The Iridium Spa:
Iridium Blue Hole Experience.
The St Regis Maldives offers an Iridium Spa similar to its other St Regis counterparts. When we mentioned we were celebrating our ten year wedding anniversary, our butler arranged for us a complimentary “Blue Hole Experience” at the Iridium Spa.
We lucked out as we received this scheduled on the one day that was not particularly sunny in the Maldives. After riding our bikes over to the Iridium Spa, we checked in at reception. We were escorted into the back toward the Blue Hole.

The Iridium Spa offers six treatment rooms that are located in separate buildings over the water. With the water theme of the Maldives, the Iridium Spa makes the most of the ocean’s environment.

The Iridium Blue Hole Experience is marketed as “Unwind in our Blue Hole hydrotherapy pool, with a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean, that incorporates
gentle and more powerful jets of water massages. This delivers exceptional therapeutic properties for the body with cleansing of the skin. The warm salt water helps relieve pain and induces muscle relaxation. It also increases buoyancy which in turn gives a greater range of movement.“
We were led in to the Iridium Spa and invited into the Blue Hole. It’s a massive over water pool with an almost endless view of the Indian Ocean.

The tub has an odd shape with some underwater seating arrangements partially hidden under the water. After they fired up the jets, we had the tub to ourselves.

The Blue Hole was an interesting add on to the holiday. While it’s regularly marketed at $75 USD for a shared experience, or $180 USD for a private experience at 45 minuets, it’s more like something to do after a spa appointment. It was nice to get a few photographs, but it wasn’t some thing that I would absolutely feel the need to do on my next visit.
Food and Beverage:
The kinds of restaurants that are accessible when visiting a private island are an important part of any longer stay. Being on a private island, you can’t scoot off to another island to locate another restaurant. Fortunately, there are enough eating options at The St Regis Maldives to satisfy you for any length of stay.
The St Regis Maldives offers a wide variety of international restaurants and features. In offering something for it’s well heeled international clientele, it almost offers too many options. With five separate restaurants spread around the island, the property felt more like a larger resort than any other private island property that I’ve previously visited in the Maldives. With the larger format, I though that the resort lost a little bit any intimate charm that normally goes along with the private island experience.
Discount Marriott Bonvoy Food and Beverage Promotions:
On the date of check in, we were offered the resort’s promotional program that offers the equivalent of a 15% discount on all food and beverage. The St Regis Maldives offered the opportunity to purchase $350 USD of food for $300 USD a day; a 15% discount.

The St Regis Maldives required you to purchase the pre-paid program for every day of your stay. Once we agreed to complete the purchase (on the day of arrival at about 6 PM), our credit card was immediately processed for the amount outside of the deposits taken for our regular stay.
While the terms didn’t specifically state as such, the value of the credit was applied to the total food and beverage amount at the end of the stay. This meant that if you spent $400 one evening, you could spend $300 the next and still be within budget; as opposed to spending a flat $350 each night.
In terms of trying to decide whether to take the resort up on the promotion, I generally found that the on food property was “hyper expensive”. With all meals being subject to 10% service charge and 16% Maldives tax, we churned through the resort credit really quickly. This was simply on ordering a daily sunset drink each at Whale Bar, a single entrée each at dinner, and a cheap bottle of wine. With breakfast included on a complimentary basis under the Marriott Bonvoy program, it would be a no-brainer to take advantage of the promotion if you didn’t have any form of status. With the promotion, we were able to enjoy ourselves without worrying as much about costs. We certainly didn’t have any regrets participating in the promotion.
Reservation Reservations:
The food and beverage options at the St Regis Maldives are typically booked through your St Regis Maldives butler. Without booking several days in advance, it was a little challenging getting an early dining time before 8 PM. There were several days where we were dining at 8:30 PM when we couldn’t get seated earlier.
Even more challenging is that all restaurants are not open on every night. All to say, I encourage early planning where possible along with early bookings. Planning a free style dining experience like we did often resulted in late dining.
With that background, let’s get onto what restaurants are available.
Alba Restaurant:
Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Breakfast
The St Regis Maldives serves both breakfast and dinner at the Alba Restaurant. During our visit, breakfast was served between 7:00 AM and 10:30 AM. Since the resort runs on “island time”, breakfast ending at 10:30 AM actually translated into last call for breakfast at 9:30 AM. This was a bit earlier than I would have liked.
For those with Marriott Bonvoy Platinum or higher elite status, you’ll have complimentary access to quite possibly one of the best buffet breakfast offerings out there (if you selected the breakfast benefit). It even surpassed the Westin Regina Europa Venice Breakfast, which was our past worldwide favourite.

