The Caribbean country of Cuba has always been an interesting travel proposition. As one of the few countries in the world still to identify as communist, it’s always been on my list as a travel destination that I had yet to realize. After being able to tag onto a girls’ trip, I was able to accompany MrsWT73 and her friends for a week of exploring Cuba. Trip Introduction: Havana and Varadero, Cuba… Read More
One of the lessor known countries in Europe is the island nation of Malta. We stumbled open a deeply discounted Air France Business Class airfare from Canada to Germany and booked it with the intention fo a little exploration around Europe. We would end up travelling to Germany, and onwards to Malta, following up with a wonderful stay in Venice, Italy and a spin through Oktoberfest Germany. Trip Introduction: Malta and Gozo,… Read More
As an avid downhill skier, the pandemic health conditions were not at all favourable to downhill skiing. The activity of downhill skiing of being outside in the outdoors, away from all other people was deemed to be safe, whereas the crowded employee housing and other après ski venues were not. We had a patchy ski season in the winter of 2020 – 2021, with reservations needed at almost all ski areas throughout… Read More
In my experience, the African Continent reward travels are among the hardest award redemptions to pull off. Thanks to a remote location, limited capacity in premium cabins, high demand, and by failing to strategize by keeping too many of one points currency can limit your ability to get into the front cabin for one of the farthest destinations on earth. Thanks to diversification, we were able to put together a trip using… Read More
Like our last trip, this particular voyage was about maximizing offers and redemptions to put together a reasonably priced holiday filled with value. We used Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan to redeem against upgrades in to First Class, a 3 for 2 hotel stay with a premium Fairmont hotel, and paid for a First Class fare between the Hawaiian Islands in order to take advantage of paid baggage fees. We ended up with… Read More
Around this time, I started to get a bit more creative with the frequent flier redemptions. Instead of just collecting the points, I started with the “buy low / sell high” method of purchasing points to redeem against outsized value. In this trip, I maximized point redemption values to put together a fantastic family trip for a lot less than expected. Trip Introduction: Dodging Volcanic Ash. Bali and Singapore via Delta, Asiana,… Read More
With another year, another frequent flier point de-valuation came and went. Thankfully, Aeroplan had the courtesy to announce the changes with several months in advance, unlike some other recent frequent flier program devaluations. It seemed like the logical time to burn more miles. I’ve pretty much given up on maintaining status after 8 years, since the miles are easier to obtain through other forms of accumulation. Trip Introduction: Vietnam, Maldives and India…. Read More
Trip Introduction: Hitching a Ride to Sydney & Adelaide, Australia via Air Canada, United and Qantas Business Class. Background: This story starts two years ago on a sunny summer day at a winery in the Okanagan area of British Columbia. After an exotic international courtship, Ms WT73 had decided to accept my hand in marriage set amongst the beautiful vines and August heat of Nk’Mip wineries. Meeting later in life, our careers,… Read More
The City of Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America is always an interesting attraction for those of us on the West Coast of North America. It’s situated relatively close to most major cities, with great air connections in and out of the city, and is perfect for a short adult getaway. Trip Introduction: Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and the Aria Sky Suites via Alaska Airlines First Class Trip Planning: MrsWT73… Read More
There are times when family duties call. You don’t ever get to chose where family lives but you can chose how to get there. In this adventure, we made the best of it by flying commercially and got ourselves upgraded to Air Canada Business Class. Trip Introduction: Kenora Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada via Air Canada Business Class Trip Planning: MrsWT73 is from “all over”, but her good cousin lives in… Read More

Trip Introduction: South Africa, Kenya and Mauritius via South African Airways, Swiss Air, United Airlines and Air Canada Business Class. Trip Planning: Time for another great trip – this one taking us from North America to South Africa. I had last been to South Africa in 1998 at the end of Apartheid but the opportunity hadn’t presented itself until now to go again. In addition, it was also timed with a slightly… Read More