The seating is a combination of outdoors on the sand, inside a covered and fanned area, or wholly inside for air conditioned comfort.

Most days, we ended up in the covered fanned area, which was the right balance of heat versus cool air.

In terms of the breakfast buffet, we were invited to order egg dishes, coffee and champagne off our server. We were then given free access to the buffet, which was valued at $65 USD++ ($81.90 USD service charge and taxes in) per person.

There is free flow prosecco and Bloody Mary’s available at the bar. The prosecco can be enjoyed on it’s own, or as a mimosa with orange juice.

The breakfast buffet offered absolutely every kind of food on offer. Between western hot items, to Indian cooking, to fresh pastries, to freshly cut fruit, to European meats and cheeses, to Asian dumplings and dim sum steamers, to Buerre D’Isigny Demi Sel Butter flown in from France, there was something for everyone and every taste.
Despite the excellent buffet, we also enjoyed some terrific a – la – carte breakfast items.
One of my favourite breakfasts was the Maldivian Style Eggs Benedict, served with English Muffin, Two Egg Poached, Maldivian Yellowfin, Tuna, Soft Shell Crab Tempura, Curry Infused, Coconut-Hollandaise Sauce. I couldn’t get enough of this soft shell crab tempura. It was tasty with a great regional Maldivian crisp taste and something special to look forward to everyday.

In other over the top items, i also enjoyed a Maldivian Lobster and Crab Omelette, served with Butternut Pumpkin Pure, Avruga Caviar, Fennel Cress.

Over the course of several breakfasts, I also enjoyed Avocado on Toast. The St Regis Maldives version of this included a Poached egg, Slice Avocado, Sun Dried Tomato & Feta Cheese, and Toasted Pumpkin Seeds. It was great to experience an upscale dish that was a break from the usual hotel breakfast fare.

I also enjoyed the star of the breakfast menu; the Waffle and Duck Leg Confit served wth One Fried Egg, Golden Mustard, Maple Syrup, and Fresh Strawberry. This was an excellent dish but unfortunately it wasn’t on the menu every day. Make sure you order it when you get the chance; it may not be around everyday of your stay.

The breakfast at Alba was among my favourite parts of the food and beverage program at the hotel. We enjoyed great breakfasts at the property and would look forward to leisurely breakfasts in great surroundings.
During our stay, we also dined at Alba Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant transforms into a glamorous Italian Fine Dining establishment.

I enjoyed lobster pasta. MrsWT73 enjoyed a corn risotto with burrata cheese. Despite the vibrant colours, the corn and truffle oil flavouring was over the top. This happened to be the least favourite meal of the trip for MrsWT73..

While I enjoyed the dinner at Alba Restaurant, the breakfast was really the star of the visit. The setting, food quality and service were excellent.
Orientale:
Given the upscale brand of the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, it would make sense that the resort has a proper Asian restaurant. Orientale was open during our visit between 7:00 PM – 10:30 PM.
The Orientale restaurant is described as “redefines Eastern haute cuisine, boasting a sushi bar and a selection of seasonal pan-Asian dishes.” With that description, it gets it mostly right with a combination of Asian cuisines from across the Pacific Rim.

The restaurant setting is in an open air restaurant with some select views towards the ocean. Like many others on the island, the restaurant has an urban and contemporary feel to it.

During our visit, I went old school and enjoyed a Hainanese Chicken Rice (Half portion – $70 USD++) which was presented as Hainanese Style Steamed Half Chicken in Superior Soya Sauce, Served with Ginger Paste and Chicken Lard Rice.

The Hainan Chicken Rice was delicious and enjoyable. It was served with chili oil and black ginger sauces. It was well paired with a German Riesling white wine.
While a popular restaurant for many of the Asian St Regis Maldives visitors, we’d only end up visiting once during our trip.
Cargo:
Another restaurant offering was the middle eastern themed Cargo Restaurant. Cargo was described as a “restaurant pops up each night for dinner amidst our tropical gardens and offers an alternative to beachfront dining“. Cargo was open between 7:00 PM to 10:30 PM on select evenings.
We had some challenges getting a seat at Cargo restaurant. This was a a result of it only being open on good weather evenings, and that they only had a limited number of tables available.
Cargo is located in the middle of the island in a forested enclave that is found walking down a deserted path. Once you get to the restaurant, you’ll find yourself in a clearing with about ten tables in an intimate forest environment.

Dining at Cargo offers a sandy bottomed dining environment. Unlike all the other restaurants on the island, Cargo was the only one that was located off the water. As a result, it had the tendency to be extremely hot in the jungle forest environment dining in humid 29 degree weather at 8:30 PM. While I don’t usually indulge in over the top expenses, the heat was so warm that I even downed a $14 USD ++ Bottle of Voss water at dinner without a second thought.
During my visit, i enjoyed a Riyash Laham ($80 USD ++), which was a Lamb Chop, Cumin, Coriander, Paprika, Onion, Tomato, Sumac, Garlic, Yoghurt, Dijon Mustard. It was exceptionally tasty with an upscale flavour profile. It was probably among the best lamb dishes I’ve had in my life.

I enjoyed Cargo Restaurant. The food was exquisite but the hot temperatures made the dining experience a warm one. The cheque at Cargo came to $273 USD with two entrées, a bottle of water and a bottle of wine.
Whale Bar:
The flagship bar at the St Regis Maldives is the showy Whale Bar. Visiting the Whale Bar became a comfortable sunset cocktail tradition to “…soak in panoramic views as the sun sets over a majestic coral reef”. The Whale Bar was open between 6:00 PM – 12:00 AM.

The Whale Bar was an absolutely spectacular setting with an open air setting on pontoons over the water.

The Whale Bar also offered dining service after 7:30 PM, with tables and chairs set up near the bar. There were also cocktail loungers on the pontoons for sunset viewing.

The Whale Bar was also the home of the champagne sabrage event. This was a display of the St Regis saberage of champagne. While we’ve had the opportunity to go “hands on” at some St Regis resorts, this version of sabarage was strictly a display version accompanied by the butlers of the property.

Despite it not being a hands on saberage, the views couldn’t be more spectacular. We had the opportunity to see some dolphins from the Whale Bar, in addition to several wonderful days of sunsets.

For a particularly adult evening, we did enjoy dinner twice at the Whale Bar. One evening, I enjoyed a grilled steak with charred vegetables.

MrsWT73 enjoyed a crisp green salad; something that is pretty rare in the Maldives given the lack of produce. It was given exceptionally high marks.

Another evening, I enjoyed the catch of the day; jackfish with similar charred vegetables. The fish was cooked a little more than I would have liked it; a little less juicy than in my Pacific Northwest home in North America.

Finishing off my credit, I even indulged in house made vanilla ice cream in the Maldives. It was special treat enjoyed outside in temperatures in the high twenties.

The Whale Bar was probably our favourite food and beverage outlet on the whole island. The combination of the nice setting, and the adult environment of the dining experience against the sound of the lapping waves made this location an easy favourite.
Checking Out of the St Regis Maldives:
Our departure plans had us departing very late from the Malé International Airport on Qatar Airways Q Suites Malé – Doha, staying overnight at the Westin Doha Hotel and Spa – Qatar, and then travelling onwards on Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Doha – San Francisco.
I had requested a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium late check out. While most city hotels will easily accomodate up to 4 PM, the latest that we could get was a 12 PM check out.
We ended up on the St Regis Maldives Resort beach for the balance of the day. Our departing flight left the island at 3 PM. We were collected by our butler by golf cart and taken to the departure lounge at 2:20 PM. The St Regis Maldives offers a purpose built departure facility complete with showers, relaxing zones and the only fully complimentary food on the island.

The free food consisted of sandwiches, finger foods and enough to keep you covered for your short flight back to Malé.

We were eventually collected by our butler and taken to the departure dock. Our Trans Maldivian Airways Vommuli – Malé flight was waiting for us. As always, it’s difficult to leave the luxury resorts of the Maldives. However, our onwards journey awaited.

With a final look at the St Regis Maldvies Vommuli Resort sign, we headed off from the best Marriott Bonvoy point redemption ever. After our Trans Maldivian Airways flight from Vommuli – Malé, we were returned to the St Regis Maldives Lounge Malé for fifty minutes prior to being transferred over to the Malé International Airport for check in to our international departure flight.
Bottom Line: The St Regis Maldives
The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort was almost everything you could ask for in a luxury resort.
The Over Water Villas are among the best redemptions available in the Marriott Bonvoy network today. The Over Water Villas are large, luxurious and have every possible amenity. In this case, you get terrific value for your point redemptions. The Marriott Bonvoy Elite Breakfast at Alba Restaurant is excellent value. We really enjoyed the Whale Bar sundowner cocktails, and the food and beverage quality was excellent at almost every meal we enjoyed.
On the down side, the resort was a bit large for my tastes, and didn’t feel like your usual small format private island Maldivian holiday given it’s sprawling feel to the place. The food and beverage options were hyper expensive, which lessened the free wheeling nature of the resort. Lastly, the coral gardens at the resorts house reef was practically non existent. If you’re looking for great snorkeling, it won’t be here.
Despite this, it was an unusually fun stay in the Maldives. I enjoyed the chance to check out this property and will probably be back again someday; assuming the price is right.
If you have stayed at the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, did it live up to your expectations ?

Review: Trans Maldivian Airways De Havilland Twin Otter, Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal – St Regis Vommuli
Earlier in the trip, we enjoyed a five day stay at The W Maldives. For the second part of our trip, it was time to head onto the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort. Our travels to the St Regis Maldives was our most anticipated luxury travel experience for this particular trip.
Checking into Trans Maldivian Airways:
We arrived into the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal on a Trans Maldivian Airways flight from the W Maldives. I wasn’t given any instructions on where we would meet our representative from the St Regis Maldives.

After arriving on our inbound sea plane flight, we met our St Regis Maldives Vommuli representative in the arrivals area of the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane terminal. We were walked over to the Trans Maldivian Airways check in area within the Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal and checked in.

Our checked and cabin bags were weighed. Unlike our experience checking into the W Maldives, we had no overage charges.
After completing the check in process, we were led upstairs to the St Regis Maldives Vommuli lounge, which was located on the top floor of the Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal building. Since this was an event in itself, I’ve elected to cover the St Regis Maldives Malé Lounge in a separate post.

We’d enjoy a comfortable experience in the St Regis Lounge prior to our departing flight to the resort.
Boarding Trans Maldivian Airways:
When it came time to depart, we were led down to the sea plane pontoons. There were two other couples travelling with us in the lounge, but we did end up with a full plane headed to Vommuli. We were joined by a large group of about six Asian travellers boarding the sea plane flight with us.

It’s always a bit of a scramble to get onto the sea planes since everyone usually wants the best seats. I usually try to hang out on the below walkway towards the railing so I don’t get left behind or stuck in last place.

The seating configuration on the Trans Maldivian Airlines Twin Otter is in a 1 – 2 configuration. I ended up seated on the right hand side of the plane in the second row.

In hindsight, the best views on this route are on the left hand side of the aircraft. As a result, if you want the best pictures of Maldivian coral atolls on this particular route, I recommend you sit on the left hand side when headed down to Vommuli.

Flying a Sea Plane over the Maldives:
We had a forty five minute flight down to Vommuli from Malé. Departing from the Malé Noovilu Sea Plane terminal, we were airborne within minutes.
We headed off on a South Westernly track towards Vommuli and were immediately treated to some views of beautiful Maldivian Atolls.

It wasn’t long before we were treated to views of some luxury resorts. The lower elevation of the sea planes allowed for great photographs and views from the wing.

We also saw some of the industrial areas outside of the capital city of Malé, using mostly reclaimed land. We also flew over islands that blended urban islands among the exotic islands in the Republic of the Maldives.

After we got out of the urban islands surrounding Malé, it was nothing but the beautiful blue atolls slipping by under the aircraft.

We had a wonderfully sunny day, with a lot of contrasting blues, greens and dark browns among the corals. The colours of the atolls were among the most vibrant I’ve had the opportunity to see, and that includes past flying on the United Island Hopper through some of the most remote Pacific Atolls in the Pacific Ocean.

We eventually started a descent into Vommuli. We had a circle around the island, landing at the arrival jetty.

We disembarked our short Trans Maldivian Airways flight and enjoyed a great six day stay at the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort.
My Thoughts on Trans Maldivian Airways:
Our journey on Trans Maldivian Airways from Malé to Vommuli marked a much more scenic and picturesque flight when compared to our flight from Malé to the W Maldives.
We were treated to at the viewing of a number of compelling atolls and scenic blue skies. Make sure you sit on the left hand side of the aircraft on your way down for the very best views.
If you’ve flown Trans Maldivian Airways, did you enjoy the experience of atoll spotting on your journey ?

Review: The St Regis Maldives Lounge, Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal, Maldives
Earlier in the trip, we enjoyed a five day stay at The W Maldives. For the second part of our trip, it was time to head onto the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort. Our travels to the St Regis Maldives was our most anticipated luxury travel experience for this particular trip.
Checking into the St Regis Maldives:

We were led inside an intimate and private lounge that was miles quieter than the nearby Trans Maldivian Airways Coral Lounge. We were escorted through the lounge reception directly to a choice of seating.

The St Regis Maldives Vommuli departures lounge in Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal was decorated in upscale greys accented by coral blues. The lounge was designed to seat about twenty people in both lounge seating and work spaces.

We ended up in the centre most portion of the lounge. Despite being in the centre, there was minimal lounge traffic as all were generally arriving or departing on the same seaplane flights.

There was also a small outdoor patio area with a view over the sea planes pontoons at the terminal. Given that we were in the lounge in the middle of the day, many of the sea planes were out flying making the docks a little less crowded than when we visited after arriving off an international flight early in the morning.

It is always a great view from this facility. St Regis Maldives likely paid for a premium to have a proper sea plane view from their lounge. We enjoyed a spectacular view of the sea planes while we waited for our departing flight.

The lounge also offered the opportunity to use private showers. While this was great to have access to, it wasn’t something that immediately came to mind when arriving or departing.
Once we had settled inside the lounge, we were presented with an iPad menu of drinks and light snacks. Both the drinks and snacks were presented on a complimentary basis. Like all other airline lounges in the Maldives, the menu was “dry” and alcohol was not offered or served.

I ended up ordering an Evian water. I felt a little bit guilty ordering it given the carbon cost that it must have had had flying all that way from France.
We started our check in process and room registration in the lounge. Unfortunately, the lounge attendants had a small issue with the credit card payment machine and they were not able to complete it in the time allotted.
While this was occurring, we watched a personal video from our assigned butler. The St Regis Maldives offers butler services to all guests. The video included an personal address by name, spouses’ name and Marriott Elite level status. It was a unique touch and a nice introductory way to set the mood.

Although we were initially told that we were going to be on a 12:30 AM flight, we ended up getting moved to an earlier flight with a departure time of 11:40 AM. This meant that we only spent about 30 minutes in the lounge. This wasn’t a bad thing, as it would mean we’d get to spend more time on the resort, rather than waiting in a sea plane terminal building in Malé.
We departed on a Trans Maldivian Airways Malé – Vommuli flight for a great six day stay at the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort.
Returning to the St Regis Maldives Lounge Malé:
On our returning flight on Trans Maldivian Airways Vommuli – Malé, we were transported up to the St Regis Maldives Malé Lounge, prior to departing the Maldives.
We had approximately four hours prior to our international departure from the Maldives on Qatar Airways Q Suites Business Class Malé – Doha. The St Regis Maldives took great care of us, and provided us time and access to the St Regis Maldives Malé lounge until we were ready to head over to the Malé Velana International Airport for our departing international flight.
During our returning stay, we were presented with evening menus for snacking. Instead of bakery items, there were more substantial snacks on the menu that included beef burgers, pizza slices and chicken quiches.

There were also a large amount of non alcoholic beverages available for consumption. All items were made available on a complimentary basis.

Since you never turn down a free meal in the Maldives, I ended up ordering a beef burger and a desalianted Coca Cola. There Maldives remains one of the few places in the world that creates Coca Coca from sea water and uses desalination in order to remove the sea salt from the beverage. Make sure you check out the sea water listed on the ingredients on the can if you find yourself in the Maldives.

The beef burger was a little messy on the hands, but it was pretty good for a beef burger. MrsWT73 enjoyed a slice of pizza. However, it was very much of the frozen variety and not all that exciting.
We would later transfer to our departing flight of the Qatar Airways Q Suites Malé – Doha, courtesy of the St Regis Maldives team.
My Thoughts on the St Regis Maldvies Lounge Malé:
The St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort recognizes the value in having a private dedicated lounge for his distinguished guests.
The St Regis Maldives Lounge Malé offers every amenity possible designed for guests comfort while travelling to and from the resort. In addition to nice surroundings, the lounge offers a nice sea plane view and the opportunity for some free snacks and nibbles.
If you’ve visited the St Regis Maldives Lounge Malé, did it enhance your travel experience ?

Review: Trans Maldivian Airways De Havilland Twin Otter, W Maldives – Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal
We enjoyed a five day stay at The W Maldives. Today’s departing flight from The W Maldives had us returning to Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal. We would then connect onwards to another Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane flight from Malé to the St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort.
Checking into Trans Maldivian Airways:
The W Maldives Resort handled all the check in procedures for this flight. We didn’t get a boarding card or other boarding document. Our bags were transferred from the room directly to the arrival and departure jetty.

Our bags were put out at 9:45 AM to be ready for a 10:15 AM departure on the sea plane. The Trans Maldivian Airways Twin Otter arrived on time and parked at the arrival pontoon.

The Safety Briefing:
Boarding Trans Maldivian Airways:
When it came time to board, we boarded the De Havilland Twin Otter. Seating on Trans Maldivian Airways (and almost every other floatplane that I know of) is in a single class of service in a 1 – 2 configuration.

There isn’t a lot of ventilation within the cabin. The climate control consisted of a single spinning fan with cautionary tales of not getting your hair stuck in the spinning fan blades.

For aviation fans, it’s easy to get a look into the Twin Otter Cockpit. There isn’t typically a door and you can peer inside to see the cockpit itself.

Flying a Sea Plane over the Maldives:
The return journey from the W Maldives to Malé offered equally as enticing and picturesque views over the Maldives.
We had our last views of The W Maldives as we departed and climbed to altitude from the North Ari Atoll.

We started off on a track in a North East East direction. Almost instantly, we were treated to views of the colours of the atolls of the Maldives.

We would also enjoy a look at the luxurious resorts along the way, marked by wonderful over water villas.

The sights of the atolls of the Maldives are truly special. There isn’t anywhere in the world that has colourful atolls so easily viewed from the air such as this.

We descended into Malé as the atolls got closer and closer to the cabin. The idea of being able to visit these isolated atolls by boat is truly unique to this world.

We descended into Malé Noovilu Sea Plane Terminal, with even closer views of the the shores and islands of the Maldives as we descended. Seated in the second row, we had a peek – a – boo view into the cockpit as we descended into Malé.

We had a smooth touch down on the water on the shores of Malé, and had a short taxi into the Noovilu Sea Plane terminal. It’s always a picturesque landing surrounded by Twin Otter Sea Planes bobbing in the water.

We disemarked our short Trans Maldivian Airways flight. We would transfer onwards to a second Trans Maldivian Airways Malé – St Regis Maldives Vommuli flight.
My Thoughts on Trans Maldivian Airways:
It’s always a special experience to fly on a propeller plane and it’s even more special doing so over the Maldives.
On your route, you’ll get the opportunity to view gorgeous coral atolls. In terms of travelling, what could be more wonderful than that ?
